WIBU to buy new purse after checkout person licked my card?

BakeOLiteGirl · 19/11/2013 09:02

I have an absolute hatred of spit. When I see people spit I actually start heaving.

Just now I bought something in a supermarket which has a loyalty point scheme. It's a small Co Op branch in my local area.

My loyalty card wouldn't work so the man licked the whole back of the card. Then handed it back to me. I was trying not to be sick and put the card back in my purse.

Now my purse is poisoned. I have a spit purse. I feel sick looking at my poison purse.

Am I over reacting about my spit card and mucky purse?

I didn't want to complain because it's all a bit local and I don't want to get a nice, helpful person into trouble.

But lick my card? That's too much store loyalty for me.

I have to work now but I feel sick. I'm so spit phobic. Perhaps I need a grip for Christmas.

He's got maglick!

SomethingOnce · 19/11/2013 10:42

Ewww.

But YABU for having put it back in your purse.

SparklyFucker · 19/11/2013 10:46

That is revolting! I have honestly asked him to call the manager over immediately and I'd have complained vigorously. It is absolutely, utterly, disgusting. I wouldn't buy a new purse but I would certainly have been asking for a substantial discount or money off voucher/gift card, and for some retraining and a mark on his record for the staff member. Grim.

Tailtwister · 19/11/2013 10:47

Yuck. Why would someone do that?

MadameOvary · 19/11/2013 10:48

Ugh! YANBU. But I wouldn't have put the card back in my purse.

Trapper · 19/11/2013 10:49

Did it fix the card?

wonkylegs · 19/11/2013 10:49

Have you died yet or caught a terrible infectious disease..... Nope? Then you are probably overreacting.
It's not a very nice thing for him to do and probably warranted a 'yuck that's disgusting' commit at the time but the long term consequences bar some ridiculous squeamishness will be none.
If you want an excuse for a new purse that's another thing but really being out and about in a supermarket/school/workplace/public is going to expose you to lots of relatively benign germs and in general not being overly squeamish about it will help your body fight the actual serious ones when you come in contact with them.
Give it a wipe and move on.

SomethingOnce · 19/11/2013 10:50

Do you know how many poo, stomach bugs and spit germs are on money and chip and pin machines?

Ooh, yes, and Hepatitis C on banknotes from nasty cokeheads' disintegrating septa.

ControlGeek · 19/11/2013 10:54

It's not necessarily about the germs though wonky at least not for me (I can't speak for the OP) - it's the fact that it is someone else's bodily fluid and I don't want it on me or anything I own.

woooooooobooo · 19/11/2013 11:07

Ew that is vile. I don't think I could have taken the card back off him, however I would possibly have been too shocked to say anything. Seriously gross though and I would bin the card and antiseptic wipe the purse.

I also hate spit. Even if I drive past someone and they spit on pavement it makes me want to boak. Dirty, filthy thing to do

NoArmaniNoPunani · 19/11/2013 11:09

Your fault for putting the card back in your purse.

Shallishanti · 19/11/2013 11:10

Gross, and dangerous! But an alcohol wipe shoukd sort it, however I WOULD complain to the shop, this is a serious infection risk, imagine he is seeing 100s of people and handling their food...doesn't bear thinking about

bundaberg · 19/11/2013 11:13

omg someone on my facebook page had this happen to her a while ago!!!

do you live in Hove?

IamInvisible · 19/11/2013 11:15

Boak!

I wouldn't have taken the card back, tbh, and I would've complained.

kelda · 19/11/2013 11:17

Did you not ask 'why did you lick my card?'?

Bellini81 · 19/11/2013 11:19

Ewww, I would give the card a good scrub and ask for a new purse for xmas (river island have nice ones that aren't expensive)

SueDoku · 19/11/2013 13:02

I'm with wonkylegs - yes, it wasn't the nicest thing to do, and I might have got a tissue out and wiped the card - but really...?? The over-reactions on here could fill a whole (rather hilarious) drama.

Buy a new purse? Are you daft - or just rich as Croesus? Give it a rub with an anti-bacterial wipe if it makes you feel any better - but then think of all the things that you touch every day (door handles, taps, money etc) and what they might have on them - and then realise that you just sound melodramatic and entitled...

DropYourSword · 19/11/2013 13:06

I'm with you SueDoku. This actually probably would barely register on my Bleurgh scale!

littlemslazybones · 19/11/2013 13:15

Clearly you are a victim of some up and coming Dom Joly-esque hidden camera show, it's the only sensible explanation.

AndHarry · 19/11/2013 13:18

Shock That is disgusting. I would also chuck the purse and the loyalty card.

Crinkle77 · 19/11/2013 13:22

That is disgusting. Why would anyone think that is an acceptable thing to do? You could always complain but decline to say who it actually was.

Idespair · 19/11/2013 13:24

That is a bit odd but you could just wipe the loyalty card with an antibac wipe and also wipe the inside of the purse. The spit won't harm you, don't worry.

treaclesoda · 19/11/2013 13:28

yuk! Probably a bit of an overreaction to bin the purse though. I'd give it all a wipe with antibac wipes but I'm well aware that that is just a psychological thing, and we touch all sorts of bacteria in our daily lives without coming to any harm.

I'm more concerned about his lack of social skills than his bacteria. What a strange thing to do.

BakeOLiteGirl · 19/11/2013 13:35

Do you know what? The card worked perfectly after being licked Wink

I'm in Bristol not Hove. There must be card lickers nationwide.

I have managed to gain a little perspective since the incident. I threw away the card, wiped out the pocket it was in and have made a mental note not to use this section ever again.

It's not anything to do with the germs so much. It's just the whole spit thing. I can't even stand to see it on the pavement.

Yuk yuk yuk. I wouldn't have put the card in my purse. I would have asked him to put it in a paper bag and would have then washed it in some soapy water at home. I wash my cards if someone drops them on the floor. Fussy much moi? Grin
