Should I report him?

Ok this is going to be a bit jumbled because I'm a bit [shocked] still but I need some advice.

I work in a public setting. There is one regular customer who happens to be outside friends with my boss also.

He drives a cab.

Today he saw me at the bus stop after work and offered to take me home. Initially I refused because I get the bus every day and it's no big deal plus I couldn't afford the cab fair for the journey and wasn't certain he was offering a free ride. He insisted saying he was heading my end of town, it was no trouble and would be free etc so I agreed.

He's a nice chatty guy. Quite a good friend of my boss and someone I've seen very regularly for almost a year now. Not some stranger. We have all socialised a couple of times in a big group too (just so you understand I felt safe etc)

So the journey was pleasant. We chatted, joked and made small talk just fine.

When he pulls up next to my house he says this "so, christmas must be expensive for single mums huh?" I agree it can be but I'm usually pretty organised and spread it over oct, nov, december so it's not such a shock. He then says "You could make yourself an extra £100 if you like? Ya know, if we pop in the house for a quickie....?"

WTF?

I laughed (nerves, shock - bloody hoping it was a terrible joke!). He said he was serious, that we were both single and I was attractive so he didn't mind....?

I told him my dignity was worth more the £100 and got out. He shouted "no offence, don't tell xxxx"

WTF do I do? Should I report to the cab firm? should I tell my boss?

What if she backs her long term friend and I lose my job?

He should be licensed by the local council.

You could always have a word with them.

ccsays · 05/12/2013 18:49

FFS, he did this to her precisely because he thought she was vulnerable, bellasue and that as a single mother struggling for cash, she would say yes. Hmm

AnnabelleLee · 05/12/2013 18:49

I don't think its illegal to offer someone money for sex. In fact I'm sure its not. Its creepy, sure, but its not a police matter.

OhHellNo · 05/12/2013 18:51

Thanks everyone for your help. I don't know if I can talk to anyone in Real life about this. I wouldn't know where to start really.

Gross! Report him and tell your boss. This guy is a taunt.

NewtRipley · 05/12/2013 18:53

The crime of Solicitation

ccsays · 05/12/2013 18:54

Yes, it is a crime.

Section 51A of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 (as inserted by section 19 of the Policing and Crime Act 2009) provides the offense of "soliciting".
51A Soliciting.
(1) It is an offence for a person in a street or public place to solicit another (B) for the purpose of obtaining B's sexual services as a prostitute.
(2) The reference to a person in a street or public place includes a person in a vehicle in a street or public place.
(3) A person guilty of an offence under this section is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.
(4) In this section “street” has the meaning given by section 1(4) of the Street Offences Act 1959.”

ccsays · 05/12/2013 18:55

I would phone 101 and say exactly what you've said here. You don't have to report if you don't want to, but the can at least give you advice.

AliceinWinterWonderland · 05/12/2013 18:56

It's soliciting prostitution, which is a crime. It's also damn creepy. Hmm

OhHellNo · 05/12/2013 18:57

I don't think it is illegal from what google says better wipe my history as that search looks bad!

Not sure if it's worth going to the police then? But ringing 101 wouldn't be wasting their time would it?

OP posts:
Retroformica · 05/12/2013 18:57

I wouldn't report it to your boss but I would his boss.

At work, the first couple if times you are him will be the worst bug then it will get easier.

LessMissAbs · 05/12/2013 18:57

I really think you should report him to the police for attempted kerb crawling. I bet he has done it before. He is quite possibly known to them and they need a witness. It might also be viewed as an attempted assault.

Oh and report him to the Licensing Board of your local authority too, which licenses taxi drivers. Again, he has almost certainly done it to others. It sounds like a practised scenario for him.

How awful! He sounds almost out of control.

OhHellNo · 05/12/2013 18:58

oh. cross posts. I should have read it more carefully then. Looks like it is.

The cab company and the licensing authority. It's nothing to do with your
job. It is something the Licensing authority need to know about.

CoconutRing · 05/12/2013 19:01

Tell the police. It's an offence. He should not have a taxi licence if he thinks it's ok to solicit a woman for sex. What if he gets a vulnerable woman in his cab who declines his advances but he refuses to take no for an answer?

Offering to pay for sex with a woman who is clearly not a sex-worker can often be an indicator of an individual whose behaviour can sometimes escalate to further offences.

Please report this man. You may save a woman being abused in the future. This is not the first time this man has propositioned a woman.

OhHellNo · 05/12/2013 19:03

Right.

I will ring 101 later to ask for advice.

I don't know if I will tell my boss. I don't know.

If I report it to his boss he may lose his job. Then he'd probably tell her anyway?

I don't know if it's best to just let it go. I don't want to make him some kind of enemy. I don't think I can deal with that.

OP posts:
LessMissAbs · 05/12/2013 19:03

Maybe it was just a cackhanded way of offering help? Maybe he thinks being a single parent is really financially crap?

Look, OP, I realise you are traumatised but you are being far too soft on him. The normal reaction would be anger, or extreme anger, on your part.

He might have sussed out the way you were likely to react, ie not do anything to complain about him. Confound the bastard. And remember other women might have suffered this too, or may do in the future if you do not act now.

And of course its a bloody crime worth being investigated by the police!

CosyTeaBags · 05/12/2013 19:04

You won't be wasting police time if you ring 101. They will thank you for it, and I'm sure they will be very reassuring.

And you don't have to take it any further than that, if you don't want to. But at least you will have had advice from a professional, and got it on record in case he does it again or has done it before.

Good luck

PeriodFeatures · 05/12/2013 19:04

Oh my gosh!! What a strange and stupid guy. Unless you felt threatened I personally would just find this incredibly embarrassing and sad.

I would perhaps make light of it to gauge your bosses reaction. Something like 'You'll never believe what happened to me the other night!' I might even mention to the boss that had he asked you on a date you would've said yes but now you don't even want to go near him.

He is clearly a man who pays for sex and has some strange attitudes towards women. (doesnt hold them in much esteem...or himself for that matter)

OhHellNo · 05/12/2013 19:05

Could I do it anonymously? I guess not?

He'd have a right to know what allegation was being set against him wouldn't he?

OP posts:
Caitlin17 · 05/12/2013 19:05

Annabelle Lee I'm pretty certain it is illegal to offer money for sex, soliciting is illegal. This isn't a discussion about the legality of prostitution but basically whilst it is legal just about every mechanism of how customer and supplier get together ( brothel, pimping and soliciting) isn't.

OhHellNo · 05/12/2013 19:06

Anyway, if he'd only ever approached me he'd know it was me wouldn't he?

I'm just thinking out loud. Not making much sense sorry!

OP posts:
Lilicat1013 · 05/12/2013 19:07

At the moment he is worried about you speaking to your boss about this and for that reason he might decide to get in first with an alternative version of what happen. He might say you came on to him and were offended when he turned you down which will then allow him to claim you made up of the offer of cash for sex out of spite.

I just wanted to consider that, for that reason it is definitely worth speaking to your boss as soon as you can.

birdybear · 05/12/2013 19:08

Pinus!
Ring 101. That is what that number is for.
