To be completely aghast at OH's roast dinner habit?!

We've been together 11 months in total but managed to avoid this til tonight (possibly because it is the first time I've actually cooked him a roast). While I was dishing up, he mentioned putting pickled onions on his dinner. Obviously, I thought he was joking so continued to serve up while he poured drinks. He then produces a jar of pickled onions from the cupboard and puts them on his dinner!!

SEVEN PICKLED ONIONS ON A ROAST PORK DINNER!!!

AIBU to consider this a deal breaker and get my online dating profile up and running?

Mint sauce gives me the gips, really can't stand the stuff. Not keen on pickled onions either in all honesty but see no harm in serving them with a roast!
However my 'D'H's dinner habit will land him under the patio at some point, every single time we have roast anything at all he gets some bread and makes a bloody sandwich out of it. It drives me mad, I have no idea why, it just does!

SomethingkindaOod · 03/02/2014 14:52

On one memorable occasion though I did horrify DH and MIL when the shop had run out of apple sauce. I was too lazy to make some so I bought a jar of puréed apple baby food and served it up as apple sauce Grin.

falulahthecat · 03/02/2014 15:14

TheNightIsDark "It's for fucking lamb" < BAHAHAHA

Iamavapernow · 03/02/2014 15:16

I can see how (with beef) the pickled onion could work, it's kinda the lazy version of what I have with roast beef.

Large onion, thinly sliced and soaked in malt vinegar and sugar while the roast is in the oven.

mrsjay · 03/02/2014 15:19

I like pickled beetroot with a roast chicken dinner and pickled onions are amazing with roast gammon

falulahthecat · 03/02/2014 15:20

starfishmummy my dp did the same - Tabasco on everything - including the chicken he cooked in the GeorgeForeman that had never been cleaned (I broke it by cleaning it - the thick layer of what dp called 'flavour' I scraped off took the non-stick with it) and liberally on a 'meal' of 6 eggs, whisked (I use the term loosely) and microwaved for TEN FUCKING MINUTES. When we'd been together a couple of months I finally snapped, threw the little grey blob of egg on the floor and was just like "You make them properly or not at all!!" He's now much better at eggs than me. Grin

Overthinkerzzz · 03/02/2014 15:28

Not a deal breaker!

I have mint sauce on all roasts and occasionally HP brown sauce

mrssnodge · 03/02/2014 15:34

I blame my Dp ex and his DM , he said all their cooked food was so bland and tasteless he had to cover everything to mask the taste and got so used to the mint sauce/ tom sauce combo- I considered this childish and insulting at first but maybe he thinks that when I guzzle wine as soon as I come through the door after work everynight! ha ha

CatsCantFlyFast · 03/02/2014 15:36

The chopped up spring onion/lettuce with vinegar and sugar is what we would call 'choppy uppy' aka Yorkshire Salad. (We are from Northumberland). I wonder if the onion in malt vinegar and the cucumber version are variations of this. It is a little like mint sauce and delicious with Yorkshire puds (which are delicious with all roasts IMO)

mrssnodge · 03/02/2014 15:44

Also away fom the roast thread- DP has curry sauce over chips- (fine) then covers it all in tom sauce then rips up smallpeices of white bread to make tiny chip/curry/sauce butties??? weird!!!

thornrose · 03/02/2014 17:38

NotWithout I'm from the North East coast/Yorkshire dales and we had the same as Coola. We only have it with the Yorkshire puds though which we serve first. We've always called it Yorkshire Salad.

Crinkle77 · 03/02/2014 17:52

I have mint sauce and yorkshires with all types of roast dinner. People can have what they like on their own dinner.

frogslegs35 · 03/02/2014 19:04

I'm from up North and have never heard of pickled onions on a roast before today. I personally eat my onions straight from the jar :)

I did, however used to help my Gm make fresh mint sauce every week -mint leaves, chopped cucumber steeped in vinegar then thrown on top of the Sunday lunch. Twas delish.

I'm guilty of slathering (jar) mint sauce on all roasts, I don't like lamb but have it with pork and chicken.

I'm shocked some people don't have yorkies with every roast, I know traditionally it's with beef but I can't manage without them, it's just not the same.

FryOneFatManic · 03/02/2014 19:28

LEM If you don't want your friend's roast onions, I'll have them. Yum! Grin

EBearhug · 03/02/2014 22:35

The canteen at work put pickled silverskin onions in the cabbage today. I thought of this thread. (Mostly in a "why would people do that?" way.)

Wetthemogwai · 05/02/2014 14:05

I do love an onion, don't get me wrong (pickled OR roasted- I don't descriminate) but REALLY?! Pickles on a hot dinner with gravy?!

Also, we have had roasts together before but never at home. He didn't dare do it infront of my parents or in a restaurant!

TinyTwoTears · 05/02/2014 14:21

I wouldn't have put pickled onions with roast beef but roast onions would be good and I love whole steamed shallots.

For some reason I don't mind if you mix and match traditional roast sauces (ie horseradish, apple, mint etc) but if someone put ketchup on a roast dinner I cooked I'd be really fucking offended. I mean seriously. That's just rude.

I think I might be a sauce snob Blush

And pickles or vinegar with fish and chips is only right and proper. It cuts through the grease. And I will let you have ketchup on it as well.

hollyhunter · 05/02/2014 14:24

my friend puts mushy peas on a roast! yak!

Misspixietrix · 05/02/2014 14:30

YDNBU! LTB! Grin.

Everythingwillbeok · 05/02/2014 14:44

The first time I had sunday dinner at my ex husbands grandmas she produced a jar of pickles and everybody tucked in they all got mixed up with the gravy, gross.Never heard of it since until today!

CoolaSchmoola · 05/02/2014 20:56

My Yorkshire DM makes a salad from lettuce, finely chopped onion, cucumber, chopped mint, sugar and malt vinegar.

Sounds similar to all the non-Yorkshire 'Yorkshire salads' except we call it Old English salad, and eat it as a salad rather than with a roast.

Chivetalking · 05/02/2014 21:01

As a fully paid up roast dinner dousing vinegar peasant I reckon you're BU unless he insists you join in.

Liedownsnikey1965 · 27/12/2020 21:06

Mmm love it

Liedownsnikey1965 · 27/12/2020 21:07

Omg I love beetroot on anything I'm obsessed with it haha

Amanduh · 27/12/2020 21:12

Mint sauce mixed with gravy on a crispy, fluffy roast potato is heaven sent. If I’m having a beef roast why would I deny myself that??
