WIBU to buy new purse after checkout person licked my card?

BakeOLiteGirl · 19/11/2013 09:02

I have an absolute hatred of spit. When I see people spit I actually start heaving.

Just now I bought something in a supermarket which has a loyalty point scheme. It's a small Co Op branch in my local area.

My loyalty card wouldn't work so the man licked the whole back of the card. Then handed it back to me. I was trying not to be sick and put the card back in my purse.

Now my purse is poisoned. I have a spit purse. I feel sick looking at my poison purse.

Am I over reacting about my spit card and mucky purse?

I didn't want to complain because it's all a bit local and I don't want to get a nice, helpful person into trouble.

But lick my card? That's too much store loyalty for me.

I have to work now but I feel sick. I'm so spit phobic. Perhaps I need a grip for Christmas.

That is actually disgusting. I'm not bothered about checkout operators licking their fingers to separate carrier bags or anything like that. But licking the whole of your card and then handing it to you? Yuck.

TotallyAddictedToLurking · 19/11/2013 09:05

That is disgusting, YANBU!!!

Why would someone do that?!?

Featherbag · 19/11/2013 09:05

Ew, that is disgusting!!! If you really can't bring yourself to complain (which I think you should, seriously, ew!) I think yes, you'll have to buy a new purse!

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2013 09:05

That's really weird.

Are you sure he didn't wet his fingers and rub them across it?

Still gross, but not nearly as weird as licking the whole back of it Confused

ditavonteesed · 19/11/2013 09:06

you do not need a grip that is revolting.

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 19/11/2013 09:06

Shock He licked your card? Did he ask you first?

I think you're overreacting with your whole 'poison purse' thing but the licking is definitely a tad gross.

WillieWaggledagger · 19/11/2013 09:07

yuck. disgusting from your POV but also from his - he doesn't know where your card's been either!

BakeOLiteGirl · 19/11/2013 09:07

I'm so glad I'm NU then. And yes, it was a proper full on tongue lick. Never seen anything like it before.

Fakebook · 19/11/2013 09:08

Eeeew. That is just revolting. Yanbu. I'd get a new card too. Why the hell couldn't he have rubbed it on his knee or something like normal people? Confused.

WillieWaggledagger · 19/11/2013 09:08

a new purse is going too far tbh, but yes, the licking is horrible

curlew · 19/11/2013 09:09

There's a thread somewhere about the best purse to buy with a budget of £250........ [helpful emoticon]

Dobbiesmum · 19/11/2013 09:12

I've seen a member of staff breath on the card and wipe it on their sleeve to get it to swipe before but definitely not licking. That's just very strange... And slightly gross.
I would get a new purse if spit makes you feel bad, you'll think about it every time you take money out of it.

That is disgusting but you are kidding yourself if you think your purse isn't already poisoned!

Do you know how many poo, stomach bugs and spit germs are on money and chip and pin machines?

mitchsta · 19/11/2013 09:14

I know you said it's all a bit local, but I would definitely be making a complaint about Card Licker. That's just wrong. Really disgusting. I don't think I'd bother buying a new purse I wouldn't have put the card back in it anyway but I would throw the card away. No loyalty points scheme is worth that.

Stropzilla · 19/11/2013 09:14

Oh god that's disgusting! I think I may have given him a grossed out look and told him to keep the card! I don't even have a thing about spit. Treat yourself to a lovely new purse.

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 19/11/2013 09:15

That is disgusting. Shock

In my local supermarket, they have these wet sponge things they touch to separate bags.

A full on tongue lick? Confused

WireCat · 19/11/2013 09:17

Oh my god. I'd never have taken the card back. In fact I may have just walked out. Without my purchases.
That is quite bizarre.

And vile.

CosyTeaBags · 19/11/2013 09:26

Could you just clean your purse with some anti-septic wet wipes, give it a really thorough scrub? Would that make you feel a bit better about the contamination?

I, too, think it's disgusting and you ought to complain. Could you perhaps make an anonymous comment, worded in a helpful non-confrontational way such as "I just wanted to make you aware that this happened. The member of staff is usually very good and I don't want to cause any trouble for him, but perhaps you should make your staff aware that this is not acceptable behaviour"

Bigbrassband · 19/11/2013 09:28

Anti bacterial gel on the card and purse! Who licks a card, that's seriously revolting!

HeadfirstThroughTheTimeVortex · 19/11/2013 09:32

I wouldn't, couldn't have accepted the card back off him after that. I'd have asked for a new card! Ewwww. If the cashier is normally good and helpful then do what Cosy suggested.

Objection · 19/11/2013 10:03

Bahahahaha!

He licked your card? That's hilarious! What a nutter!

Writerwannabe83 · 19/11/2013 10:38

Even just reading your thread title made me feel sick....

Totally disgusting!!

ControlGeek · 19/11/2013 10:40

Crikey! I'd be buying a new purse and telling co-op I needed a replacement card.

I'm another spit hater. As a child someone spat on my (cloth) pencil case and even though my mum bleached it I still insisted on throwing it away and getting a new one.

CinnabarRed · 19/11/2013 10:41

But the important point is: did his licking make your card start working?
