Buggies must be folded by law, if a wheelchair user wishes to board

I know this can be a hot topic so thought I'd share that stagecoach have new signs on their buses stating that buggies must be folded by law if a wheelchair user wishes to board. Let's hope it's actually enforced.

So I'm guessing that's a no from you Retro.

From whats been said on the link you posted, Mumsnet only mentioned more storage space for folded up buggies, not the same as buggy spaces

GobbySadcase · 19/12/2013 22:57

So lovely to find out MNHQ is disablist to it's roots.
Not actually surprised...

GobbySadcase · 19/12/2013 22:57

And no I didn't type that apostrophe.

Retropear · 19/12/2013 22:58

No Jaded that is your take.

The fact is young mums need to get out, many don't have cars and buses should be accessible to all and all should be encouraged to use them.

It is harder for young mums now to travel by bus as the areas you used to be able to use ie the front seats and open spaces are now allocated to OAPs and wheelchairs.

There should be buggy spaces too,but obviously it would cost.

OddFodd · 19/12/2013 22:59

Retro - that article's from 2010. The one I linked to is from this year - where MN is used to make the case for the wheelchair law.

Given your sextuplets are now no longer in a pushchair, you could start a project to campaign for buggy space. Although, given that it's no longer on your priority list, I suspect you won't bother.

SpikeyChristmasTree · 19/12/2013 23:00

What about old mums, are they not allowed out?

Retropear · 19/12/2013 23:01

If you are in a front seat you should move for an OAP who use non rush hour buses a lot.It is written clearly on every bus.I never sit at the front because of this.

Moxiegirl · 19/12/2013 23:02

Young mums? What about older mums. Or dads.
My dp is a sahd but he drives, or walks. If he got the bus he'd move for a wheelchair user, because he's not a complete c...

Binkyridesagain · 19/12/2013 23:02

Older style buses don't have spaces for wheelchairs, buggies, shopping trolleys or any other thing with wheels, they have seats. and some storage space.

it was only when wheelchair spaces were provide that you could wheel anything on to a bus.

In the good old days, you collapsed your pram and walked on to the bus usally clutching a baby/toddler to one hip whilst lifting the pram up the steps.

OddFodd · 19/12/2013 23:03

Young mums can fucking walk

IamInvisible · 19/12/2013 23:04

One of the conditions of carriage of Stagecoach is you will vacate the spaces for the elderly and disabled, if they need it.

They, also state that they will only carry unfolded prams if there is space available and it is at the discretion of the driver. They do go on to say, passengers in wheelchairs have absolute priority by law. Here

But most of us know all that anyhow!

Binkyridesagain · 19/12/2013 23:04

Wheelchair users should be able to get out but many don't because the buggy users are talking up the allocated wheelchair spaces on the buses.

Retropear · 19/12/2013 23:07

Spikey what a silly post.Hmm

Young mum as in mum of young children.

No I won't be starting any campaign but I think there is a valid need for one.

Babies/ toddlers deserve safe places to travel, new mums need to get out.Demonising those with several tiny children being will discourage them from bus travel.

Having designated buggy spaces would encourage such mums to get out and on the bus.

GobbySadcase · 19/12/2013 23:08

I'll only demonise those who fail to comply with the law.

Why the hell to I open these threads????????

I know it makes me feel hated and dismissed, so why do I bother? Ffs must learn

SpikeyChristmasTree · 19/12/2013 23:09

Why is it silly? Young mum implies a young woman with children. You'll see I'm not the only one to infer that from your use of the language.

Tinks42 · 19/12/2013 23:09

im not going to read most of the thread or Id be much older than I am now! My take on it is buggies should be light weight and manageable. I work in the childcare industry and they are like cars almost and have wheels that cant get in anywhere, its really rather senseless. I go with lightweight non 3 wheel stuff to be honest. oh and foldable...

Sirzy · 19/12/2013 23:11

Retro - surely that makes if more important to help others by showing a bit of decency collapsing a Pram and making the most of the available space? That way nobody is left having to wait.

Actually double I've had the opposite reaction, it's been nice to see the majority agree with the law on this and there are only a few ignorant disabilist posts (though obviously that's still a few too many)

RodneyTheChristmasElf · 19/12/2013 23:11

Can we start a campaign for separate buses for fuckwits and issue them with a badge so they're easily identifiable without having to engage? That would solve the problem.

SpikeyChristmasTree · 19/12/2013 23:12

Do people in wheelchairs not need to get out? How do they get to work? Or to school? To hospital? To the shops?

If you see such a need for buggy spaces, start the campaign. Stop trying to justify stealing the provision that people have fought for, been humiliated for, for years.

IamInvisible · 19/12/2013 23:12

Do you know what is funny about this thread? I live in the arse end of nowhere, the buses here are those mini bus type things. They don't have low level access and I can't walk to the bus stop, so don't use them. But when I drive past the stop, there waiting are the young mums with the buggies folded either holding a baby or the hand of a toddler.

When the bus returns they get off, put the buggy up, load up the shopping hop back on, retrieve child usually from a pensioner, sit it in the buggy and off they go. Because they have no choice! It is either that or stay in. I live on an Army base and a lot of the men are away for 6 months, so if the women can't drive, they've had it.

There are so many excuses on this thread and every other thread about this subject. You can fold of you have to. You just don't want to. I remember when I was a child, women had bulky prams, they folded them on the bus. They had no choice. Woman up, ffs!
