Something ive experinced quite a lot, nothing against that personally if thats what you like.

It seems so many men like that look and they cant fathom a woman who doesnt go in for it.

I hate shopping and bling, and dresses. I like books and quirky things, big, messy hair and eyeliner.

I know it cant be everyman, but it really feels like its the majority.

Do i need to get myself down jane norman?

She's naturally pretty under all that gunk - but if a fan without £000s tried to copy her, they'd look tragic. As they frequently do.

keepingthelidon · 27/01/2014 16:07

hmmmm yes, some of those pics dont look too bad, but they arent very me at all. Im a bit more bonham carter.

I was talking to a man a while ago who kept going on about me liking heels and how he likes smart nights out. so i tried to explain but he still went on and on. he text me ( trying his luck) again last night, i said i was off out for a meal, first tihng he said was ' oooh, smart casual'

i dont get it, and this obsession.

keeping - what?! That is bizarre Grin Grin

I'd be worried if the bloke was more bothered about what my style is than I am. Actually I did go out with a bloke like that once. He now prefers to go out with men.

Lj8893 · 27/01/2014 16:15

Yes id be more worried about a man discussing your clothing than a man liking the towie look.

limitedperiodonly · 27/01/2014 16:16

There used to be a feature that would pop up in various women's magazines every six weeks or so.

They'd dress a model in different outfits - jeans and t-shirt, business suit, high fashion, ultra-feminine and always something tight and down to there and up to here.

Then they'd get couples to rate the outfits. I must have read that feature dozens of times and I never saw a man go for the short, tight dress. In fact, many of them said it was cheap and obvious and they'd never so much as look at a girl in such a dress.

I'm sure some of them were even telling the truth.

Lj8893 · 27/01/2014 16:18

I've got a couple of nights out coming up and this thread just makes me want to glam up Grin

keepingthelidon · 27/01/2014 16:20

i know, its fucking weird, isnt it.

he didnt say ' have a nice time'

he said ' smart casual'

? just weird. I said that no, i dont ever do smart casual, i do scruff.

Lj8893 · 27/01/2014 16:21

Yeah he's odd, stay well clear!!!

limitedperiodonly · 27/01/2014 16:21

Odd conversation OP but my DH discusses women's clothing. He's more interested in it than I am.

He's not weird or gay, it's his job.

Men's clothing btw, but he's not blind to women's clothes. Which is good because he has a better eye than I do.

zizzo · 27/01/2014 16:23

Maybe it was his slang? Like how some strange people announce "casual!" like how they might go "random!!"

But he was trying to make a joke out of "smart casual!"

I don't know why I'm fixated on trying to understand what this bloke meant. I have a friend who randomly blurts out random remarks like this that seem very effeminate and he swears he's straight.

waceystills · 27/01/2014 16:24

Please don't go to Jane Norman Smile

Lj8893 · 27/01/2014 16:25

Jane Norman terrifys me. Its always really dark, the clothes look really cheap and they have thier music SO LOUD!!

keepingthelidon · 27/01/2014 16:26

I think jane norman wouldnt let me in....:)

CockBollocks · 27/01/2014 16:27

YABU.

Not nice to judge people on their look. Making a sweeping statement about men from a comment made by one guy is a bit ridiculous.

somedizzywhore1804 · 27/01/2014 16:27

I'm from Essex- about a 10 minute drive from TOWIE land- and no one I know thinks that looks good!! If they do they're 17 and thick as bricks.

sarahquilt · 27/01/2014 16:29

CailinDana is maith liom do hainm!

Lj8893 · 27/01/2014 16:29

I'm not 17 or thick as bricks. Smile

keeping honest its so dark in there they wouldn't be able to see you sneak in!

limitedperiodonly · 27/01/2014 16:32

I'm from Essex too. I don't live there any more and I'm far too old for that look. But if I was 21 and back there again I'm sure I'd be wearing it.

Does it really bother other people that much what people wear?

Lj8893 · 27/01/2014 16:40

Apparently so limited.

Comments like "thick as bricks" are pathetic IMO.

limitedperiodonly · 27/01/2014 17:06

Lj8893 I've looked at your profile. Before you were born Grin I used to go to a shop in Romford called Paris that sold elasticised sequin skirts, chain mail bra tops, corsetry as outerwear, lycra, rubber dresses where my mum used to dust my naked body in talc, roll it on and then polish with baby oil, Neoprene, Pam Hogg, Swanky Modes.

It occurred to me then that there might be a brief window when you're young and sexy with a killer body. Then you're a long time old - if you're lucky.

It was one of the few things in life I've been right about. These days I like to think some filthy old gits probably still find me attractive but I'd look like an S&M version of Miss Havisham in that stuff. But I've got the pictures Grin

flatbellyfella · 27/01/2014 17:10

I think they do it because they love their own misguided image, I find the look quite gross, nothing nice about everything about them being false.

keepingthelidon · 27/01/2014 17:11

i dont care what people wear, its no problem to me. I take people as they come.

Its not a look i want to wear, but there does seem to be some kind of assumption that thats what goes.

OP posts:
Lj8893 · 27/01/2014 17:13

Ahh brilliant limited

I dress fairly conservatively (usual uniform is riding boots, thick tights/ leggings and a pretty dress) but think everyone has the right to dress how they want to dress! Be that head to toe in Boden, gothic, "scruffy" like the OP, "towie", or Indeed how you used to dress Grin

sebsmummy1 · 27/01/2014 17:13

Most men are terrified of that look and the maintenance it requires. Whenever you read those quizzes in magazines they always go for the pretty natural girls, so nope, I don't think fake eyebrows, lashes, tan and boobs are what men desire at all.

JustALittleGreen · 27/01/2014 17:28

It's not my style and the vast majority of the men I know wouldn't give a rats bottom about women's fashions! There's nothing wrong with dressing like that, and nothing wrong with not. You do need to hang out with people who care about more important things than what you wear, though.
