to think older teens should be made to watch what an abortion is in PHSE. (sorry possibly triggering)

I know this may be controversial but I have thought this for some time.
Abortion is legal in this country but still straight forward , informative talks about it are clouded by morality and judgement and at the end of the day, sometimes people need to have one in tragic circumstances i.e people who are made critically ill by pregnancy.
And are often as well as already scared and sad, i don't think most people make this decision lightly, are woefully underprepared which i'm sure must only add to emotional trauma.
and of course there are too many potential uninterested fathers who just utter 'get rid of it' at the hearing of potentially being a father, so disgustingly flippantly like throwing a crisp packet in the bin, I do think if they especially had seen a medical video of the procedure, well i think the number of people who just thrown that term around would be significantly less, if they had actually seen that image with their own eyes , and would be less detached from the idea and process.
I'm talking older teens , like 16+ here , not 11 year olds.
my mum and i have always though this, i would find it traumatising and pretty shocking, but compared to people who feel shame, go backstreet putting themselves at risk and people who go through with pregnancies they did not want/need. Surely a bit of discomfort is better then that being a legacy of another generation.

it would probably be better not to be born into a life with no father, a single mother working all hours, limited money and limited life.

..so you are saying it would be better for a child not to be born than have a single working parent and be poor?

catgirl1976 · 13/01/2014 20:37

Good Grief

I RTFT and there's nothing to add but OP you are possibly the most unreasonable OP I have ever read.

Just mind boggling really

rainydarkskies · 13/01/2014 20:38

Glitz - two isn't numerous.

There is an absolutely massive difference between a planned baby and a wanted baby, I can't understand why that needs spelling out (not intended rudely.)

Coco - I am saying that for me, in that context, I felt a child of mine deserved much better than I could offer them. Of course, a romantic ideal would have been one thing but I knew within weeks of my pregnancy it was impossible to do alone.

Others of course do an admirable job but it was not something I was prepared to do while I had a choice about it.

That is different for those who deal with the situation when they have no choice. So please don't manipulate my words into something that they are not.

TheNightIsDark · 13/01/2014 20:38

If it's life experiences would be limited then yes. I would agree with that.

I'm having one as between us me and DP have 4 DCs. Another one will limit the opportunities of our existing DCs, we couldn't afford it without relying on tax credits and we'd have little time for each child individually. I know there are big families who do make it work but that's not the life I want for my DCs.

gordyslovesheep · 13/01/2014 20:39

Coco it's better for a woman to control her own body - 100% YES - hth

JohnnyBarthes · 13/01/2014 20:52

I've seen one. It removed a fair bit of the angst I felt (angst and guilt foisted on me tbh by society's expectation that I should be traumatised) after having a termination myself.

I wouldn't force anyone to watch one however. There's no need.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 13/01/2014 20:56

If I was to become pregnant I would abort, I can't cope with the DC I have now. DS is asd and DD ( she is 4)constantly cries and I can't remember the last time I had a full night sleep.

To bring another child into our home would be crazy.

DH has had a vacetomy and I also chart my cycle as a double measure and use condoms when I am ovulating.

Coco as being a responsible parent it knowing when to make the right choice for a child and for me that starts at conception. For some that is making the choice of not continuing the pregnancy, some it's TOP that a child will not have any quality of life.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 13/01/2014 20:57

Amongst a million other 'reasons' why a women decides for TOP

ALittleStranger · 13/01/2014 20:58

People should know what abortion entails. That doesn't require watching a video.

Anyone having an abortion will be told exactly what will happen (and be asked to choose what method they'd like if still early enough) and will have to sign a medical consent form. No one is ignorant of what they're chosing to do.

coco44 · 13/01/2014 21:09

it's better for a woman to control her own body - 100% YES - hth

From a woman's point of view of course it is.The foetus might not agree. But hey we can't see them or hear them so what the hell!

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 13/01/2014 21:09

I've just been out and was coming back for another round. It seems like the OP has done one. What a crashing shame. Hmm

StraightLineOfResignation · 13/01/2014 21:11

Ive reported this thread because what I originally posted about, lack of awareness that the very young underage girls I went to school with, who had and had to go to clinics secretly with little knowledge of what to expect and men who grow up to be 'just get rid of it' type of guys should be made to see some kind of doc on it, theres too many , if that makes me bad so be it. And yes,I did put most of this in my op. So the stuff about being wanting to whock, anti choice, im not remotely quite the opposite. Ive been very polite in the face of the disgusting abuse ive received this thread.this is not anti abortion again for the 100th time.

OP posts:
Alisvolatpropiis · 13/01/2014 21:12

Have you had disgusting abuse? Just thought you had a lot of people saying you were wrong and indeed, a bit goady.

rainydarkskies · 13/01/2014 21:13

Coco, to put things another way, having sat in the clinic for fifteen minutes and a good ten of us coming in/out - in one area of the country, in one clinic - do you really think it would be good for all those foetus' to be born?

In terms of jobs, healthcare, education, the country couldn't cope - do you really think that's workable?

It surprised me the sheer number of terminations performed, but it did dawn on me the extent to which I was not alone. For all sorts of reasons.

I know two isn't numerous but there's many girls and women who get pregnant several times and just abort an innocent child rather than learning and using appropriate contraception

gordyslovesheep · 13/01/2014 21:21

Frankly coco I don't really care what a foetus might think - I care about the living, breathing human who doesn't want to be pregnant

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/01/2014 21:21

coco

Foetus's don't have thoughts on abortion. HTH.

LineRunner · 13/01/2014 21:22

Maybe the church, Coco? Men? Nutters?

gordyslovesheep · 13/01/2014 21:22

are there Glitz - many of them? well better they don't go onto to be neglectful, shit mothers to kids they didn't want then really!

LineRunner · 13/01/2014 21:23

Glitz, abortion is a legal medical procedure and your post is women-hating.

Coldlightofday, because they think that wins them a non-existent argument?

BettyBoo246 · 13/01/2014 21:26

To be fair you have completely backtracked from your original post
I think most posters are shocked that you think it would be reasonable to show such graphic/horrific material of such a difficult time for any girl/woman
There is enough info on the internet for anyone contemplating such a hard decision

RandyRudolf · 13/01/2014 21:28

I saw a video of a termination when I was 16/17. The images stayed with me all my life. I would not choose to have an abortion but accept that other individuals may choose too. I think in some way seeing that video did have an effect on me.
