to wonder who, apart from shooting enthusiasts and alcoholics, needs a hipflask?

Saw a lovely engraved one in House of Fraser. Considered buying it for a family member and then thought about it a bit... Leaving aside the fact that they can look lovely, who would actually use one? Our attitude towards booze has changed so much that if anyone I know actually took a snifter from a hipflask in real life these days I would assume they had a serious drink problem. And would probably be right. Just that back in the day people didn't turn a blind eye to it....

Cowboys.

CrohnicallySick · 23/12/2013 16:29

My dad uses one when he goes to watch football or anything else where he might be sitting around in the cold for a while.

quesadilla · 23/12/2013 16:30

santana quite.... not really the done thing in the modern workplace is it :)

DH has 3, 1 average size the other 2 are small, he uses them when he goes camping or on motorbike rallys.

Postmen. At least the poor man delivering to use today looked like he could use one.

But it's Christmas. It's the law that BHS must sell a combination set of socks, hip flask and cuff links in a black box with a label that says something about 'gentlemen' on it.

whois · 23/12/2013 16:31

People who go to the football, people who go hiking or skiing. People who go to festivals. Bonfire night or fireworks parties. I think it's probably one of those things where if you have it you'll find opportunities to use it.

HyvaPaiva · 23/12/2013 16:31

They are traditional at weddings and ceilidhs here and put in men's sporrans. Also at cold outdoor events like bonfire night or on Hogmanay.

Delivering to use = delivering to us. Xmas Blush

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/12/2013 16:32

DD1 bought her friend one last Christmas. She uses it for vodka, pre-clubbing, I believe.

Pagwatch · 23/12/2013 16:32

Students apparently
Fill it with vodka and take it to the clubs/pubs

Trills · 23/12/2013 16:32

Skiiers.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/12/2013 16:32

Snap, Pag. :)

quesadilla · 23/12/2013 16:33

yeah I can see the outdoor thing (football, camping, whatever). Other than that, not so much.

mistlethrush · 23/12/2013 16:33

If I had one I would be using it (with vodka in I think) over the next 3 days...

quesadilla · 23/12/2013 16:34

I would definitely have used one if I'd had it today, battling around the shops with a buggy in gale force winds.
Can you put wine in a hipflask or does it have to be hard stuff?

SelfRighteousPrissyPants · 23/12/2013 16:36

I was given one for Christmas and tbh I only used it the once on my Christmas day walk on a windy beach with a cold! It was worth it though Xmas Smile

crazyspaniel · 23/12/2013 16:37

My parents bought one of these (well, it came with a bottle of brandy) for my DH last year. He has used it when hill-walking.

Dominodonkey · 23/12/2013 16:46

My dp got two last christmas (by accident) he has used both quite a few times.
A word of warning do not take one to Disney. It's quite embarrassing when dp, dsil and dmil have to down brandy at 9am as its not allowed in!
Plastic bottles full of alcohol are apparently fine though!

5Foot5 · 23/12/2013 16:52

Oh I didn't think they were for using. I thought they were just for giving as presents to male relatives when you can't think of anything else Grin

quesadilla · 23/12/2013 16:52

domino :)

My DP. He wanted one and likes to think of an excuse to use it. Usually when he is going to be out in the cold for a while. Fireworks, snow. I think he took it on a hike for when he reached the top. Sure most normal people don't need one though!

SugarHut · 23/12/2013 17:04

My grandparents take theirs when they go on long walks with the dogs. They love them.

TalkinPeace · 23/12/2013 17:07

walkers

splendid things for a tipple at the top of the hill before setting off down

cardibach · 23/12/2013 17:08

I shall use mine at the Boxing Day swim. If I go in, it will be essential. If I don't, then it will make standing on a cold beach watching the rest of them more enjoyable!

soontobeburns · 23/12/2013 17:37

I have one. I use it to fill up with spirits when I go for a night out. Can usually get 2 drinks outta one so saves me about £8.
