To have caused a fuss in library ??!

I had to pop to the local library this morning to print some important docs out, as we don't have a printer. They have 6 computers, and then about 12 in their computer training room, although there was a class going on so those ones could not be used.

The 6 were all taken up; some guy looked like he was searching a job site (good on him), some other guy was reading large documents, not sure about 2 others, but then there was a girl (about 24ish) and a lad (probably a little older) sat just scrolling through Facebook, and blatantly daydreaming! There was a queue for the computers and I know some locals who do visit every day to carry out job searches etc.

Anyway, I couldn't help myself, and asked the guy on the desk why it was right for people to have to wait for a computer, for productive purposes, while people are sat wasting their lives on Social Networking, when maybe they should be taking a leaf out of the other guys' book and searching the job sites?

It really gets my back up as I'm a huge believer that you need to work hard in life. I had a chat with the lady on the other desk and she was in total agreement with me that the use of SN sites should be banned from these computers - I have written my complaint to the Council Angry

Oh my god how's the weather up there on that high horse? In all fairness.

You're confusing two very, very separate issues here. Being in a possession of a facebook account is not strictly limited to the unemployed in society. "This couple clearly did not work" - HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS? And if they are unemployed, at least they're not sitting languishing alone in a bedroom until 2pm. They're out and about, using social media for the purpose it was intended. Just because your knickers were in a twist about your own important documents, does not give you the right to pass judgement on how others choose to spend their time.

Going back to why I think you're old - I'm 30 and I certainly think you're a hell of a lot older than me - if not, you'd want to open your eyes and stop carrying on like some cantankerous old biddy. Letters to the council because machines are being used for their intended purpose by people who have no computer access at home - AKA their intended users? Seriously. You'll need to embrace social media at some point darling - you're on it.

If you were going to write a letter to the Council, you should have suggested a scheme that allows people to pre-book machines in advance giving library members priority, as is in most jurisdictions.

"My boys will be taught the principles of hard work as they grow too" - fair play. I'm planning on letting mine run amok and bringing them to sign on when they hit 18. SMH

Dawndonnaagain · 16/01/2014 15:31

Dawn - no, as I don't tend to have silly issues with peoples' choice of clothes, hair colour, piercings etc!

AnAdventure - There's a clear difference of somebody being lazy, when they don't take the time to take care of their appearance to somebody who does?

I hope your essays aren't this inconsistent. I'd be marking them down if they were.

BackOnlyBriefly · 16/01/2014 15:32

TheRealCarrieBradshaw You have seen that a random group of people disapprove of your attitude. It might be worth considering that it's your attitude that's the problem. Food for thought perhaps?

PumpkinPositive · 16/01/2014 15:33

Pumpkin - Do you often stalk other users?

Au contraire, I channel all my stalking tendencies into prying into the contents of strangers' internet usage at public libraries and then follow them about town noting their levels of inactivity. You should try it.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 16/01/2014 15:33

"no, this couple clearly did not work"

"Pumpkin - Do you often stalk other users? Bit weird that isn't it?"

But how do you know this couple don't work? Presumably you aren't following them around 24/7 - or maybe you are. Bit weird that isn't it?

You don't know the life circumstances of these people any more than they know yours.

I think it's unanimous!

For what it's worth, I was in our village today looking slightly unkempt. I have a full time job - it just happens to be my day off! And it's none of anyone's business how I choose to spend it! :)

AgaPanthers · 16/01/2014 15:45

I use Facebook to message my butler to get my VDs printed. Is that ok, OP?

UncleT · 16/01/2014 15:46

I have a piercing. Despite claims to the contrary, I am confident that I'd be taken to task by the likes of the OP for daring to be out on a weekday, particularly with no two days off in the same place from week to week. God help me if I choose to dress sloppily after 8 straight days in work clothes too. I suppose the only thing that could make it worse is daring to check Facebook in public....

insummeritrains · 16/01/2014 15:47

Work harder and get yourself a printer. People run business from FB these days.

serin · 16/01/2014 15:47

How bloody cheeky of you.

For all you know that bloke could have a mental illness, confidence or anxiety issues. He could have been planning that trip for ages, yes that's unlikely but you had no right whatsoever to have a go at him.

and the irony of using a forum to complain!!! Haven't you got something more important to be getting on with?

UncleT · 16/01/2014 15:49

The council should be petitioned to put signs up outside the library - "No loafers (unless smartly dressed)". That should take care of things.

Blithereens · 16/01/2014 15:53

Please help yourself to my first Biscuit

BeverleyMoss · 16/01/2014 15:57

completely off topic OP, my apologies - but may I just introduce you to this > .

Not only are you being VU but you sound like a right nosy cow. Stalking strangers round the village and peering at everyone's computer screens in the library as you seem to know and approve/disapprove of the way they were all being used.
You need to start MYOB Op.
