Friends of ours are due their first baby any day soon. They've sent a email and announced the sex and said that they will announce the name when baby is born.

BUT

They've also the name 'will surprise everyone' and 'we'd appreciate it if you don't make any comments that aren't positive- this is our decision'.

What the fuck have they named this child? I am DYING to know. It's just unfair!

Marion.

To the people saying it must be god awful or really out there if you have to preface it with a threat, all i can say is you mustn't have met the nasty bastards i know. I know people who've chosen normal names to be met with negative comments. Some people just can't keep their gob shut. My friend had a baby called Jacob and people (including her MIL) was really rude about how 'religious' it was. I could understand if they'd chosen Jesus, but Jacob is fairly normal in names nowadays i think.

Actually 2 of the names mentioned here are DH's genuine choices. Horatio and Tiberius. :)

SlightlyTerrified · 02/01/2014 10:08

People can be really unkind about 'normal' names, my SIL called her baby a really ordinary name, think along the lines David, Steven etc. The midwife asked her what she had decided to call him, she was acting all excited when asking, when SIL told her she said 'oh' with a bit of a Hmm face. SIL was really upset as it was her dad's name who passed away when she was a young child.

I didn't consider this actually until MrsKoala mentioned it, but they could be naming after a family member so it is a normal name and they think people will comment about it.

Buzzardbird · 02/01/2014 10:10

...or 'Nova Gina' Hmm?

Caitlin17 · 02/01/2014 10:14

Barry Geronimo Smith has been mentioned before to universal approval.

TheGinLushMinion · 02/01/2014 10:14

Am I missing something with Gideon? Its not that outlandish and little red trousers?

TheBigJessie · 02/01/2014 16:05

doodlekitty our dear chancellor of the exchequer, George Osbourne, was originally named Gideon. After 13 years of living with it, he reflected on his experiences and decided he could do a better job picking his first name than his father, Sir Peter Osborne, 17th Baronet, had done. In my opinion, he was right.

YouTheCat · 02/01/2014 16:11

At least he got one thing right in his life then. Hmm

I know of someone whose child has Danger as a middle name. I think it's pretty cool tbh. Grin

TheBigJessie · 02/01/2014 16:26

You I think it was the high point of his decision making. It's all been downhill from there...

P.S. I think stats show that the most common deed poll name change is to add Danger as a middle name!

5Foot5 · 02/01/2014 16:29

Achille?

(I am rather taken with that one at the moment)

phantomnamechanger · 02/01/2014 16:32

Bilbo and /or Baggins?

my moneys actually on Nelson or Mandela TBH

TheBigJessie · 02/01/2014 16:34

Calliope

Caitlin17 · 02/01/2014 17:58

Calliope is lovely.

TheBigJessie · 02/01/2014 18:17

It's pretty, definitely. Def unusual though. Have met a Princess, but never a Calliope! Pronunciation-wise and spelling-wise, there's potential for confusion. But then, these days, everyone seems to be subject to them. My children have the safest names ever, and still bring stuff home where the staff have switched or left letters out. Hmm

A child might also feel pressured to be the next Poet Laureate!

TheBigJessie · 02/01/2014 18:26

Jaeger Jinger.

Roger after a relative. Algernon Ernest in homage to the play by Oscar Wilde.

Lovecat · 02/01/2014 18:27

The third child (oh God this is going to out me if she ever comes on here) was called Louie.

Spelled like that because they didn't want to call him Louis and have people call him 'Lewis' by mistake.

MIL was going "Louie? LOUIE?" in a Bronx accent....

Lullabyte · 02/01/2014 18:28

Titus?
Quince?
Boris?
(Adolph was my immediate thought when I read the OP.)

Sadly, I agree with PP - it's probably gonna be a name they find 'unusual' but there will be 4 other little boys in his year group that will have the same name...like Felix, Dexter, or Arlo.

Flossiechops · 02/01/2014 18:31

Your all wrong it's clearly going to be Hitler. Well what's wrong with that?

Lullabyte · 02/01/2014 18:35

(To clarifly, there's nothing wrong with the names Felix, Dexter or Arlo - the 'sadly' bit was referencing our collective hot anticipation of a really heinous name!)

I have it

It's Jeremy. As in Kyle. Except it's after someone in the family.
