Pre-chopped onions. In a bag. Am I alone in this?

I am prepared to be told that this is my own dirty little secret but still. Pre-chopped onions. Who would not buy?

Still pretty good value. I hate skinning the buggers and chopping them makes me cry. Pre-chopped onions are the way forward!

But Lula how do you get the friggin garlic out? What am I doing wrong? Confused

BlueSkySunnyDay · 17/11/2013 21:27

Lula - doesnt solve the paper layer problem but I love this garlic twist Cant believe people still use those crap press things where half the garlic is stuck in the holes.

Definitely! I don't use them for everything but they are good to have in. I love chopped garlic as well.

Shaky · 17/11/2013 21:47

My ex used to wear swimming goggles for chopping onions, by god, did he look a twat!

I use the frozen chopped onions, they are a god send. If I'm using the slow cooker I chuck the onions and mince in together on high for 30 mins to brown before putting in the other ingredients.

I use the "lazy garlic" in jars, which is awesome. They also make "lazy caramelised onions". I used these when making braised steak in the slow cooker last week, it had a lovely sweet flavour.
I served it with frozen mash too Grin lovely comfort food, with minimal effort.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 17/11/2013 21:51

Waitrose do red onions sliced.

ThePorpoiseOfStupidity · 17/11/2013 22:01

AmandinePoulain I agree their own stuff isn't as good. I've resorted to the lazy copped garlic in the jar but it doesn't last as long as the frozen stuff as it needs to be used within 3 months.

ThePorpoiseOfStupidity · 17/11/2013 22:01

chopped

ShowMeYourTARDIS · 17/11/2013 22:09

I would totally buy it.

Wuldric · 17/11/2013 22:15

I am giggling at Shaky's ex. I really wish you had taken a picture of him in his swimming goggles, chopping onions :)

So, one bag of chopped onions for the weekend. They have:

  1. Been used in a carbonara
  2. Been used in a poncey recipe for chicken with lettuce
  3. Been used in a shepherd's pie
  4. Been used in a chicken stir fry

And I still have some left over!! 60p. My oh my. What's not to like?

BlueSky, I've only ever seen those used for chopping up weed Shock

I wonder what their original intended use was!

bubalou · 17/11/2013 22:37

I used to and then I realise and onion was 20p and a bag of chopped was £1.

Also the bag goes out of date quicker.

My eyes don't water when I chop onions so it's doesn't bother me - hard as nails Wink

LulaPalooza · 17/11/2013 22:39

Amandine you give it a good smack from the bottom on the work top and it breaks the bits up. Satisfying kitchen violence. I love your name by the way.

BlueSky that's for grinding weed, no?!

PresidentServalan · 17/11/2013 23:17

They are for casseroles etc if you don't want to use a whole onion (so I'm told anyway - I don't cook anything!!)

Kewcumber · 17/11/2013 23:19

They are particularly good when there is just two of you. I rarely need a whole chopped onion unless I;m batch cooking.

Scholes34 · 17/11/2013 23:20

I don't cry when I chop onions. I've always put it down to the fact that I wear contacts. Is this really the reason?

Kewcumber · 17/11/2013 23:21

How can a bag of frozen chopped onion go off quicker than a fresh onion? Confused

Kewcumber · 17/11/2013 23:24

I throw frozen swede and carrots (mashed) into just about anything. Gets veg into DS without the arguments and I then give him peas and sweetcorn to his hearts content.

Kewcumber · 17/11/2013 23:25

nothing beats actually cooking from scratch and prepping veg

Yes it does - sitting on sofa with a glass of wine, reading a book and chatting to DS about his Lego football stadium he built for London United.

IAlwaysThought · 17/11/2013 23:25

I love the pre chopped onions, they are brill. I use them all the time.

justmakingdo · 17/11/2013 23:28

Simple bolognaise at 6.30 am before going to work
Boil kettle
Open freezer
packet of frozen mince
Couple of handfuls of frozen mushrooms
Same onions
Same peppers
Couple cubes frozen garlic

Sling all in slow cooker
Tip over some boiling water
Add jar bolognaise sauce or tomatoes
Stir
Switch on and go to work

Come home to lovely smells!!!

bubalou · 18/11/2013 06:57

Kewcumber - I really don't know but I keep them in the fridge and the date on the chopped onions was only ever for 2-3 days max.

However when they are whole they have been ok for 1-2 weeks.

I'm sure u can ignore the use by date for a couple of days but they do go funny.

Lonelygran · 18/11/2013 07:23

Chopped food does of course go off more quickly than food that is still inside its Nature-provided little skin.
But more worryingly, no one has mentioned that as soon as you chop veg it starts to lose nutrients. I am sure I learned this at school, along hwith the fact that if you boil them too long the vitamins dissolve into the water and get poured down the drain.
Can anyone more scientifically minded tell me if this is right about chopping?

paxtecum · 18/11/2013 07:31

I'm with LonelyGran: food does loose nutrients when chopped.

Onions keep for months. I used to grow them and they would last right through the winter.
