He's just won "personality of the year" why?? I know he won Wimbledon, but even so...

OP posts:
hobnobsaremyfavourite · 16/12/2013 08:39

Dear god I'd rather my children had Andy Murray as a role model than some of the self absorbed, prostitute using, celeb loving footballers.

throwingstones · 16/12/2013 08:45

Honestly, who really cares, what makes a good personality is subjective anyway, and perhaps Murray is just uncomfortable talking to the media, he's probably completely different with people he knows. He doesn't go around murdering kids or beating up women so what's the need to lay into him all the time?

I prefer to judge people by their actions rather than their words tbh.

valiumredhead · 16/12/2013 08:47

Yabu OP and very rude.

PacificDingbat · 16/12/2013 08:48

Yes, his big wins were in 2012, but I gather SPotY has just caught up with that sporting season Smile.

I think he does deserve Sports Personality (not just 'Person') of the Year - he seems to have a great personality, maybe not a 'fashionable' vacuous sleb stylee one, but I like him all the more for that.

LucyLasticKnickers · 16/12/2013 08:49

he absolutely deserved it, it would have been a travesty if he hadnt.

Eastwickwitch · 16/12/2013 08:51

Just I'm ready for the flaming…I agree. Dull as dishwater but a great PR team.

PacificDingbat · 16/12/2013 08:57

This BBC documentary made it quite clear that he is not dull in the least.
I do like him although I don't find him v fancyable, but surely that's neither here nor there Xmas Grin

ShinyBlackNose · 16/12/2013 08:57

You might find his public persona dull but you don't actually know Murray in RL. Maybe it's deliberately dull because he's not really interested in fame? Perhaps that is his PR team's real achievement.

Tiredemma · 16/12/2013 08:59

To be fair to him he did say in his speech last night that he was aware of his 'boring persona'.

I have really warmed to him over the past couple of years- he is clearly a very dedicated sportsman.

IThoughtThat · 16/12/2013 09:07

I really admire him and I love the way he doesn't try to fake a 'personality' for his marketing guys. I watch a lot of tennis and, unfortunately, he IS a bit moany and whiny in a lot of his post match interviews. However, I think he is only saying what the more media savvy players are thinking.
So I don't know if I mind.

So you are neither BU or NBU.

Ajaney · 16/12/2013 09:15

I have followed and supported Andy since I saw him play at Queens in 2005.

YABU

He is a worthy winner. Just watch the documentary 'The Man behind the raquet'. He is dedicated to improving and being the best player he can be.

limitedperiodonly · 16/12/2013 09:20

A few days ago I read a newspaper comment piece that said he was probably going to win but would be staying in Miami. There was this pathetic line like: 'Aww! Come on Andy. Don't be a spoilsport. Be there for us!'

Yeah, that's right, break your training, spend the best part of 24 hours travelling just so we can sit on our arses watching you in a BBC studio picking up a trophy that's less about your sport and more about your ability to grin and crack jokes, apparently.

I think he can crack jokes btw. He just chooses when to do it.

Beeyump · 16/12/2013 09:38

Yabu. Bizarre op.

Nancy66 · 16/12/2013 09:40

I am glad he won but I don't think it would have killed him to have accepted it in person. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion and I don't see why it couldn't have been worked into his schedule.

Other athletes, also in training, manage to make the effort.

It's this perceived surliness to his personality and disregard for the fans/public that holds me back from fully embracing him.

purits · 16/12/2013 09:58

I'm not keen on him. All I heard was him going on about not breaking training, how hard he has to work, etc. Where was his love of the sport, his shining enthusiasm, his inspiration to the next generation?
He makes it sound like a 9-5 drudge.

mrsjay · 16/12/2013 10:02

but his acceptance speech was funny though I saw it this morning , I lved it when he said I am really excited ,

snowed · 16/12/2013 10:04

YABU. He has the sort of personality that wins Wimbledon.

"Personality" doesn't have to be loud, glitzy, fake-smiling and comfortably banal in a showbizzy sort of way.

snowed · 16/12/2013 10:07

Where was his love of the sport, his shining enthusiasm

He's clearly an introvert, so these things are on the inside. Not everyone is extroverted and why should they be?

rootypig · 16/12/2013 10:10

Ha purits. Turns out it's Andy Murray's attitude that, y'know, wins tennis matches. And heaven forbid we reward hard work over media posturing Hmm

Loving all the armchair sports stars here.

Whistleblower0 · 16/12/2013 10:14

I like him. Love that he's not brash or a media whore like lots of other sports people , footballers especially, and what a bloody wonderful achievment to win Wimbledon.

stickysausages · 16/12/2013 10:15

YABVU so he's not a media puppet? He actually cares about his sport, his family & his girlfriend more.

purits · 16/12/2013 10:16

He couldn't even get out of the shower in time. His mum had to sub for him. Shows what he thinks of you, dear British Public.Hmm

stickysausages · 16/12/2013 10:17

His enthusiasm was in the tears he shed when he won Wimbledon.

He joked about his voice sounding boring last night, he's not a knob & always laughs at himself

stickysausages · 16/12/2013 10:18

I also think if people knew more about where he grew up & the shadow the town lives under etc, you'd see just how far he's come & how hard he's had to work

QueNoelle · 16/12/2013 10:20

YABU because 'personality' is a subjective thing.

I do think though, that the award is misnamed. What does it matter if somebody has what some people judge to be a good personality? They should be judged on their hard work, sportsmanship and achievements.

It should be called Sports Person of the Year.
