Pre-chopped onions. In a bag. Am I alone in this?

I am prepared to be told that this is my own dirty little secret but still. Pre-chopped onions. Who would not buy?

Still pretty good value. I hate skinning the buggers and chopping them makes me cry. Pre-chopped onions are the way forward!

Frozen diced onions are brilliant. I find them scarcely more expensive than fresh onions, too, which seems wrong.

I'm tempted by the mushroom version too - I'm so allergic I avoid washing up anything that's had mushrooms on it, but occasionally if I'm cooking for just the not-me members of my family I'd be very tempted to chuck a few ounces into a casserole or Bolognese or something.

catgirl1976 · 17/11/2013 18:41

I love pre chopped onions

I buy loads of them

Not tried the frozen ones yet

Whoever invented them should get Nobel prize or something

I also always buy pre-chopped Butternut squash and occasionally pre sliced mushrooms

SkinnybitchWannabe · 17/11/2013 18:42

Yabu. I never buy anything ready chopped.

Wuldric · 17/11/2013 18:42

OMG - you lot have introduced me to pre-prepared butternut squash, peppers AND mushrooms

Delighted. Absolutely delighted.

I discovered them on MN Smile.
I also do a thing from Nigella called onion mush.
If you have time, and a glut of onions, chop and fry them until lovely and brown.
Then freeze.
A lump of this adds instant flavour to anything.

teenagetantrums · 17/11/2013 18:43

Billy banter, i get onions from the market that make me cry, no idea what they have done to supermarket ones.

Queenofknickers · 17/11/2013 18:43

Yes yes YES to prechopped onions!

AMumInScotland · 17/11/2013 18:44

Even better (IMHO) are frozen garlic cubes. I used to always be throwing out 3/4 of the garlic because I don't use it often - now, just take one cube out of the tub per thingummy of garlic (what's the word? My brain is mush) and job's a good 'un!

BikeRunSki · 17/11/2013 18:44

Has anyone tried those frozen jacket spuds which are meant to taste oven cooked? I am thinking of getting some for work lunches, as an alternative to soup or sandwiches. We have a freezer and microwaves.

I buy them chopped and frozen. Absolute revelation after years and years of swearing at the dislocated wrists from chopping fresh ones - I have hypermobility syndrome and chopping onions is hard for me. They're not that expensive either, £1 for 900g is pretty good value. I also buy frozen mash for quick midweek meals when my joints are bad (make fresh mash for 'nicer' meals or when I feel ok), but not grated cheese because it's more expensive and less nice. I can't grate cheese (because of the wrists again) but DP does it for me.

I haven't tried frozen peppers and mushrooms. Are those any good? I always thought they'd be slimy, but maybe it's worth a shot.

Butternut squash tip... Put in whole into the oven.. For an hour. Top and tail when cooked, scoop out seeds. Voila !!!!

Easiest veg ever!!

Babycino81 · 17/11/2013 18:48

You're not alone. They're a culinary revolution.

Liveinthepresent · 17/11/2013 18:49

Recent discovery here - and am never going to chop an onion again.
Have even suggested to DH they would make a great stocking filler for MIL as she hates chopping onions.

Longdistance · 17/11/2013 18:49

Pre chopped garlic. Not seen the onions yet, but I get dh to chop them.

HettiePetal · 17/11/2013 18:51

Weird thing.....onions from Morrisons do not make me cry. The one's I buy from the greengrocer do.

I think it's to do with freshness.

YANBU!

Mumsnet introduced me to frozen onions, garlic and mashed potatoes - and I have never looked back.

If only someone would sell peeled, frozen beetroot ...

Hassled · 17/11/2013 18:52

I stopped buying them because they're not chopped finely enough. And I used to get infuriated every single time by their general no-fine-enough-ness. I worked out that chopping them myself was better for my blood pressure.

Frozen garlic and ginger, though, in little cubes - they have revolutionised my life.

toffeesponge · 17/11/2013 18:52

I also buy frozen mushrooms for emergency mushroom requirements.

I have a great freezer book so tomorrow I am going to see what I can prepare and see if it is cheaper.

Maryz - I buy mine in Waitrose.

I have also bought frozen garlic and herbs but mostly use lazy garlic now with the odd fresh bulb bought.

ShatnersBassoon · 17/11/2013 18:54

I get frozen onions and garlic. They're so convenient, and no smelly peels to put in the bin.
