NC (not for this) but I'm long-standing MNer (Pom bear, naice ham...)

This might ruin the whole concept of AIBU but sometimes people pop up with opinions that I am shocked by, not because of what they are but just because they are so marginal. (SPs Cliff Richard obsession, for example?)

So, whilst encouraging you all to go forth and spread your weird and wonderful thoughts all over AIBU and elsewhere, what really unpopular opinions do you hold?

I have a couple of corkers, first one is that Kanye West however much of a knob he is actually is a genius.

Totally agree re: long hours and bringing work home, Arabesque1. Though I would also add that it might be a sign that your boss is a cunt and Western capitalism has brought about some really shitty ideas of how a person's worth is measured.

cantheyseeme · 21/11/2013 14:44

People who are not willing to do anything for themselves should get no help. I.e people who whinge and bitch about going on employment schemes should be told if you dont make a REAL effort you will lose it all.
Also being made to "work for dole money" is NOT slave labour.... slaves werent paid and didnt have their whole rent paid for them Hmm

Arabesque1 · 21/11/2013 14:44

True Profundo. I know people who have worked in places where everyone is afraid to be seen as the first one to go home in the evening, so you have ridiculous situations of people hanging around til 7 or 8 o'clock for no particular reason except to be not-the-first-to-leave-the-office.
They also tend to be the places where going to the pub on Friday is compulsory and no one can leave before the boss.

'And yet, astonishingly, their children usually seem to do very well academically, at least as well as similar children in the state sector who are being taught by paid professionals'

Quite but perhaps these children are taught by intelligent people capable of fulfilling the teaching role and not egomaniacs who think having a child qualifies them to educate a child.

cantheyseeme · 21/11/2013 14:48

We should have private healthcare instead of the NHS.

monicalewinski · 21/11/2013 14:52

Most children 5+ are perfectly fine playing out without a parent hovering all the time.

Most children that are 8+ are perfectly capable of getting themselves to/from school on their own.

Most children 11+ are sensible enough to be left for short periods on their own at home (eg before/after school).

Too many people molly coddle their children nowadays.

TheBigJessie · 21/11/2013 14:52

50shadesofmeh precisely.Between us, my husband and I could if necessary, teach some subjects perfectly well, in terms of content up to GCSE and A-level. The ones we have or will have degrees in. The ones we have A-levels in at a push. Getting children entered as private candidates to certify that is a very different kettle of fish.

The bits that all children should have a chance to try, that we were shit at, just because we're parents? No way. Experienced it, wouldn't inflict it on a child I hated, never mind my own.

50shadesofmeh · 21/11/2013 14:58

Exactly TheBigJessie it's case of know your limitations and don't make your own intelligence your child's only benchmark .

silverten · 21/11/2013 15:00

Mobile phones should not be permitted to be operated with speakers on public transport.

Your RnB is shit enough as it is without being piped through those crappy little tinny things. And NO ONE else wants to hear it.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 21/11/2013 15:03

Leggings should not be worn as trousers. Meaning, with short tops.

Especially when the leggings are stretched to see through.

PippaMiddleton · 21/11/2013 15:06

I think Samantha Cameron has terrible dress sense. I keep seeing people saying how stylish she is, but I just don't see it.

I think most of her outfits are too try hard and just don't suit her, which is quite an achievement considering that she has such a lovely figure.

VerySmallSqueak · 21/11/2013 15:07

People who make huge profits on the sale of their houses (ie those who buy their house for £100,000 and sell it 2 years later for £175,000) should,(once improvements they have done and paid for themselves have been taken into account) be made to give a certain % to build affordable social housing.

Im not a big fan of the City of York.

Born and bred there, moved away 18 months ago. Will never move back.

There's nothing wrong with it (well most of it), but its not all that great that people seem to think.

minipie · 21/11/2013 15:12

Ooh I have plenty

Inheritance tax should be 100%

Babies and toddlers are boring after 20 minutes

Waxing is insane

We should do away with presents (I'm with Sheldon Cooper on this)

Fewer people should go to university

catsareevilshits · 21/11/2013 15:13

I dislike cats and would be happy to see an ban on them wandering freely, shitting in my garden and killing the native wildlife. Housecats are fine.

This. Anyone who says "I don't understand cat haters", THIS. All you cat owners who let your furry little fuckers roam around the neighbourhood, shitting in people's gardens and slaughtering our lovely native wildlife, you are all selfish, anti-social buggers and I hate you.

ohtanmybum · 21/11/2013 15:14

Monica I thought you were a lost cause - Clarkson and Mark Thatcher's Mummy Shock, but I agree with you totally about Molly coddling her children, much tastier than coddled eggs.

MollyHooper · 21/11/2013 15:15

In my experience, women who criticize those who are plus size are usually insecure about how their face looks and have convinced themselves that thin equals attractive.

I would leave my husband for Benedict Cumberbatch, he's aware of this.

I find attitudes towards school attendance bizarre.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 21/11/2013 15:18

I think gin is vile. It tastes like something you should use to unblock drains.

I'm pretty sure mayonnaise is not actually a condiment. It wouldn't surprise me if it was actually produced as a student prank when someone combined snot and spunk.

I judge people who vote Tory, and who don't like dogs or football. Not that I think there is anything wrong with them, just that we could never be friends.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 21/11/2013 15:19

Buying your home should not be "the right thing to do"

What's wrong with renting? Plenty of other countries dont think that getting (and staying) on the housing ladder is the be all and end all.

MollyHooper · 21/11/2013 15:19

Awh come on catsareevil...

They are lovely and you have upset them.

ohtanmybum · 21/11/2013 15:19

Molly - Who would your husband leave you for? (Just curious)

monicalewinski · 21/11/2013 15:19

ohtan Grin

I am googling coddled eggs now (I have no idea what they are, even though I've heard of them before)
