to want to bring back The Swiss Centre in Leicester Square?

Anyone who is now if their 40s will remember the amazing Swiss Ctr in Leicester Square which shut its door back in 2008, I think (Westminster Council apparently didn't think it offered the public enough...more like the land it was sitting on was worth an epic fortune).
It had the best food court down in the basement, with all manner of Swiss foodie stuff, cooked individually for you from several little stalls, and the quality was amazing: Rosti, Movenpick ice-cream,bratwurst....mmm.
I spent bloody hours in the place, sharing a plate of food with mates (we were all students back then) and it was the best meeting point too ("Meet you outside the swiss centre at 8"
Iconic.
G'won, indulge me peeps!

I walked past it to work every day for 6 years and I thought it was a watch and clocks shop. Doh!! Now I find out what it really had.

Beastofburden · 28/11/2013 21:24

Never went in but loved the penknife Red Cross logo thingy

aliciaflorrick · 28/11/2013 21:29

It's gone! That used to be my favourite place in London. Has the clock gone too?

BlackbeltinBS · 28/11/2013 21:35

Clock and the cantons sign still there in middle of the pedestrian street. Rest demolished.

I used to go to Leicester Sq fairly often, had DD and stopped going at all as in baby bubble which did not include West End. Went back about a year later and had a real WTF? moment, couldn't believe it had gone.

KittyVonCatsington · 28/11/2013 21:37

I am early 30s and I remember my grandmother taking me there to see the moving clock outside, numerous times. Didn't realise it had closed. So sad!

ifyouwish · 28/11/2013 21:39

Ohhhh.....Hmm I used to go there every other weekend with my dad. Very found memories, I used to love the smells in there, and all the little tasters. Didn't realise it's gone, I was going to take dh there the next time we go to visit family.

ifyouwish · 28/11/2013 21:39

Fond! Smile

Faverolles · 28/11/2013 21:41

The penknife Red Cross logo thingy is the Swiss flag :o

Shocked to see it gone last summer. They sold wonderful cheesecakes by the slice when I was a student doing bar work in the late 80s - my weekly treat!

Allalonenow · 28/11/2013 21:45

Just recently the glockenspiel has been resited in Leicester Square, so still a tiny bit of Switzerland to visit with children.

AthelstaneTheUnreadyFucker · 28/11/2013 21:49

Gone! Shock

Can't be 2008, surely... surely... it was open for a while after that?

MummyPigsFatTummy · 28/11/2013 21:50

I only discovered it had gone when DD and I went to theatre with friends and they suggested going to M&M world afterwards for the children. I was gutted when I discovered that it has replaced the Swiss Centre. And seriously, M&M World is the eighth circle of Hell. Rammed full of tourists all buying hugely overpriced crap. And the sweets! I let DD get some from the machines they have there and for a small bag I nearly had to re-mortgage the house (not that I am an expert on sweet prices these days). It is a travesty.

Rosa · 28/11/2013 21:51

It was where we went when we went to the theatre or a trip to London...it had its own sort of deli smell ...great place . Whats there now MacDondalds???

MrsDoomsPatterson · 28/11/2013 21:53

What? It's gone? Oh that's sad.

Meglet · 28/11/2013 21:55

I didn't know normal people could go in there. I assumed it was a kind of embassy, national airline HQ. .

I'm only going to M&M world if they sell peanut butter M&M's.

greenhill · 28/11/2013 22:08

2008 you say, I really am out of the loop Grin

SatinSandals · 28/11/2013 22:16

I didn't know it had gone! It was great-I remember very good soup.

NigellasGuest · 28/11/2013 22:18

i'm in my late 40's. Went there in the 80's. It always felt a bit weird and pointless somehow....

Teladi · 28/11/2013 22:19

Me either Meglet! I can't believe I could have had lovely food in there while I was living in London and I didn't even know. :(

I never actually went in! I did notice recently it's no longer there.

I remember knowing where I could get Movenpick ice-cream if I wanted it, but I never did.

One day my DC will veiw the M&M shop in the same way.

valiumredhead · 28/11/2013 22:21

We used to eat they all the time before going to see a film. I'd forgotten all about it!
