It is probably present pile envy but I am finding it a bit vulgar. Plus it is making our small pile look crap.

the purpose of facebook is to harvest data from the users and sell it to advertisers in order to make a profit

But not for the people that use it. God you are depressing. I get that you don't like Christmas, but no need to try and piss on everyone else's fire Hmm

Do you not think MN profits from advertising?

Yet you are quite happy to use MN.

Philo, you really dont see the problem there?
facebook users are working for facebook but not getting paid for it, they can only get away with this because people dont bother to look beneath the surface to see whats really going on and who is really benefiting

Yeah and those carol singers?
So on your face. Like they try to show off 'look at me, i have good voice'. Attention seekers, i m telling you.

And my neighbour who gave me a plate of mince pies.showing off! And tacky.
Why does she think that we need mince pies to be happy? We are fullfilled with our meaningful porridge 365 days a year.

Oh ffs, I can't believe I wasted two minutes of my life watching that. Two minute of my life I will never get back. Jeez, that stuff is pretty obvious anyway isn't it? But I like using fb and actually I don't really give a shit about all that. I use it for my benefit. Of course others are turning a profit out of that. Its not a free world. So? Hope this clears things up for you. Hmm

Loyalty cards harvest your data but I still love me some club card points.

YABU for going on Facebook on Christmas day! (Only because alot of people post photos of 1000's of gifts and it can upset). I had three gifts, my DH had five, my Dad had a little bag and my son had his own collection. We spent the day eating, laughing and having Nerf gun fights. Just enjoy! Who really gives a fuck how others spend Christmas? Enjoy YOURS with your family. I hope your day was awesome x

Going on FB on Christmas Day is awful but MN is fine . Arguably it takes longer to MN than FB.

I'm with BlingBang

I've just enjoyed a brief chat with sister back home, when she posted a pic of her yule log on the plate I bought her for xmas back when I first came to Italy. And chatted to my cousin and uncle in Belgium. And looked at the tree of an US based old mate from a board we spent many years on together. And yakked with some of the other BritinItaly people I know over pics of our AngloItalo kids grinning like mad over the present that made them squeal.

Facebook is great for the thinngs that keep you connected with the "little bits" of the lives of the people you love, very far away. Little bits don't warrant an email or phone call of their own, but make you feel "in touch" and part of their lives in an onging, included in daily bits and bobs sort of way.

I'd kind of expect the business providing that platform to want to make money put of it.

I have had a very nice relaxed facebook Christmas as well as a very nice relaxed real one.

If I hadn't run out of teabags it would be perfect.

I have to laugh at all the fb photos showing huge piles of presents under the tree. These same people are constantly whinging about how "poor" they are and how much they hate their min wage jobs. I hope they enjoy getting that credit card bill next month.

Also, these same people post passive aggressive comments or ignore the good fortune I have throughout the year; holidays, new car, bonus, new house, expensive clothing, etc. They are offended saying I am boastful.

So it is fine for them to boast but offended when others do. Ha!

I am a good friend. I'm always helping and saying nice things to my friends. I'm glad for their bounty. Too bad they can't be happy for anyone elses. That was my point.

I didn't post pictures of our tree with presents under it, but I think a Christmas tree looks naked without presents under it. They're so sparkly and beautiful.

Ymight BU - but then so might I be. I too find it vulgar. Not envious but I wouldn't post pics of all my DC's pressies on FB. It's a bit "Look what we got them meets look how much our children are getting."
Having spent way too much on this that and the other, I noticed that my 6 year old DS' favourite pressie was, as last year, a pack of blu tac.

I don't mind looking at the overloaded tree and presents for DC. What really annoys me is my DD's very close friend posting a photo of her new car and pushbike her DH gave her for Christmas.

This goes on all year.

Report
CuttedUpPear · 26/12/2013 08:07

I don't mind the pics of wrapped presents under the tree, that's quite christmassy.

It's the ones that DD's friends are posting now, of all their unwrapped presents lined up for all and sundry to admire that I find really tasteless and boastful.

Yuk.

onlysettleforbutterflies · 26/12/2013 08:19

Yabu it's just a lovely christmassy photo, I think people are reading too much in to it, who knows what is under the wrapping paper, I use Facebook as a way of uploading photos and printing them off, saves me faffing around with cables etc.its also a nice log to look back on.

I would be mortified if people thought I was ever showing off.

I love Facebook as it means I am in touch with my relatives all over the world, prior to Facebook it was a Christmas card once a year, now we chat, have got to know each other and its lovely seeing their children growing up.

I find myself quite amused by facebook's targeted ads - I given then marks out of ten for them.

I love facebook & think people who get all angsty about it are usually missing the point.

I don't see anything wrong with being online over Christmas. I'm practically alone, had no kids this year and in the house which I am leaving in under a week with a partner I told I was leaving the day before Christmas eve. I wanted to be online so I didn't feel so crop and lonely. It was bloody awkward this year and both Facebook and mumsnet helped to bring a smile to my face
