To be completely aghast at OH's roast dinner habit?!

We've been together 11 months in total but managed to avoid this til tonight (possibly because it is the first time I've actually cooked him a roast). While I was dishing up, he mentioned putting pickled onions on his dinner. Obviously, I thought he was joking so continued to serve up while he poured drinks. He then produces a jar of pickled onions from the cupboard and puts them on his dinner!!

SEVEN PICKLED ONIONS ON A ROAST PORK DINNER!!!

AIBU to consider this a deal breaker and get my online dating profile up and running?

My OH like dairlylea and strawberry jam. Count yourself lucky.

Marylou2 · 02/02/2014 20:43

Really Pickles? I'm northern and I have never seen a pickled onion served with a roast dinner ever! I feel I'm missing out. I've just checked with DH (southern) he's also mystified.

SIL family have mushy peas with their roast s!

I love mushy peas with battered cod from the chippy but not with a roast Envy

Allalonenow · 02/02/2014 20:47

Grated cheese on a roast dinner

foxinsocks · 02/02/2014 20:50

I have horseradish sauce with everything. I have to restrain myself from eating it straight out the jar.

Had never thought of pickled onions with a roast though

Topseyt · 02/02/2014 20:52

Have what you want with whatever you want to have it with. It does nobody any harm.

I put yorkshire puddings with whatever type of roast I am doing, not just roast beef. Hubby likes mustard on most things, but I hate it.

I never bother with cranberry sauce on turkey at Christmas because to me it tastes like putting jam on your meat, and isn't for me. Many people seem to love it though.

cornflakegirl · 02/02/2014 20:55

PurpleAlert baked beans and gravy is so, so wrong. You have my deepest sympathy Thanks

WestmorlandSausage · 02/02/2014 20:58

I would put mint sauce on every roast if it was socially acceptable.

Instead I make delicious gravy from the drippings and sweeten it with redcurrent jelly and balsamic vinegar for a 'tang'

Bogeyface · 02/02/2014 20:59

SIL family have mushy peas with their roasts!

Woohoo! I have a quirk!

We do this! It came from my mums parents family, midlanders, dont know if that has anything to do with it. But roast dinner with mushy peas and lots of gravy is lovely :o

Ericaequites · 02/02/2014 20:59

I know a man who puts grape jelly on steak and roast beef. Pickled onions and Harvard beets are nothing besides that.
Veterans will put ketchup or Tabasco on anything.

beanandspud · 02/02/2014 21:01

DS has apple sauce with any roast dinner.

I have cranberry sauce with fish 'n' chips Blush

TheArmadillo · 02/02/2014 21:04

Pickled onions with roast pork definitely sounds worth a try. Vinegar and pork is always a good combo.

CuttedUpGrape · 02/02/2014 21:05

joysmum he doesn't really have dairylea and jam on his roast, has he? Shock

TheArmadillo · 02/02/2014 21:06

Beans, cauliflower cheese and gravy is also an awesome combination, especially with steak and roast potatoes.

Mushy peas go with anything.

RandyRudolf · 02/02/2014 21:12

This is serious OP, what other sick things like this are still to be exposed. Grin

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 02/02/2014 21:16

I've never had pickled onions with roast dinner but it sounds good! We do have warm pork pie, mushy peas and mint sauce though, usually on bonfire night, now that's lovely Smile

MizK · 02/02/2014 21:18

I say just let him be, to each their own. I'm all for customising meals to maximise deliciousness.

That said, I am guilty of putting grated cheese on curry so my opinion could reasonably be judged worthless.

JohnCusacksWife · 02/02/2014 21:48

I'll never forget the first time I went to Christmas dinner at my PIL. They had pickled onions, beetroot and piccalilli on the table. Beyond weird....

Wetthemogwai · 02/02/2014 21:54

randyrudolf I'm worried too! first pickles, now what?!

He is from Liverpool HOWEVER over the last 7 years I have enjoyed many a roast up there AND 75% of my family are from Yorkshire and i have never witnessed pickle with a hot meal on either side of the Pennines!

I don't think our relationship will ever recover from this....

DPs mum eats jam on everything. People just have different tastes

EBearhug · 02/02/2014 22:00

I am beginning to understand why one of my German colleagues is under the impression that all British people have loads of mint with every meal. Mint sauce with lamb, mint choc chip ice cream and mint in mojitos isn't mint with every meal, I argued. But now I realise he's been mixing with odd people who are all around.

Another colleague (British) appears to have a family which doesn't do gravy, not even with roast dinner. I've pointed out this is grounds for divorce, unreasonable behaviour and all that - they've been together enough years that he's had time to attempt reeducation, which has clearly failed. Still married, though. Most peculiar.

mrspremise · 02/02/2014 22:11

I have raw carrots with my roast while everyone else eats evil cooked ones

FetchezLaVache · 02/02/2014 22:18

I'm northern, we never had pickled vegetables of any kind with our roasts. STBXH's family do, though. I suggest you put your foot down before he starts asking for a mug of tea with his roast as well.

BrianTheMole · 02/02/2014 22:33

Whats wrong with a mug of tea with your roast Shock

maras2 · 02/02/2014 22:36

If Hullygully was still here, she would say ' kill him '. Aww. Miss you Hully. x
