to think immigrants should work before being entitled to benefits?

EU immigrants will only be allowed to claim benefits 12 weeks after entering the UK but surely EU immigrants should only be entering the UK to work - not claim? I can understand if they enter the country to work & then lose their jobs - more than entitled to benefits but surely you should pay into the system first?

ready to be flamed so wearing my flame coated coat :-)

What has changed is that there are more mechanisms in place to measure this and to support those children.
No, what has changed is that there are far more immigrants than there were 20 years ago.
And yes, I'm talking about changes in society in the last 20 years . Coincidentally since immigration started to rocket....

gordyslovesheep · 27/11/2013 18:15

My step father was able to claim unemployment benefit of just over 1000 euros a month after working and paying tax in Spain for over 2 years

Most unemployment benefit in the EU is contribution based and pays a percentage of your last salary for a limited time

CiderBomb · 27/11/2013 18:16

I agree with the OP and I also don't think immigrants should be entitled to social housing until they've lived here for at least five years.

This is not racist, it's about looking after your own in tough times. It angers me that people I know can't get a council house or flat but the council are happily giving them out to people from other counties. How is that right?

I wouldn't go and live in another country and expect them to house me or give me benefits.

Times are hard for everyone at the moment and I can't totally understand why it is a hot topic of discussion.

gordyslovesheep · 27/11/2013 18:16

did I dream the massive immigrant population of places such as Liverpool that dates back to the 1500's ?

JanineStHubbins · 27/11/2013 18:18

Or London throughout its history? But moogy seems to think this all started in 1993...

YouTheCat · 27/11/2013 18:18

No Gordy you didn't dream it.

Misspixietrix · 27/11/2013 18:19

Benefit Immigrants?! That's a new one! Was that on your Bingo Card HearrbrokenMum73? Grin Maybe focus your energies on the huge corporate companies who come over here and fleece the country by not having to pay a penny's tax on an £84bn sale OP. THAT'S where we are losing money. (Amongst other things) Just Saying.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 18:19

And one might ask why are you so keen to shut down discussion?

Wow, I'm just so easy to jump on, aren't I?

Do you know what? I would quite happily like to see this 'debate' deleted and have reported it, right from the very first post.

Threads like this are never started as genuine discussion. If that were the case, the OP wouldn't be so fixated on immigrants. Why not just discuss people in general who haven't contributed? Why single out immigrants. Yes, I call racism - seen enough of it on this site to know it without thinking twice now, tbh. The last thread like this was just the same.

Interesting (again) how I have taken part in the discussion throughout, yet people are quick to have a go at me for not contributing Hmm

YouTheCat · 27/11/2013 18:20

Can I call bigotry then, as racism is already taken? Grin

moogy1a · 27/11/2013 18:20

No, You didn't dream the immigration dating back 100's of years. What you might be getting confused about is the miniscule level it was at compared to today.

Misspixietrix · 27/11/2013 18:21

"Happily giving them out to people not from this Country". No. No they are not.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 18:21

it's about looking after your own in tough times. It angers me that people I know can't get a council house or flat but the council are happily giving them out to people from other counties. How is that right?

Oh god! House! I win! Best game of immigrant bingo ever

inkyfingers · 27/11/2013 18:21

Oh the 1500s, that would be before benefits, and lots of space for people.

eofa1 · 27/11/2013 18:21

Hear hear, heartbroken,

Bowlersarm · 27/11/2013 18:21

Immigration has been the lead news item all day heartbroken therefore not unreasonable for the OP to start a discussion about it.

Misspixietrix · 27/11/2013 18:22

YouTheCat no you can't. You can't just pull out the Bigotry Card whenever you please you know?! Grin

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 18:23

I get that Bowlers but I've asked (two or three times now) how the OP feels about people who were born here claiming benefits without ever having worked and I have yet to get a response to that.

Funny, that.

gordyslovesheep · 27/11/2013 18:23

where as now we are tripping over all these forin types Hmm

maybe no one should be entitled to anything without having worked?

I mean where do you stop - people who come here legally actually looking for work are penalised but British born people who don't want to work don't.

Personally I think our benefit system is fine as it is and Immigration is not a bad thing

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 27/11/2013 18:24

Ok new rules - do not debate anything in the news.

Do not debate anything regarding immigration.

Better?

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 18:24

Can I play my xenophobic card? I just love the asthetic sound of the word, even though the meaning is disgusting.

RedLondonBus · 27/11/2013 18:24

So where will they live in the first 3 months?

And how will they survive? Eat?

YouTheCat · 27/11/2013 18:24

Damn Grin

No, You didn't dream the immigration dating back 100's of years. What you might be getting confused about is the miniscule level it was at compared to today.

Actually, as a percentage of population it was around about the same.

mirry2 · 27/11/2013 18:25

I agree with woowoo owl

Misspixietrix · 27/11/2013 18:25
