feminists

This is the first time I have started a thread, I lurk often and post sometimes.

I know that a lot of MNers are proud feminists and this is often mentioned in posts then followed with claims that femininity is anti feminist. For example make up and time that a woman spends on her appearance is a blow to feminism.

I strongly believe in equal rights for EVERYONE, regardless of gender, sexuality, age, race. My question to any feminists who are reading is do you feel that women need to be more like men in order to be equal, and if so does this not mean that the patriarchal views of past generations have simply been passed onto us. So you can be a successful woman, but only if you downplay your looks and gentler side.

Because to me that isn't really a victory at all, more of a surrender.

I'm with Doris Lessing on this one.

TheRaniOfYawn · 04/12/2013 18:26

I went to Greenham for my summer holidays one year when I was little. There were lots of ants, and campfire singalongs of You Can't Kill The Spirit. It was quite like guide camp, really. I can't remember whether we ate celery or not.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 04/12/2013 18:27

I think "not quite keen" makes you a wishy-washy pseudo-feminist agent of the patriarchy, but I'll have to look that up in Celery: A Feminist Perspective tomorrow.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 04/12/2013 18:28

I like celery. But I am from the Southern US. We put celery in everything. And onions and green peppers. We call these three the Holy Trinity.

MmeLindor · 04/12/2013 18:30

When I say 'not quite keen', I mean 'I would eat it in lasagne but not on its own'.

It might be the Stockholm Syndrome of vegetables though. I have been conditioned by the patriarchy to conceal my dislike of celery.

gordyslovesheep · 04/12/2013 18:31

yes Santas but I was 14 - I have a few pics of me looking moody outside the fence Grin

I used to stay at Vegan camp (was that Blue?) because when people donated chocolate they used to give it to us!

2Tinsellytocare · 04/12/2013 18:34

I can't stand celery

SantasLittleLineRunner · 04/12/2013 18:40

LineRunner · 04/12/2013 18:54

It would be good to put together a 'scrapbook' of photos on MN one day of Greenham.

MistAllChuckingFrighty · 04/12/2013 18:55

What does (did) Doris Lessing say about this. I have to know.

VerySmallSqueak · 04/12/2013 19:14

I lived at Greenham for a time.

Celery was eaten.

Blue had a lot of vegans.

LineRunner I would love to see your photos of camp.I never took many - had no camera.

SteppedOnaFrog · 04/12/2013 19:22

Doris Lessing said she had never met a woman who wasn't a feminist.

MistAllChuckingFrighty · 04/12/2013 19:26

Did she ? Gosh, not sure I agree with that.

MistAllChuckingFrighty · 04/12/2013 19:27

Sorry, I meant that isn't my experience.

LineRunner · 04/12/2013 19:30

I guess Doris Lessing was never on MN.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 04/12/2013 19:30

US feminism 101 states to not assume patricial intentions unless told to do so.

Or something like that.

LineRunner · 04/12/2013 19:32

Sweet, Tee Grin
