To be completely aghast at OH's roast dinner habit?!

We've been together 11 months in total but managed to avoid this til tonight (possibly because it is the first time I've actually cooked him a roast). While I was dishing up, he mentioned putting pickled onions on his dinner. Obviously, I thought he was joking so continued to serve up while he poured drinks. He then produces a jar of pickled onions from the cupboard and puts them on his dinner!!

SEVEN PICKLED ONIONS ON A ROAST PORK DINNER!!!

AIBU to consider this a deal breaker and get my online dating profile up and running?

Is he from the East End?

foslady · 02/02/2014 19:45

I love an onion bajhi (sp) with a roast beef dinner......

(gets coat)

petalsandstars · 02/02/2014 19:47

PIL don't have any condiments in their house and have gravy like water. I can't stand it and have to take ketchup and mayo etc. Not even coleslaw or potato salad or anything vaguely moist on the plate.

Pigsmummy · 02/02/2014 19:59

Husband puts HP sauce on a roast. I wouldn't mind pickled onions tbh

Bogeyface · 02/02/2014 20:01

What is wrong with some people?

Pickled onions? Pickled beetroot? HP FUCKING SAUCE?!

I thought H was bad with mint sauce on everything, turns out he isnt that unusual, still boils my piss though Angry

Hassled · 02/02/2014 20:02

I love condiments more than I love the food they go with, but pickled onions are just wrong.

Theas18 · 02/02/2014 20:04

Do I have to break it to you gently that your OH might be secretly (or not so secretly) umm ....whispers .....Northern ?

It has taken dh many years to cope with my liking of vinegar on things!

bzoo · 02/02/2014 20:07

I love roast beetroot on my Sunday roast. But today we had Chinese style lemon chicken and rice Smile

BumPotato · 02/02/2014 20:11

Erm, LTB?

Allalonenow · 02/02/2014 20:16

So many wrong combinations >>> onion barji with a roast surely it goes soggy in the gravy?? yorkshire pudding with ANY roast, mint sauce with ANY roast, picked onions with roast pork, all just very wrong

PurpleAlert · 02/02/2014 20:17

My MiL used to serve up a delicious roast beef with all the trimmings- yorkshires, thick gravy the lot.

With a side of baked beans... ( the side of the plate that is not in a separate bowl) Confused

PurpleAlert · 02/02/2014 20:18

The orangey tomato sauce from the beans mixing with the gravy... (Shudder)

MsLT · 02/02/2014 20:19

Pickled onions, pickled beetroot, pickled red cabbage or pickled walnuts are essential with a roast dinner!! Yummy!

DownstairsMixUp · 02/02/2014 20:21

Ew not for me. Marmite is used a lot in this house though. FOR EVERYTHING. Dipping, roasts all sorts!

Bogeyface · 02/02/2014 20:21

Reminds me of the first time I did Xmas dinner with H. He asked me were the rice was and I was Confused!

His parents are Jamaican and they always had a traditional British Xmas dinner, but she did rice and peas too. H has always hated rice and peas so he had plain rice. He didnt touch it! Said he forgot it was there, but still got sightly snotty when I said I wouldnt do it again, until I said he was welcome to cook it at which point he suddenly wasnt bothered :o

Marylou2 · 02/02/2014 20:22

Would never have thought of pickled onions with pork but now you've mentioned it I have to say I'm not horrified. It's not like he has Nutella with his roast.

jigsawlady · 02/02/2014 20:23

My dad puts ketchup, mustard and grated cheese on a roast dinner Hmm

Megrim · 02/02/2014 20:25

YANBU

Everyone knows that horseradish sauce should be slathered over all roasts, and pickled onions with horseradish would be really quite strange.

Now sprouts and horseradish is quite delicious as it covers up the disgusting taste of sprouts.

Bogeyface · 02/02/2014 20:25

Pork and pickles is fine, if they are cold cuts. Thats sort of the point of pickles, but it is a hot roast meal, with gravy.

I like pickled onions, but with gravy?! Bleurgh!

Bogeyface · 02/02/2014 20:27

Jigsaw

Ketchup, revolting but.....sort of ok, it is a sauce after all

Mustard, fine with pork, gammon and beef, sounds horrible with lamb and chicken but each to their own

I can not get my head around the grated cheese at all! Roast leg of lamb, carrots, brocolli, cauli, peas, potatoes and CHEESE?

For me, you win. :o

WorraLiberty · 02/02/2014 20:28

I hate mint sauce and I genuinely can't sit near anyone who puts it on their roast dinner because the smell turns my stomach...and puts me off my food.

But having said that, I don't see why it should only be reserved for lamb?

I have yorkshire puddings with every roast dinner, not just beef.

Lavenderhoney · 02/02/2014 20:29

I suppose its alright to eat pickled onions if you both do:) assume he will be busy with the lister mint later.

How strange, but onion and apple relish would be ok. Red onion though.

jigsawlady · 02/02/2014 20:34

Bogey - he even has cheese on curries!! sicko

He has this huge tupperware container in the fridge and at any one time has about 10 different cheeses.

Bogeyface · 02/02/2014 20:35

So its a case of "More dinner with your cheese Mr Jigsaw Snr?" :o

pickles184 · 02/02/2014 20:35

YABU

Where we lived oop north everyone put pickled onions on the table for folk to put on their roast beef or pork. Never with chicken though for some reason.. I have broken the habit after living with a freaked out southerner, perhaps talk to him before fleeing, maybe he can refrain if it bothers you?
For the record always used to put vinegar on chips n gravy and any green veg, gravy with pickled onion is pretty good Blush
