to wonder who, apart from shooting enthusiasts and alcoholics, needs a hipflask?

Saw a lovely engraved one in House of Fraser. Considered buying it for a family member and then thought about it a bit... Leaving aside the fact that they can look lovely, who would actually use one? Our attitude towards booze has changed so much that if anyone I know actually took a snifter from a hipflask in real life these days I would assume they had a serious drink problem. And would probably be right. Just that back in the day people didn't turn a blind eye to it....

Even if not used much / at all, a hip flask is a Nice Thing

Me when I'm going to gigs and don't want to pay £6 for a drink!

gobbynorthernbird · 23/12/2013 17:44

I'm not an alcoholic, I'm a pirate. The rum is part of my persona.

AnneWentworth · 23/12/2013 17:46

I bought one for my dad a few years back. He is terrified of flying but flies regularly and usually has a couple of brandies to settle his nerves (he never drinks brandy).

MrsDavidBowie · 23/12/2013 17:48

Dh uses one for golf in the winter sometimes.
Has it with a bacon sarnie on the ninth.

Hawkmoth · 23/12/2013 17:50

Musicians.

Think of all those brass banders playing carols...

Merlotmonster · 23/12/2013 17:53

For going horse racing in the winter...perfect for a lovely warmer like port or brandy...and saves queing at the bar !

getdownshep · 23/12/2013 18:07

Got my dd one from Urban Outfitters for Christmas. Its pinkHmm
She wants it for festivals I think.

MammaTJ · 23/12/2013 18:09

Rugby players. Perfect for journeys to away matches (on the coach, obviously).

Lambzig · 23/12/2013 18:09

DH uses his for winter walks, bonfire night, things like that. Generally to be passed around for a quick tot. (He also took it to the panto when he took DD the other night to get through it, which I don't quite approve of)

Everyone needs a hip flask. I love mine. It has transformed my experience of hiking.

wonkylegs · 23/12/2013 18:11

We've taken one for when we go walking, there's something about having a nip at the top of a windy mountain.
DH got his for being bestman to his best mate.

nikkihollis · 23/12/2013 18:13

I've just had to google what one is. I can see the attraction of a nice shot of something on a cold day, but If you are a skier, biker, rider etc, isn't it dangerous to be drinking alcohol? Or are they for apre ski, apre bike etc?

AscoyneDAscoyne · 23/12/2013 18:13

DH loves his. His friends and him all like to pass them round at the beginning of weddings, it makes them feel all manly.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 23/12/2013 18:14

I gave one to an archaeologist of my acquaintance once.

kc77 · 23/12/2013 18:15

I use mine when I am skiing, bit of whisky, lovely :)

SilverApples · 23/12/2013 18:15

I love mine, I don't take it if I'm driving anywhere. It's usually got amaretto in it.
Long, cold train journeys, especially those with changes.
Nature hikes, walking on the Downs and nocturlal excursions involving bats or moths or badgers.
Bonfire night, Burning of the Clocks (took mine to Brighton last night)

HerRoyalNotness · 23/12/2013 18:16

Skiing And golfing, a tipple always goes down well

mrsjay · 23/12/2013 18:16

Dh has 2 both when he was best man he doesn't use them though just for dust decorations

SilverApples · 23/12/2013 18:17

Oh, yes Tee. Excavations in this country can be nippy, I've taken mine to digs.
And folk festivals.
In fact, I take it most places unless I'm working or driving. It's only a little one.

BornToFolk · 23/12/2013 18:19

I used to have an awesome one. My dad bought it somewhere in Eastern Europe and it was all Soviet, with Lenin's head on it.
I used to fill it with vodka (of course!) and take it to festivals, then just buy coke and tip it in.

Unfortunately I've lost it. Sad. If I still had it, I'd take it on walks, or possibly when watching DS play football.

doggydaft · 23/12/2013 18:32

No sporran is complete without a hip flask Grin
Although DH usually has Jack Daniel's in his rather than the traditional whisky.

HermioneWeasley · 23/12/2013 18:38

Taking a hip flask to Disney?!

Downing brandy at 9am?!

MissMarplesBloomers · 23/12/2013 18:43

Great for winter weddings. Was at one on Saturday where a large hip flask of Sloe Gin was passed round & very welcomed!!

WeAllHaveWings · 23/12/2013 18:45

My dad and dh both have one for fishing and they have been used at weddings (have you seen the cost of a nice malt in a hotel?)

Dad doesn't fish now due to ill health but still likes a wee dram everyday and tries to get us to use it to bring one into him whenever he's in hospital overnight (much to his disgust we refuse this).
