To think I shouldn't have to add work people to my Facebook if I don't want to

I got pulled aside today by my team leader that I'm 'not being very team spirited' because I don't attend team nights out (they're all 20something childless singletons who love clubbing, I'm a married 30something who hates clubbing). It was also 'suggested' that in order to 'be a better part of the team' that I should add people to Facebook as there have been 'words said about you hiding something' because I keep my Facebook private.

Yes I was also very WTAF too.

The reason I don't add them is they're airheads who I have NOTHING in common with coupled with my private life is just that, my private life. I don't want it subject to office gossip. Is that so wrong?!

AIBU about this?

Block them & then they can't even find you. Tell them you deactivated

YANBU

NewtRipley · 06/01/2014 18:34

Noooo. Oh my God. Urgh

BuffyxSummers · 06/01/2014 18:35

God what do they do when SHOCK HORROR someone doesn't even use facebook?

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 06/01/2014 18:35

Team leader is an idiot.

NewtRipley · 06/01/2014 18:35

Or what Tigresswoods says

This is discriminatory. Or something.

thankfeckthereischocolate · 06/01/2014 18:35

I dont even have my family on fb!

MegBusset · 06/01/2014 18:35

YANBU! Your 'team leader' is clearly nuts. Do people really think like this?!

What industry is it? (So I can make a mental note to avoid like the plague!)

MegBusset · 06/01/2014 18:36

Yy to block them and look for another job

EndoplasmicReticulum · 06/01/2014 18:36

How do they even know you have Facebook? I would suggest it's none of their business and I think the team leader was wrong to ask.

I have nobody from work on mine.

NewtRipley · 06/01/2014 18:37

It sounds repulsively funky

MardyBra · 06/01/2014 18:37

Yanbu.

Just tell them that you use FB to organise your swinging and dogging activities, and they wouldn't want to see pics of you in your fetish gear. That will really intrigue them put them off. Grin

MrsLouisTheroux · 06/01/2014 18:37

I have nobody from work on mine. Never have, never will!

cuttingpicassostoenails · 06/01/2014 18:38

I think it's a mistake to have work colleagues as FB friends, especially if you have nothing in common. I have known two people who deeply regretted it!

Normalisavariantofcrazy · 06/01/2014 18:38

Great idea about blocking them!

They know I have it because I've mentioned it in passing when someone's talking about a round robin if I've seen it I'll say.

I never add current colleagues to my Facebook. Once I leave and they become friends then yes I will add them

CMOTDibbler · 06/01/2014 18:38

I don't have anyone from work on FB, and none of my customers either.
My home life is mine, and I'll only share what I want

HoratiaDrelincourt · 06/01/2014 18:40

"I don't have current colleagues on my FB - it's good privacy policy, you know."

FixItUpChappie · 06/01/2014 18:41

WTF?! Is your team leader 13 yrs old? That is ridiculous.

Politely advise your boss outright that you have a life outside of work and maintain clear work-life balance boundaries and that your FB has nothing to do with your work performance.

Good grief.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 06/01/2014 18:41

I have my boss and supervisors on my facebook, they added me :) There again i wouldn't put anything on facebook that i wouldn't say to people in work/at family/ at friend house.

Groovee · 06/01/2014 18:42

Your team leader is an arse to even say this. I don't like going out at night and clubbing is my idea of hell. YANBU to not want to add people to FB either. I'd be compaining to your TL boss.

harriet247 · 06/01/2014 18:43

Dp had same conversation from his area manager-he added them all but set them to acquaintances so they can only see certain posts

Lottiedoubtie · 06/01/2014 18:43

I don't have colleagues on mine either.

Even especially the ones I occasionally go clubbing with.

Yanbu. Your team leader is a loon. Refuse her request.

Sunflower49 · 06/01/2014 18:44

Definitely not BU!

I was the same as you in my last job although the age gap wasn't so large much of the time, to me work's work and I socialise with people I know outside of it, I don't want them on my fb or in my social life just because I walk round on the same bit of carpet every day. I was condemned for it though and ultimately outcast. It sucks!Go careful :/

NewtRipley · 06/01/2014 18:46

Unfortunately they are saying pretty clearly that your face doesn't fit

FannyFifer · 06/01/2014 18:46

I would never ever add work colleagues. My home life is private.

Bloodyteenagers · 06/01/2014 18:49

I have two accounts.
One for people I like
The other for random people I have met online, work colleagues and people I meet when out and about. There's no pictures on there. Occasionally I will add a very random status.
