Piercing babies ears

fifi669 · 31/12/2013 21:05

So.... AIBU to think that piercing young children's ears and esp babies is on some level abusive as it's not got any medical reason and only the vanity of the parents?

I'm not saying it's up there with beating etc. But to purposefully put your child through pain, for a cosmetic reason isn't right surely?

'chavtastic' is less harmful than punching a hole in a baby's ear...

Weelady77 · 01/01/2014 17:53

Suppose your right it's my decision to PUNCH a hole in my dd ear and your decision to say were chavs lol!

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 01/01/2014 17:55

And they use guns. Which a lot of reputable piercing studios don't use or are trying to phase out because they're unhygienic, and can do a lot of damage because of the pressure they exert.

VampyreofTimeandMemory · 01/01/2014 17:56

I haven't called anyone a chav... you're right though, each to their own and all that.

VampyreofTimeandMemory · 01/01/2014 17:56

not to mention risk of infection, etc...

TheBigJessie · 01/01/2014 17:58

Well that's the problem Weelady77. I don't believe it should be your decision. It's the ear of your daughter. Not your ear.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 01/01/2014 17:59

Each to their own.
Hmm.
Take that to its logical conclusion where a baby is concerned...

VampyreofTimeandMemory · 01/01/2014 17:59

why did you do it weelady? I honestly want to know people's reasons for it.

Weelady77 · 01/01/2014 18:00

I think it's a subject "each to there own" but to class parents who have had there kids ears pierced as chavs is a bit snobbish very Katy hopkinsish lol

Annunziata · 01/01/2014 18:00

My DD's were done by her birth mother and I don't want to take them out. She is 9 months now.

It doesn't really bother me, she has special baby earrings, I clean them everyday and it's quite normal where I come from.

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 01/01/2014 18:02

It seems to be 'normal' in a lot of places, therein the problem lies.

Maybe when you've seen babies who have had them torn out you'll change your mind. It's horrible.

Weelady77 · 01/01/2014 18:04

I got it done as all the baby girls in our family get it done young, an old auntie of mine bought her earrings the day she was born! Me personally I don't see a problem with it BUT I do see everyone's point

Annunziata · 01/01/2014 18:07

I've never seen a baby with them torn out, but I know loads of baby girls who have had it done. It can't be that common. DD doesn't touch hers.

Weelady77 · 01/01/2014 18:09

I agree I haven't seen a baby's earrings torn out but I have seen an adults, regarding infection yeah it probably is highly infectious and you do have to be extremely carefull to keep clean and if people can't keep them clean they shouldn't get it done!

Weelady77 · 01/01/2014 18:10

Annun my dd never touched hers either and they never bothered her too

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 01/01/2014 18:10

annunziata You'd be shocked at how common it is!

The thing is why would you put your baby through the pain and risk of infection and them being torn out for no reason except vanity?

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 01/01/2014 18:14

I think it's abusive and should be illegal.
I don't buy this 'it's traditional' and 'each to their own' crap.
It's a baby ffs.

BlingBang · 01/01/2014 18:15

I wouldn't do it and don't really like seeing it, part of me is snobby about it. But, I can't get that worked up about it and it's the norm in many cultures so most here think it's awful as we've been conditioned to think that. If we lived in another culture or country we probably would have done it to our baby girls no problem.

Annunziata · 01/01/2014 18:15

How common is it? Do you have statistics?

Did you read my post earlier? It was my DD's birth mother who pierced her ears, not me. I don't feel able to take them out and let them close up. It is quite irrational (and unusual I suppose). But it is also normal where I'm from. I can't remember when my other two had theirs done, before school I think.

Weelady77 · 01/01/2014 18:15

And that's your opinion.....

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 01/01/2014 18:24

No I don't have statistics but I used to see it very often where I worked.

The comment below that was in general not directly to you.

Well weelady what isn't opinion, is that you're putting your baby through pain and risk of infection and tearing for vanity reasons. That is the cold hard facts unfortunately.

mrspremise · 01/01/2014 18:24

I personally think that it's a bit nasty until children are at high school, but that's just my personal opinion and I know damn well that very few people agree with me these days. Live and let live, IMO, people can please themselves as long as its legal...

owlbegoing · 01/01/2014 18:25

Weelady77 FGM in certain communities is considered a family thing and It's happened for years and years so that's ok too is it?
It's mutilation whatever way you put it!

Weelady77 · 01/01/2014 18:26

My dd ears are healed and fine never had an infection, as I said people are fine with it or not and I'm one of those who are fine!

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 01/01/2014 18:29

My dd ears are healed and fine never had an infection

The risk was still there and you took it though! You're lucky you've had no problems, but it doing so you increased the risk of infection and caused pain.

I just don't understand why you'd do that.

It's funny because the same people will object to putting makeup on a child, letting them wear heels from being young, yet think earrings are perfectly fine.
