To be completely aghast at OH's roast dinner habit?!

We've been together 11 months in total but managed to avoid this til tonight (possibly because it is the first time I've actually cooked him a roast). While I was dishing up, he mentioned putting pickled onions on his dinner. Obviously, I thought he was joking so continued to serve up while he poured drinks. He then produces a jar of pickled onions from the cupboard and puts them on his dinner!!

SEVEN PICKLED ONIONS ON A ROAST PORK DINNER!!!

AIBU to consider this a deal breaker and get my online dating profile up and running?

Sorry but i always get involved with the pickled onions. They make a roast.

ExitPursuedTheRoyalPrude · 03/02/2014 08:06

My DB put lime pickle on my exquisite fish pie.

Heathen.

TickleMyTitsTillFriday · 03/02/2014 08:07

Pickled onions are the balls of the devil. I would have to LTB I'm afraid...

GlitzAndGiggles · 03/02/2014 08:09

I'm a mint sauce freak who has it with any roast meat Blush and yes I know it's for lamb but it's delish!

Mylittlepotofjoy · 03/02/2014 08:27

The weirdos in my family have apple sauce with every roast !!!! I am ashamed by them all . No idea where the habit started .... But I think it may have been my daughter then her brothers picked up on it followed my their dad . Yuck just yuck and now they are all at uni spreading the it weirdness ;)

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 03/02/2014 08:29

Bread sauce is made from milk, breadcrumbs and mace.

I would happily sit with a jar of apple sauce if I was allowed...

My dad puts pickle, mustard and ketchup on everything, including fish...

UncleT · 03/02/2014 08:32

It's appalling to ruin a good roast in such dastardly ways. The only acceptable sauces each have a corresponding meat:

Cranberry - Turkey
Bread - Chicken
Apple - Pork
Mint - Lamb
Horseradish - Beef
Mustard - Beef

Nothing else is on - copious amounts of good gravy excepting.

SimplyRedHead · 03/02/2014 09:40

I put mint sauce in cheese sandwiches :)

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 03/02/2014 09:58

My husband would do this, he loves pickled onions.

To those dissenting here... how many have 'cold meats' with pickles on Boxing Day? Christmas Dinner 'sandwiches' after the event?

Horses for courses... I don't care as long as he keeps the vinegar well away from me, hate the smell of it.

I have, as a favourite breakfast, Colmans English mustard on Hovis Original Wheatgerm toast, nothing else, just that. Deee-licious! Grin

LEMmingaround · 03/02/2014 10:03

Friends of ours cooked us a lovely roast pork dinner once. They gave a us half a whole roast onion each. Why would you even do that?

dawntigga · 03/02/2014 10:10

It's better than ketchup - mothers side of the family do this.

BoakTiggaxx

Babymamaroon · 03/02/2014 10:21

We have pickled walnuts with our roasts! Sublime! And a roast onion to boot. Delicious :)

mrssnodge · 03/02/2014 10:42

my DP has mint sauce AND red sauce on every roast- i've learned to live with it- Im not eating it after all, but was horrified at first! I go to great lengths to get a deep flavour into the gorgoeus thick gravy then he spoils it with green and red shite all over it! urggh!!!!

gotthemoononastick · 03/02/2014 10:49

You are all so lucky to have roasts!Think of the poor!Spreads horseradish on buttery toast.

squoosh · 03/02/2014 11:10

Mint sauce is crap. Mint jelly all the way.But only on lamb.

Roast beef requires horseradish mixed with whipped cream. YUM!

GlitzAndGiggles · 03/02/2014 11:54

Dp's cousin puts ketchup on EVERYTHING apart from cereal. Including roast dinners

TitsalinaBumSquash · 03/02/2014 11:59

My ex used to have smash and ketchup on top of his roast dinner. Shock It's not right.

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 03/02/2014 12:01

Ds1 (11) made himself a bagel yesterday. Marmite and peanut butter ....

squoosh · 03/02/2014 12:01

I couldn't respect someone who put ketchup on a roast dinner.

SouthernComforts · 03/02/2014 12:05

My sister eats pickled onions out of the jar whilst watching tv.

Sicko.

ToomuchIsBackOnBootcamp · 03/02/2014 12:09

I do get murderously stabby a bit annoyed if I have spent a while preparing and cooking a lovely (IMO anyway> meal, trying to create delicious well balanced flavours, only to have DH chuck pickled onions on the plate and eat them with my carefully created meal. I just think the pickled onions smell and taste so strong they must overpower all the rest of the food and give a generic vinegary onion taste to anything and everything I cook, so why should I bother making an effort? It must all taste the same to him anyway.

DH is Glaswegian. A lost cause.

cls77 · 03/02/2014 13:09

Im a mint jelly freak too Blush always have it on every roast, unless ive run out then its cranberry! Although I also like apple on pork, but mint jelly goes so well on the veggies Grin
Its also lovely in a cold meat sandwich, pork and mint jelly is especially nice when cold.

will go back into the weird corner now, where I will stay until this eves roast

cls77 · 03/02/2014 13:10

Oh and have always eaten pickled onions or eggs (even better) out the jar, had huge jars made when I was pg with DD, and now have to have omeprazole daily!!

pigletmania · 03/02/2014 13:20

You anal feckers, mint sauce is fantastic on all roasts, thrw the silly rule book away and enjoy life!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 03/02/2014 14:31

I had Yorkshire puddings in a stack y'day with maple syrup, fried bananas and ice cream.

Obviously the one with the roast had gravy on it.
