To have caused a fuss in library ??!

I had to pop to the local library this morning to print some important docs out, as we don't have a printer. They have 6 computers, and then about 12 in their computer training room, although there was a class going on so those ones could not be used.

The 6 were all taken up; some guy looked like he was searching a job site (good on him), some other guy was reading large documents, not sure about 2 others, but then there was a girl (about 24ish) and a lad (probably a little older) sat just scrolling through Facebook, and blatantly daydreaming! There was a queue for the computers and I know some locals who do visit every day to carry out job searches etc.

Anyway, I couldn't help myself, and asked the guy on the desk why it was right for people to have to wait for a computer, for productive purposes, while people are sat wasting their lives on Social Networking, when maybe they should be taking a leaf out of the other guys' book and searching the job sites?

It really gets my back up as I'm a huge believer that you need to work hard in life. I had a chat with the lady on the other desk and she was in total agreement with me that the use of SN sites should be banned from these computers - I have written my complaint to the Council Angry

Yes, YABU.

TheRealCarrieBradshaw · 16/01/2014 14:54

Ok, I'm sorry but I've seen the same pair wandering about the Village on numerous occasions and it's clear they do not work

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/01/2014 14:55

Right, so you have a reason as to why your not at work, but they can't possibly have a reason why they are there and not working or doing "important " stuff?

Hmm
Vixxxen · 16/01/2014 14:55

Also I live on the other side of the world miles away from my family.
If I had FB at the time, I would probably use it to keep contact as I couldn't make international call for lacking of money and was on maternity leave so couldn't find another job, and didn't want to anyway.
But I had another social networking that is not used in the UK.

BrianTheMole · 16/01/2014 14:55

Well presumably each person gets a set amount of time on the computer, and then they have to let the next person go. So, if this is the case, then its nothing to do with you whether they spend that time looking at important work documents, or watching a dog on youtube. Why didn't you get down there early to beat the rush Wink

I don't agree with is people wasting their time on sites as FB when they could've been using it for more productive purposes, ie job searching

So you personally verified with these people that they were, in fact, unemployed then, did you? You know they were unemployed for a fact?

Or, maybe, like you, they aren't working for a reason. Or maybe they work night shifts? Or part-time hours? Or are on holiday?

You don't know, so please stop assuming. Then I'll stop assuming you're a bitch with a stick up your arse.

PatriciaHolm · 16/01/2014 14:56

You have clearly made a whole load of assumptions just on people's appearance. Maybe they work nights? Maybe they are studying and work at weekends? Maybe they have independent means?

Maybe you should hoik those judgypants down a bit before you hurt yourself Grin

HerGraciousMaj5316LovesAFullFr · 16/01/2014 14:56

Maybe the library should only stock factual reference books. What a waste of resources for it to stock fiction, comics or recipe books!

Hmm
PatriciaHolm · 16/01/2014 14:57

the "Village"?

Do you live in Royston Vasey?

NotNewButNameChanged · 16/01/2014 14:57

TheRealyou're a real charmer, aren't you? Are you suggesting that people who wander around the village and apparently don't work (how do you know they don't work nights? - ok, unlikely, I know, but...) shouldn't be allowed to use the internet in a public library?

SilverApples · 16/01/2014 14:57

Now, if that had been either of my children and you'd said
'Excuse me, I'm sorry to have to ask you this, but could I please print out some very important documents that I need right now?'
then they'd have happily let you, and waited until you'd finished before nipping on again if they needed to.
But you didn't bother asking, you just complained to one of the staff.

TheRealCarrieBradshaw · 16/01/2014 14:57

Dawn - no, as I don't tend to have silly issues with peoples' choice of clothes, hair colour, piercings etc!

Binkyridesagain · 16/01/2014 14:57

Maybe they were looking for a job, had applied for everything they could and then spent the last few minutes on the computer having a look at FB.

UncleT · 16/01/2014 14:58

Totally unreasonable and very judgemental.

PS - printers cost about 20 quid.

TheRealCarrieBradshaw · 16/01/2014 14:58

Patricia - No

Dawndonnaagain · 16/01/2014 14:59

Whatever, Carrie, you were pissed off with somebody doing something which you didn't approve of. a) None of your business, and b) Maybe, like my son, they weren't unemployed.

SecretNutellaFix · 16/01/2014 15:01

In our local library you have to book in advance to use a computer. So that users like yourself.don't rock up full of their own importance and.considering their time is worth more than anyone elses. Time is time. Booked, in advance and in half hour slots.

Maybe you could get a job as self-appointed library bouncer. Only people who can justify to you their reason for existing can get on a computer otherwise you can turf them out. think of the power trip that would be! No more impotently writing letters for the council staff to read out to each other in whiney voices, eyes rolling, for you.

BackOnlyBriefly · 16/01/2014 15:03

Come to think of it I know an oxford post-grad who receives important information from colleagues via facebook. I don't say these were, but you don't know that.

btw just think I should mention that it's actually quite rude to look at the screens closely. You can't help seeing as you go past, but I think staring could get you asked to leave.

BigPawsBrown · 16/01/2014 15:04

So people who can't afford a computer shouldn't go on Facebook at the library.

But if people who are 'poor' or on benefits get a smart phone/laptop they're bashed for being able to afford it.

So basically, poor people shouldn't go on Facebook and should be silenced on the internet.

Madmammy83 · 16/01/2014 15:04

Here - £22. If you can't afford that perhaps you may like to peruse the job sites yourself.
