He's just won "personality of the year" why?? I know he won Wimbledon, but even so...

OP posts:
Justforlaughs · 15/12/2013 22:28

Where the hell did I speak badly of him? Confused I said I think he's a good sportsman, a great tennis player, a really nice man, but doesn't come across as being a big "personality" what's bad about that? I did think he did a great speech after Wimbledon though. I was just watching him accept his trophy from Martina and thought that he wasn't coming across very well. He did admit it though Grin so I might let him off. I'd far rather he won it than someone like John Terry, mind!

MintChocAddict · 15/12/2013 22:33

So maybe he should have tap danced round the pool with a clown nose on. Would that have done the trick?

rootypig · 15/12/2013 22:33

You didn't name the thread andy Murray, good sportsman, great tennis player, really nice man though did you?

Come on OP, own your thread a bit

Kewcumber · 15/12/2013 22:36

I think both your thread title and the OP were both slightly sneery what else was it supposed to mean? Confused

Heaven forbid we only produce sports personailiteis that are good with the media which is all you are talking about. You have no idea how much of a personality he has..

Kewcumber · 15/12/2013 22:37

I'd far rather he won it than someone like John Terry, mind! so not too much "personality" but not too little either.

Out of interest who did you vote for?

Wahtawah · 15/12/2013 22:38

He came across just fine to me. Did anyone catch the emotion in his voice or was it just me choking back my own tears?

pimplypoppet · 15/12/2013 22:40

Arrrggghh. This drives me bloody mad! Watch mock the week and programmes like a league of their own to see how bloody funny he can be. No he's not v funny on a tennis court...he's a professional sportsman but watch more of him before you slate him!! Rant over...for now...

TreaterAnita · 15/12/2013 22:42

YABU, I've always had a soft spot for Andy Murray. Remember that tennis players start very young and he's quite shy I think, but he's always struck me as having a really dry wit and he's let his guard down a lot as he's matured.

There are certainly many other 'personalities' in sport that I can think of who are louder, yes, but also far more objectionable.

Kewcumber · 15/12/2013 22:46

If personality were the test I think a WWF wrestler would win every year.

msmoss · 15/12/2013 22:47

YABU I really like him and think he has loads of personality, I get so annoyed with the amount of stick he gets (particularly about that football joke).

Kewcumber · 15/12/2013 22:48

you do realise OP that its a public vote?

AND he recognised a woman as being a great sportsperson, the greatest of all time, no gender caveats - the first thing out of him and clearly genuine - www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/sports-personality/25386015

YABVVVVVVVU

Kewcumber · 15/12/2013 23:00

rootypig - such a good point

CocktailQueen · 15/12/2013 23:04

It should really be renamed sports achievement of the year, I think. But yay to Andy Murray!! So pleased for a fellow scot ;) fab achievement and a lovely guy - shy, but with a dry sense of humour. Love him!

Salmotrutta · 15/12/2013 23:11

The problem with the satellite speech is its always stilted due to time delays.
PLUS someone shooed his team out in front of the camera too so that interrupted the flow a wee bit.

That's why the interview/speech was not not as smooth.

And YABVU OP!

neffi · 15/12/2013 23:18

He has shown amazing determination and hard work over many years, while under immense pressure from the press and an expecting public. He's completely dedicated to his sport. He's not a performing monkey and he doesn't get paid to make us laugh (although he can be very funny)

And in the last year he's reached his full potential and won two grand slams. Fully deserving of the recognition he's been shown tonight. Go Andy!

Kewcumber · 15/12/2013 23:19

And the Olympics - why does everyone forget the Olympics!

neffi · 15/12/2013 23:19

Expecting? D'oh! Expectant!

MrsMook · 15/12/2013 23:26

My friend met him last year after winning a competition to promote the family's sports charity. Apparently he's a lovely guy.

The documentary before Wimbledon showed a quietly determined young man. He's a much worthier winner than most of the Premiership players would be.

TyneTeas · 15/12/2013 23:56

This Guardian article from last year sums it up for me : )

TreaterAnita · 16/12/2013 01:16

I have just watched his acceptance speedh and yes, rootypig how unusual for any male player of any sport to suggest that a female is the greatest champion. Like him all the more now.

winkywinkola · 16/12/2013 07:49

He strikes me as very level headed, determined person. Just because he's not some effervescent chatterer doesn't mean he hasn't got personality.

He's amazing.

thegreylady · 16/12/2013 08:30

I thought he did all thT stuff in 2012 not 2013.

ShinyBlackNose · 16/12/2013 08:37

YABU. The poor man won Wimbledon, a massive achievement, he's won the USA Open, did pretty well in the Olympics, all because of his own drive, determination & ambition.

He's made some pretty amazing post match speeches.

He seems humble and genuine.

He's my favourite sportsman.

What do you want him to do to earn your approval? A song & dance in top hat & tails in his post match interviews?
