Yes,I know,I'm a bit late Grin but just started catching up on Netflix.
Have been told by lots if people that I'll love it,watched episode 4 last night & Its not grabbed me.Also annoyed by the over use of that awful term 'retard'.My daughter has CP,but that's another thing altogetherHmm
I love stuff like Homeland,True Blood,Criminal Minds,The Walking Dead but am struggling with this one??

We are same as you, but with The Wire, we are persevering, we are putting in wire time to hope it gets better.

Def give BB a go, its funny, interesting concepts with the cancer thing...the guy is an everyman who falls into strange stuff...it does change and twist quite a bit, I used to find the wife character really really annoying...I adore Hank, brilliant...to stick with it!

RainYourRottingMyDhaliaBulbs · 05/02/2014 09:59

It does get less bleak.

mollypup · 05/02/2014 10:06

Oh my goodness, yabVu! One of the absolute best things I have seen in a long time! Stick with it!

Tulip26 · 05/02/2014 10:06

YABVU. Breaking Bad is brilliant. The descent into madness that happens in series three is amazing.

CookieMonstersCousin · 05/02/2014 10:46

Its interesting which shows grab some people and not do anything for others...i love BB (half way through season 5) but couldnt get into the wire or dexter.
i loved the first 2 series of homeland but couldnt get into series 3!

CookieMonstersCousin · 05/02/2014 10:47

Oh sorry forgot to add i think you should keep going with bb but then i am biased!!

apachepony · 05/02/2014 10:51

Just finished season 2 and I love it. I did really like it from the start though, which surprised me as everyone said the first few episodes were not great...it's black but I like that. Love jesse too!

RandyRudolf · 05/02/2014 10:58

So many people have built it up for me that I really hope I'm not going to be disappointed. The same happened with Dexter. Took me a while to get into it but when I did I was obsessed. I've been told BB is better than Dexter!

TulipOHare · 05/02/2014 11:00

Going to be fair and say YANBU, as a pp said, not everything is for everyone.

But.

I cannot understand people who don't like BB, it is brilliant Grin. I don't find it bleak at all, in fact it is very very funny, although the humour is pitch-black, of course.

I found all the main characters quite relatable...have never understood why people hate Skyler. Can sort of see hating Walt because of course he is terrible and does some truly awful things for selfish reasons, but even there, I didn't hate him, was just totally gripped by the psychology of the character and the moral descent.

One of the best programmes ever made IMO!

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 05/02/2014 11:00

It is bleak, and quickly ditches the humour (that is still around at the beginning of season 1).

It made us feel depressed and we did not like the characters.

Also wanted to avoid having to watch a child on a bicycle getting shot (heard that happens later on.)

Not my thing. Self indulgent and grim.

LizLemongrass · 05/02/2014 11:02

well, I loved it. Only the last three episodes of series five.

I think you would get in to it, as the first series is a bit of a slow burn.

chickensaresafehere · 05/02/2014 11:03

I love 'Dexter' ,now that gripped me especially Season 3,loved the Jimmy Smits character, but then again I loved him in NYPD Blue too Grin

I ploughed through all 5 series and still didn't 'get' it. As others have said, it's just so bleak. They seemed to drag it out to the point where they devoted one episode to Walter & Jessie chasing a fly (I know it was symbolic but really?) It was well written and acted but I didn't enjoy it at all. Now, House of Cards, THAT's a great programme and I can't wait for season 2.

JoinYourPlayfellows · 05/02/2014 11:07

I don't agree that the writing is excellent.

It's incredibly heavy-handed at times - *Look everybody - JESSE didn't squash the bug, but SKINNY PETE, he squashed the bug. JESSE is kind to vulnerable creature."

Hmm yeah, get we get the fucking message.

Also, all the female characters are horribly annoying and badly drawn and not credible. Skyler - I ask you?

I'm still watching (Series 3) and it does get a lot better when some really brilliant characters get involved.

But the women are ALL terrible.

Lazysuzanne · 05/02/2014 11:10

Overall I liked it although bits of it strained my ability to suspend disbelief, all the bickering between Walt and Jesse annoyed me a little.

Lazysuzanne · 05/02/2014 11:13

Oh yeah, the men got all the action, the female characters were disappointing, and clichéd, I quite liked Lydia

JoinYourPlayfellows · 05/02/2014 11:14

I haven't "met" Lydia yet.

I look forward to it.

Lazysuzanne · 05/02/2014 11:15

I was really into Dexter for a while, then it started to annoy me

Helpyourself · 05/02/2014 11:18

I loved it, but...
It's not compulsory, you know. You don't have to watch anything.
Confused that an elective leisure activity could
Be the source of such angst.

Topaz25 · 05/02/2014 11:21

The last episode of Dexter really annoyed me!

Lazysuzanne · 05/02/2014 11:22

Mostly I think the women were token characters and the real story was with the men, although I guess their roles were also clichéd...inhuman amounts of 'swashbuckling' and machismo for example.

They get all the glory and kudos though and that pisses me off

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 05/02/2014 11:22

It took me until halfway through season 1 to really get into it. I couldn't stand Walter up 'til that point. He just annoyed me. We've just started season 4 now and I am HOOKED. The characters develop so well - I can't decide who I'm rooting for most!

Crowler · 05/02/2014 11:23

YABVVVVVVU.

Don't give up, it gets better & better.

chickensaresafehere · 05/02/2014 11:25

No, I realise its not compulsory, its just I thought I was going a bit funny in my old age and wondered what everyone elses take on it was & if it was worth sticking with.
I have enough angst in my life without a tv series causing more GrinGrin

Hully started a thread about this a while ago.

It looked good value, but I didn't read too much because I was still watching and didn't want any spoilers.
