It is probably present pile envy but I am finding it a bit vulgar. Plus it is making our small pile look crap.

It's good for the economy.

Absolutely!

mistermakersgloopyglue · 25/12/2013 22:24

What is the point if posting massive piles of presents in Facebook?

I get that you might want to buy shitloads of stuff for whatever reason, but why post the actual pile of unopened presents on the Internet?

HaroldTheGoat · 25/12/2013 22:24

All Facebook is, is a way of keeping in touch with people surely.

If someone shares a pleasant Christmas photo and it gives you these bad burny feelings then they are clearly not a friend and i wonder why you don't just remove them.

Maybe you shouldn't listen to me, I've had a consumer orgy and I am now rolling in plastic tat.

And I love it.

perplexedpirate · 25/12/2013 22:25

Posting a picture of a gift you love is completely different. That's an expression of gratitude, for one thing.
TBF, my timeline is full of smiling children opening presents and it's lovely.
I'm just going to ignore the ones I don't like.

Philoslothy · 25/12/2013 22:26

I posted mine because they looked all Christmassy and twinkly. I spent hours wrapping them all. Each gift had a photo from a past Christmas on and were decorated with snowflakes , candy canes, baubles and cinnamon sticks.

I was also being a bit of a smug show off because unlike many MNers I am a flawed human being.

VivClicquot · 25/12/2013 22:27

YABU - because Christmas isn't just for misanthropes.Wine

HerlockSholmes · 25/12/2013 22:28

Not all that interested in the size of a pile of presents. as ling as my ds has things he can enjoy and grt excited by i am happy. sometimes it looks like a competition though.

i did post a picture of ds sporting his new pyjamas with a couple of his gifts for the people who gave him them to see.

200Cigarettes · 25/12/2013 22:29

mistermaker by that rationale what's the point of any social networking site/media? The entire purpose of any social media, is to share. Whether you like seeing such things is another issues entirely. If we go but the what's the point argument, then what's the point in uploading holiday snaps, what's the point on uploading a photo of a nice meal, what's the point in uploading photos of your kids? Whose to say one genre of photo is more "worthy" or has more purpose on the internet than the other when it comes to a social networking site.

I find it really odd when I hear people bitching about FB. FB is made up of your circle of friends. If you are not interested in what this social circle you have chosen to create for yourself online is presenting itself to you, then quite simply hide or delete them.

As someone said up thread, FB isn't compulsory.

HaroldTheGoat · 25/12/2013 22:32

Maybe they should invent FrgualBook for competitive non spenders or SadBook for the people that just like to hear all the bad news.

You can't win with some people, can't put any sort of news on without it being classed as showing off.

I put what I want on and if anyone dosent like it they are welcome to piss off my news feed.

Philoslothy · 25/12/2013 22:33

I love having a window into the lives of people I care about, courtesy of FB.

I am a bit of a leftie hippy when it comes to Christmas, our children get much less than others . However when my friends - who I like and choose to have in my life - post pictures of piles of presents - I am just pleased that they are having the day they want.

FanFuckingTastic · 25/12/2013 22:33

I love the pictures my friends put on Facebook. I felt sad that I couldn't be as generous to my own children or be with them today, but that's my own situation, it doesn't mean I am unhappy or jealous that they have more for their own. I loved their pictures this morning too, they were lovely.

mistermakersgloopyglue · 25/12/2013 22:40

Because as other people have said, it's nice to see smiling children excitedly opening their gifts and having a lovely time. I cannot think of any reason to post the massive pile of unopened presents other than to say 'look how much I have bought'. I did briefly think about posting ds's pile last night but then realised that of course no one else would be interested.

I obviously will not post it here but a guy I went to school with posted his pile of presents and it was fucking obscene! Honestly, no exaggerration, there must have been about 300-400 Presents there. He is a massive show off, always has been and it was so obviously a vulgar 'look at me' post. I might delete him tonight actually, he gets right on my tits!

BlingBang · 25/12/2013 22:42

But surely a Christmas tree just looks so much more lovely and special with presents under it - whether it is a lot or a few. There's just something lovely about presents under a tree.

mistermakersgloopyglue · 25/12/2013 22:43

And I don't mind seeing presents when it's part of a Christmassy tree scene with some presents underneath.

It's when you see pictures of the 'haul' on its own, usually with some kind of reference to being 'spoilt rotten' (bleugh!) that irritates me. Bah humbug!

Philoslothy · 25/12/2013 22:43

Mistermaker I have given another reason to post the picture , it just looks Christmassy, the twinkly lights on the tree , bows and adorned gifts.

We must have had over 100 gifts under our tree- but there were almost 20 people sat around the tree getting gifts.

mistermakersgloopyglue · 25/12/2013 22:43

X posts with blingblang there.

Philoslothy · 25/12/2013 22:44

I suspect most picture of gifts are under the tree pictures. .

I did a photo of some pictures in isolation because the children and I had gone to do much trouble with the wrapping.

ilovesmurfs · 25/12/2013 22:45

The tree does look fab with all the presents under it! And o like the tranquility of it before the chaos when my five get up and its madness of paper and boxes and bits of toys everywhere!

My parents have photos of our x!as tree with presents under it, I love looking back at those pics amd rememberign my childhood xmases.

BlingBang · 25/12/2013 22:52

And to those who sneer at FB - when you have family and friends hundreds and thousands of miles away, it's actually a fantastic way to be able to stay in touch and get a little glimpse into the lives of those you care about and share your own etc.

Lazysuzanne · 25/12/2013 22:52

' The entire purpose of any social media, is to share. '

the purpose of facebook is to harvest data from the users and sell it to advertisers in order to make a profit

Philoslothy · 25/12/2013 22:54

But that isn't the purpose for the users. Most things have multiple purposes

carameldecaflatte · 25/12/2013 22:54

I've seen polar opposites on my fb today.
One friend posting with sanctimonious righteousness about how her children have three presents each and wondering how they'll feel when they see others with an excess.
And another posting a million of her kids opening presents, the dinner table, the dog...

Philoslothy · 25/12/2013 22:55

My children have all had 3 gifts, I posted a picture of one child's pile of three. Can't imagine commenting on other's gifts though.
