to think immigrants should work before being entitled to benefits?

EU immigrants will only be allowed to claim benefits 12 weeks after entering the UK but surely EU immigrants should only be entering the UK to work - not claim? I can understand if they enter the country to work & then lose their jobs - more than entitled to benefits but surely you should pay into the system first?

ready to be flamed so wearing my flame coated coat :-)

By the mid-19th century, there were at least 40,000 Indian seamen, diplomats, scholars, soldiers, officials, tourists, businessmen and students in Great Britain.

compared with today

The total number of Asians in UK is about 2,084,000

Would you like me to find the figures for all the other nationalities?

Bowlersarm · 27/11/2013 18:26

Are there many English immigrants on the German dole?

Misspixietrix · 27/11/2013 18:28

Yes it was in The Mirror only a few weeks ago. Can't link as on the phone.

YouTheCat · 27/11/2013 18:28

And how many British people were there then? Not as many as now?

I said as a percentage of the population.

Omg over 2million Asians! How will we cope? Hmm

gordyslovesheep · 27/11/2013 18:29

how many indigenous people where there in the mid 19th century?

I'm not at all confused - I am aware that we are a nation of immigrants, I am the daughter of one ...

JanineStHubbins · 27/11/2013 18:29

Jees, moogy, there is so much historical insensitivity and ignorance in the rather bald statistics that you're quoting, I don't even know where to start.

judgejudithjudy · 27/11/2013 18:29

oh deary me - i brought it up as its all ive heard on the news this afternoon..... & immigrants help this country - im talking about immigrants that are benefit tourists - how on earth is that racist? we already pay out more benefits than we should.

gordyslovesheep · 27/11/2013 18:30

Asians doesn't equal immigrants either - most of those will be second and third generation BRITISH

moogy1a · 27/11/2013 18:30

Population in late 18th C was roughly 35 million. About half of present.

2 million is a leetle bit more than 40,000

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 18:30

Can you tell us where you got your stats from please Moogy

Oh, and you still owe me stats from earlier about the vast numbers of interpreters!

judgejudithjudy · 27/11/2013 18:31

i dont give a rats behind how many immigrants there are, just whether working or not?! & if UK residents are moving to Germany to sponge, then shame on them.

Misspixietrix · 27/11/2013 18:32

OP if you knew the Rigmoral of having to apply for a NI number before a Jobcentre or an Employer for that matter would even entertain you. You would know there is no such thing as Benefit Tourists.

gordyslovesheep · 27/11/2013 18:32

yes but those 2 million aren't ALL immigrants Hmm

moogy1a · 27/11/2013 18:34

£23 million a year on interpretors for the NHS last year. up by 17 % since 2007

BrianTheMole · 27/11/2013 18:34

But thanks for engaging with the discussion - you've given some excellent points to do with the subject. Oh, no, you haven't.

Oh you're too funny. Seeing as your excellent response to the debate was the second post on the thread. Grin

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 18:35

Sources, please?

Misspixietrix · 27/11/2013 18:35

Yes they are gordylovessheep. Stop confusing the issue with facts! Grin.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 18:36

Hold on, Moogy are you seriously just quoting the fucking Telegraph???

Why don't you just quote the Mail - I'd take that just as seriously!

JanineStHubbins · 27/11/2013 18:36

In any case, given how the British state exploited, brutalised and profited off most of the Asian sub-continent for about 200 years, I reckon that Asian immigrants in Britain have some way to go before it's balanced out.

judgejudithjudy · 27/11/2013 18:38

money would be better spent on english lessons.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 27/11/2013 18:38

Ahahahaha! Brilliant! As I suspected!

Any chance of you doing some actual research rather than just copying and pasting the first 'newspaper' link you stumble across?

Can't take you seriously until you do that.

Government stats, maybe? Or something, y'know, credible?

Misspixietrix · 27/11/2013 18:38

HeartbrokenMum73 I'm still waiting for Mensch to tweet where she got her Crime Stats from. .

moogy1a · 27/11/2013 18:39

Who would you quote if not a respected paper quoting facts supplied by the /nhS itself? or do you think they make these numbers up?

JanineStHubbins · 27/11/2013 18:39

Oh dear moogy. Have you bothered to check where that story came from? An 'independent' think tank, whose patrons are all in the House of Lords, and who agitates for the complete privatisation of the NHS.
