I think he is an excellent role model for young people. Works hard, does not get in the papers for the wrong things and IMO he does have a very good 'dry' sense of humour.
Sometimes it is so easy to forget that we are supposed to be voting for
a sports award, not for someone who is is caught up in the whole 'celebrity' lifestyle.
Another person who does not get the votes but is a brilliant sports woman and actually an pretty amazing person, who works very hard outside of the media spotlight is Christine Oroughou - she is another person who considers herself a sportsperson and NOT a media celebrity.

HesterShaw · 16/12/2013 15:18

I voted for Christine, because I knew Andy would be a shoe in.

She is a wonderful athlete, one of the best we have ever had. She's hardworking, determined, modest and kind - a proper role model.

letzygonsbezyons · 16/12/2013 16:58

I loved his speech, makin fun ofhimself for sounding boring even though he saidhe was excited! thatwas brilliant.

I love the guy, and h achieved a goal thats been frustrating people for many years, wether your asports fan or not.

and if you ever see him off court and relaxed hes got quite the senso of humour.

but agree it should be called sportsperson.

snowed · 16/12/2013 17:15

The same goes for actors, musicians, artists, writers and scientists. The media will often prefer those with "personality" above those who are genuinely the best at what they do.

queryremelatonin · 16/12/2013 18:55

Seems very genuine, incredibly hardworking, doesn't pretend to be something he's not, dry sense of humour, has more self restraint and dignity than the vast majority of media "personalities."

Has had to tackle his flaws both in terms in of on court temperament and learning to deal with the media, in very public view. Despite seeming like quite a private individual.

I find his comments refreshingly honest at times. And I agree with previous poster about the forearms. What's not to like really.

I love Andy Murray so I think YABU. He actually does have a great personality. Just because he doesn't come out with the old fromage like people like Gary Lineker doesn't mean he hasn't got a personality.
Although I may have to agree about Nigel Mansell....

drivingmisslazy · 16/12/2013 20:43

YABVVVU I love Andy Murray too.

Busyoldfool · 16/12/2013 21:06

YABVU OP. He is intelligent, seems like he treats his team and family well, is funny, has achieved so much in his sport, been so very disappointed and come back fighting. He is not a great big self-promoting "Personality" - but in my view an excellent role model and someone to be proud of.

Busyoldfool · 16/12/2013 21:08

By the way - I agree with you Hester about Christine.

daisychain01 · 16/12/2013 22:51

He reminds me of my nephew, quiet, deep and not superficial in anything. That is what I call a real personality, better than all the crap "celebrity" there is nowadays.
