I got on a bus this morning and sat next to the window on the lower deck.

It was very quiet and there were only two other passengers on the lower bit.

A guy got on a few stops after me and stood in the buggy section. From the corner of my eye I could see that he was staring at me.

He then came over and sat beside me. So close he was pressed up against me. I felt blocked in and extremely uncomfortable Angry .

Bear in mind he had his choice of 20 empty seats.

I said excuse me and stood up and went to sit upstairs. Younger me would have sat there intimidated.

AIBU to think he was a total creep? I cannot think of a single innocuous reason for him doing that.

I wish I'd called him out on it.

Anyone?

fusspot66 · 10/01/2014 13:38

Pickpocket?

sebsmummy1 · 10/01/2014 13:39

Yep, I would have also felt extremely uncomfortable and bloody good for you for moving!!

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 10/01/2014 13:39

Definitely dodgy.

fusspot66 · 10/01/2014 13:40

Btw upstairs is never wise esp after 6pm. Better to move nearer the driver or tell the driver. They may have radios to depot &police

HermioneWeasley · 10/01/2014 13:41

Very odd. I would also have moved, but so many women are conditioned not to make a fuss and not risk hurting other peoples' feelings.

Always go with your instinct

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 10/01/2014 13:41

That's happened to me a couple of times. It's horrible. I would have switched to another downstairs seat, or just stood though. I'd have been worried he might follow me upstairs.

AwfulMaureen · 10/01/2014 13:41

ew. I used to get this in my twenties a lot. On trains I used to get propositioned all the time and I used to take long journeys a lot so I learned eventually to say "I'd rather sit by myself" the moment a man came to sit by me....obviously if there were other seats available I mean. The looks they gave me!

Ha! Glad you stood up!

formerbabe · 10/01/2014 13:42

Yes...I once was in a playground with my toddler, it was freezing so we were the only ones. A guy by himself came into the playground and stood right next to me and didn't say a word. I told him I thought he was a freak and a weirdo and stormed off.

BunnyLebowski · 10/01/2014 14:01

Oh good.

I couldn't figure out if he was a thief or a pervert.

I was meeting a friend for lunch so was quite glammed up.

Agree Hermione - I wouldn't have had the balls to get up and move when I was younger. It makes me rage that these predatory arseholes can intimidate and harass women Angry .

There were a few people upstairs - I sat near them in case he came upstairs.

Fucking creep.

If there's ONE think I teach my DDs that's to never ever be polite before being safe. I've taught their Dad to be aware of this too...as a man it's not something which had occurred to him before. Girls are often far too easy to boss about in public.

Most people "do as they're told" when they are in public I've found.

PicklePicklePickle · 10/01/2014 14:12

This happened to me when I was about 13, my mum was sick so I went to do all her Christmas shopping for her. I was ladend down with bags and couldn't escape so I got off the bus and the fecker followed me. I had no intention of going home so went into a friends house for a bit. I didn't want him to see where I lived!!!

SparkleToffee · 10/01/2014 14:13

After several of these experiences when younger I always put my bag on the seat next to me when bus / train etc are half full / empty. That way no one can "slide" in next to you! Poor you - he was fecking odd.... well done you for moving and not sitting there feeling uncomfortable

Birdsgottafly · 10/01/2014 14:22

My DD was sexually assaulted as she got off the bus, three days ago.

The driver didn't take it seriously and drive off, leaving her in a deserted street with the man, luckily once stood up to, he panicked and ran, she was very loud.

We were not going to report it, until last night in the Liverpool echo there has been a serial offender on buses.

He to, had stared at my DD for some time.

I agree to object loudly if you ever are subject to behaviour you don't like, if you are in public.

PedantMarina · 10/01/2014 14:30

I'd like to think that 'twere me, he'd have been shoved onto the floor.

But I probably would have just gotten up and moved.

Am aghast and agog at the bus driver in Birdsgottafly's story, though!

BunnyLebowski · 10/01/2014 14:52

Jesus Birds Shock Sad ..

Your poor DD. Is she ok?

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 10/01/2014 14:55

Fuck! Birds didnyou ring the police?

Bunny glad you felt able to move. My guess is flasher Angry

Sixweekstowait · 10/01/2014 14:56

Bus driver needs reporting too - how dare he? bet it was a he

StraightLineOfResignation · 10/01/2014 14:57

I thought pickpocket too

PedantMarina · 10/01/2014 14:59

And well done to your DD for standing up to him, birds. She was brave and strong and I'm really proud of her, sitting all the way over here! I'm sure you are too.

YY to reporting both the offender and the bus driver.

maddening · 10/01/2014 15:14

I'd have moved to the seat behind him in the hope that he would feel as awkward as he.made me feel.

GlitzAndGiggles · 10/01/2014 15:23

I hate when men do this I freeze up and don't know what to do. One time a man sat directly opposite me on the train and started rubbing his leg on me and looking at me suggestively. It made me feel sick! I shouted at him to get the ffff off me and he said sorry and got up and went through to the next carriage. I was fuming! No one has any right to make anyone feel uncomfortable like that. And where I live the drivers wouldn't give 2 shits if you told them you felt threatened

complexnumber · 10/01/2014 15:28

Not sure if sitting next to someone makes you a 'perve'

It makes me rage that these predatory arseholes can intimidate and harass women angry

I think you may need to reign that in a bit. Men are allowed to use public transport.

PedantMarina · 10/01/2014 15:32

What is the legal position on whether a bus driver is [responsible] (perhaps too strong a word, but something like that) for passengers' safety? Does anybody know? And (esp if they are) what of training?

Well done, Glitz!

TimeToPassGo · 10/01/2014 15:33

complex if you can't see the difference between a man riding a bus and minding his own business and a man harassing women then I think you have problems.
