To say it's mainly a 'white voice' on this forum?

I have been on the site for a few weeks now. I have noticed that it is possibly dominated by white women. If I am wrong please let me know, however I personally do not hear any black or asian voices. Or anything relating to those communities whether it be food, culture, clothing, traditions or issues specifically found in those communities.

I'm white but Italian rather than British and I've found lots of fellow Italians/continental Europeans (+ British expats who live in Europe) on this site.

FWIW my partner is Asian, so any future DC I have will be mixed race...if I'm still on here in 5/10 years time posting "Aargh my DD won't eat any fruit" or "Why doesn't DS tidy his room?" I don't see what difference their colour will make or how anyone would know.

garlicbaubles · 17/12/2013 16:42

If this was meant to be a goady thread, it's a huge fail Xmas Grin

I'm sure Mumsnet is majority white, reflecting the UK population. You do see some unconscious racism or white privilege. Again, that's reflective of the population - and it is usually called out on here.

If Jesus existed, he would have been black. Merry Christmas Xmas Smile

softlysoftly · 17/12/2013 16:42

Hang on someone said posters give away their whiteness by being "privileged"??

That's why we never got the horrible dark meat chicken curry bone crap in our house only nice white breast meat. And we had a back garden not a back yard.

He Thought it's because we are posh, turns out it's just because we are white!

FFS innit Wink

ouryve · 17/12/2013 16:44

Do people who are not white have different coloured text in their posts or something, OP Hmm

You're making a lot of assumptions and may be very surprised.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 17/12/2013 16:44

I've reported several Islamophobic posts recently

Surely that just tells you the poster probably isn't Islamic. Unless you're saying Islamophobia is restricted to whites.

oscar126 · 17/12/2013 16:44

How very odd

LittleTulip · 17/12/2013 16:44

I do however agree with Katherina about the islamophobic comments. But I don't think the OP was getting at that.

LaFataTurchina · 17/12/2013 16:50

In my head Jesus is Arabic - We had a big Coptic Christian Egyptian and Syrian population in my secondary school and they always identified themselves as Arabic.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 17/12/2013 16:57

KatherineMinola: There is quite a bit of racism on MN that goes unchecked on the threads. I report (or engage, if I have time and it seems worth it), but I rarely see others engaging / pulling the poster up on it.

I'd just like to pull you up on your utter bollocks here. I'm been on some real shit-stirring incredibly racist threads on here recently and the overwhelming majority have pulled up a tiny minority on their racist shite.

To say that racism goes unchecked on here is completely untrue.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 17/12/2013 16:58

My posts show up as Lavender Grin

HoFuckingHoFuckingHoneydragon · 17/12/2013 16:58

According to our emoticons the predominant colour of a Mnetter is yellow, unless you are sad, then you are purple. We all turn green when we are jealous, or red when ragey.

So logically, our voices are yellow, green or purple too.

Ipso Facto (pronounced with a yellow accent and dialect).

I find it tiresome when ops don't think things through logically.

WilsonFrickett · 17/12/2013 17:00

I do agree with you heartbroken however did make the point on a thread about Scottish Nationalism that there's an English-centricity about MN which can be a little tiresome. There was a poster in dire straits about a school issue once and the thread got totally derailed by people calling troll because the English schools were on holiday. (Scottish schools are different).

However I do agree that it was also called out by many posters. It can just be a bit tiring sometimes.

AChristmassyJerseySpud · 17/12/2013 17:02

Well the background for the website is white

I don't heard voices or see people in my head as i read the posts...

sebsmummy1 · 17/12/2013 17:03

These sort of threads always smack of inverted racism to me. Why did you wake up this morning and think of this? What 'race' are you?

I must be an absolute freak as I don't wander through life counting the demographic of the people I may see in RL, on TV, on the internet. I just talk to everyone the same and go to sleep each night.

EmpressOfTheWellOfLostPlots · 17/12/2013 17:05

I'm white. MIL is black.

She was once asked to take a dish "from her culture" to an event. She gave them a choice between shepherds' pie and beef cobbler.

I think this thread is worded very wrong. Just because I am black does not automatically mean I have differnt tradtions, culture food and so on. I am British so have a British culture.

I think the op is either very uneducated or they misinterpreted what they were trying to say.

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 17/12/2013 17:09

Lol at cashncarry - yeah I know it was back on page one but it was funny.

CuriosityCola · 17/12/2013 17:10

Most random thread award goes to the op ~/

NewtRipley · 17/12/2013 17:10

"dominated". Interesting choice of words

NewtRipley · 17/12/2013 17:11

word even.

I am blue

GoshAnneGorilla · 17/12/2013 17:12

Heartbroken - ooh, I would say that varies. Out and out racism (and any other ism) generally does get slapped down quickly, but some of the more insidious stuff might be there for a while, before some one comes along and says "hang on a minute".

Also, the site does seem to go through periods where there are loads of bigoted posts/trolls. Yes, they get slapped down, but it's no fun having to do so and it can make the site very wearing.

Back to the OP, I think it makes it more interesting that you often don't know poster's background.

NewtRipley · 17/12/2013 17:15

I see more ageism going unchallenged than racism.

Actually, this site is bloody good at calling people on ignorant bigoted attitudes, being dominated by mainly intelligent people. IMO

TheNightIsDark · 17/12/2013 17:18

I am ginger. I'm not even white I'm fucking translucent Hmm

I only know the races of some posters if they mention it. Same as sexuality, weight etc. it doesn't change how I view what they type as it doesn't matter.

ouryve · 17/12/2013 17:18

ITA, Gosh. And not just in terms of the colour of their skin, but where they live, whether they're wealthy or far from it, whether they have disabilities....

I don't need to know these things, unless it's relevant.
