to think immigrants should work before being entitled to benefits?

judgejudithjudy · 27/11/2013 16:50

EU immigrants will only be allowed to claim benefits 12 weeks after entering the UK but surely EU immigrants should only be entering the UK to work - not claim? I can understand if they enter the country to work & then lose their jobs - more than entitled to benefits but surely you should pay into the system first?

ready to be flamed so wearing my flame coated coat :-)

Sorry , I meant late 1800's not 18th C. so 30.5 million

Redlondonbus

Apologies for missing your earlier questions. But I really don't think I'm popular enough to have people flocking to see me Grin. If only!

I reacted badly to you because you were the third person to have a go at me, despite me a) participating in the discussion throughout and b) not being the only person to disagree with the OP (and other posters).

And the other two people who had a go had done just that and contributed nothing else to the discussion.

It wasn't just the torygraph that Reported the 17% increase, is the bbc also not reputable?

JanineStHubbins · 27/11/2013 19:07

So what's your point, moogy? That Asian immigration to Britain has increased since the late 1800s? No shit. There are historic reasons for that.

I posted this upthread: In any case, given how the British state exploited, brutalised and profited off most of the Asian sub-continent for about 200 years, I reckon that Asian immigrants in Britain have some way to go before it's balanced out.

JanineStHubbins · 27/11/2013 19:08

Justanotherlurker my issue with that report isn't the Torygraph, it's the source of the report.

YouTheCat · 27/11/2013 19:10

Indeed, Janine.

Hahaha at 'is the bbc also not reputable' - no

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 19:10

The report also said this:

*"The most glaring problem is that NHS trusts translate their own material rather than have access to a central pool of translated documents."

The organisation suggested using free internet translation software and easier to understand English rather than medical jargon."*

So the problem lies with resources not being used correctly, rather than immigrants being a problem. It also cites 'documents' being translated and medical jargon being a problem.

It also doesn't mention EU immigrants anywhere, so what's the relevance?

mumToOne33 · 27/11/2013 19:11

Op yanbu. There has to be some sort of rule, otherwise why not just abolish tax and benefits and make it a free for all? (I'm not suggesting this, just saying there needs to be rules on tax and benefits otherwise everyone would claim and no one would pay tax).

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 19:12

There are rules on tax and benefits!

Which is why some people can claim and some people can't.

Jesus wept...

YouTheCat · 27/11/2013 19:12

There is a rule, from the EU and it covers all of the EU countries.

judgejudithjudy · 27/11/2013 19:15

fgs heart - THATS WHAT IS ON THE NEWS TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
ophelia275 · 27/11/2013 19:15

The whole system should be reformed so that benefits are paid based on past contributions which should apply to immigrants and British citizens and benefits should be time limited like in most other countries, so one cannot make living on benefits a lifestyle choice. The system at the moment where people can just claim is ridiculous and economically unsustainable.

YouTheCat · 27/11/2013 19:18

So what about those young people who are struggling to find work? Should they just live on fresh air? Or those people who have had low paid jobs that means they haven't paid tax?

This so called benefits lifestyle is really not the case. There are very very few people who actually choose to be long term unemployed.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 19:20

I know that! I'm not disputing that.

My point is, if you bring up immigrants and benefits, then people are automatically going to compare with British-born and benefits. You can't then blinker yourself and say 'no, that's got nothing to do with it' because it is relevant.

As someone said, I'm not the thread police, but neither are you and you can't decide what other areas your topic of discussion throws up are off-limits in case it makes your case invalid.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 19:21

Sorry Cat - that obviously wasn't aimed at you, but at OP Grin

I know you and I are pretty much on the same page - how's your bingo card going on this thread?

YouTheCat · 27/11/2013 19:22

I have a line and 4 corners. Grin

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 19:23

And actually Ophelia - what about someone like me?

I split with my ex earlier this year. I haven't worked in almost 9 years due to the kids (and other things). By your reckoning, I wouldn't be entitled to anything because I haven't paid in for awhile. How would I feed my kids in that case?

It's not that cut and dried. Every case is different.

NearTheWindmill · 27/11/2013 19:25

I think what is on offer to others coming her from the EU should be proportionate with what is offered in other parts of the UK. Many other EU countries did not open their doors to the extent that we did when other countries previously joined. However as a nation we have an indigenous population that expects to receive benefits instead of doing what are considered "dirty" jobs. Immigrants have always come to the UK to do the jobs the locals are not prepared to do. If the locals did them; there wouldn't be jobs and there wouldn't be an incentive to come.

All a bit sad really.

HappyMummyOfOne · 27/11/2013 19:27

Immigrants mostly have a high work ethic and will do jobs that people born here wont do as they dont want to work or net more not.

Contributions based would be far better regardless of born in the uk or not. Our teen pregnancy rate would soon drop when they realise they wont have money thrown at them and perhaps those who have every excuse not to work ( i cant work as have children etc) would have to start thinking about how they fund their life choices.

Justanotherlurker · 27/11/2013 19:32

Heartbroken

I didn't say there was a problem, I am not here to argue or anything just that from what I can see moogy was correct with their figures which got shouted down, as they are from an foi request

This has probably moved on since so might slink away again

gordyslovesheep · 27/11/2013 19:37

no the point with the figures is that they are being used in a slightly smokey screeny way - it is the figure individual NHS trust CHOOSE to spend on translating literature - it's not face to face interpretation

it doesn't say how much of those costs are for the actual translation and how much for the printing and production of leaflets - however if people are paying taxes to fund the NHS as many many immigrants do maybe they should have equal access to services?

and many of those language will not be EU so it's not totally relevant

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 19:39

Gordy says it better than I ever could Grin

gordyslovesheep · 27/11/2013 19:45

also see this

judgejudithjudy · 27/11/2013 19:47

erm, if immigrants cant speak english how do they work in the UK?

OP posts:
Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 19:49

Who said they can't speak English? Confused

And a lot of immigrants speak two or three languages, including English. Compared to us, that's not bad going at all.
