to want to bring back The Swiss Centre in Leicester Square?

Anyone who is now if their 40s will remember the amazing Swiss Ctr in Leicester Square which shut its door back in 2008, I think (Westminster Council apparently didn't think it offered the public enough...more like the land it was sitting on was worth an epic fortune).
It had the best food court down in the basement, with all manner of Swiss foodie stuff, cooked individually for you from several little stalls, and the quality was amazing: Rosti, Movenpick ice-cream,bratwurst....mmm.
I spent bloody hours in the place, sharing a plate of food with mates (we were all students back then) and it was the best meeting point too ("Meet you outside the swiss centre at 8"
Iconic.
G'won, indulge me peeps!

I remember going when I was little.
It was a really big deal as my father is Swiss, and it felt very special to be there.
I vaguely remember having fondue there, and trying delicious chocolate truffles.
I had no idea that it had gone, I always imagined it would always be a permanent fixture :(

bongobaby · 28/11/2013 12:52

I have fond memories of the Swiss centre from when I was 4 years old. Yep they should bring it back.

Scholes34 · 28/11/2013 13:27

The bells are still there, but not the food and chocolate, alas.

HawtChocolate · 28/11/2013 13:30

Never went inside but remember the cuckoo clock outside. My grandad used to always visit for steak tartare when he came to London. Didnt even know it was gone, as hardly ever venture down to Leicester Sq these days.

DancingLady · 28/11/2013 13:32

I'm in my 30s, I remember it! Never went in, but the cuckoo clock was a great place to arrange to meet friends. And SC was about 1,000,000 times better than M&M World, which is what replaced it...

hermioneweasley · 28/11/2013 13:34

I didn't realise it had closed! Yes, def bring it back

FoxMulder · 28/11/2013 13:36

Oh, I remember this (I'm 30). I remember it being quite magical and a massive treat to go there when we were down in London.

Lonecatwithkitten · 28/11/2013 13:36

I loved the Swiss centre cinema big screens, but with only about 20 people watching.

Lilymaid · 28/11/2013 13:39

I used to go in there when shopping - the chocolate truffle torte was to die for. There were a variety of restaurants - we only ever went to the cheaper one (with seats, not the Imbiss) but quality was excellent.

mimbleandlittlemy · 28/11/2013 13:47

YANBU. Isn't it now M&M world and full of people dressed as M&Ms Shock which is both scary and unnatural?!

bolderdash · 28/11/2013 13:48

The food court was the best. I loved going there. What a shame it's gone.

Helpyourself · 28/11/2013 13:49

It's gone Shock

womma · 28/11/2013 13:49

I never went when it was open, but I want to go now! If I'd known there was a food court I'd have been in there like a flash. Yes, can we have it back please?

loveinthemist · 28/11/2013 13:52

Oh I used to love to visit it when I was student in London in the 80's. Didn't realise it had gone. Glad you mentioned it as I was about to send my DH along for some info as we're visiting Switzerland for first time this summer. V excited!

Sad it's gone. I loved it too.

OberonTheHopeful · 28/11/2013 14:06

I was thinking the same thing a few weeks ago when walking past. I often to used to meet friends there.

alranson · 28/11/2013 21:07

YES! The fondue!!! But the place you could get fondue was terribly expensive.

Also very handy for buying Swiss Cards for half price public transport. The saving on Adelboden-Jungfraujoch alone was worth the trip.

caramelwaffle · 28/11/2013 21:20

I can taste the cheese fondue even now. Lovely.

I regret not going more.

LongStripedScarfWearer · 28/11/2013 21:21

YANBU, the cinema was fab!

caramelwaffle · 28/11/2013 21:22

Leicester Square, Oxford Street and the Kings Road used to be the places for a London teenager to hang out.
