Pre-chopped onions. In a bag. Am I alone in this?

I am prepared to be told that this is my own dirty little secret but still. Pre-chopped onions. Who would not buy?

Still pretty good value. I hate skinning the buggers and chopping them makes me cry. Pre-chopped onions are the way forward!

I used to but frozen chopped onion all the time but then we moved to NZ and you'd need a second mortgage to but them here.

I do have little tubs of minced garlic, chilli and ginger in the fridge which are brilliant. The little tubes of herbs used to be a lifesaver too, but then I discovered almost all of them contain milk (why???) so with a dairy allergic DD, I've had to go back to the fresh ones again.

RhondaJean · 17/11/2013 20:13

I think they use some slightly dodgy chemicals in the fresh prepped veg to keep it from going off. It also tastes odd - the carrots for example seem to seal off round the cut edges.

The frozen ones don't hold the texture either.

It's alright in a push but nothing beats actually cooking from scratch and prepping veg. I do buy prepared packs to make soup and blend down so I'm not religious about it but it is most emphatically not the same.

Twoandtwomakeschaos · 17/11/2013 20:14

I did not know one could buy pre-chopped butternut squash! Where from? I use other convenience vegetables, when I have freezer space, especially spinach, as fresh is so frustrating, goes off so quickly and cooks away to nothing.

usualsuspect · 17/11/2013 20:14

I've always got the little frozen cubes of chilli in the freezer.

cocolepew · 17/11/2013 20:15

I buy them in Asda or Iceland. Asda do unfrozen ones as well.
Iceland have a brilliant selection of frozen veg.
My local butchers now sell pre peeled potatoes and ready cut chips.

Writerwannabe83 · 17/11/2013 20:17

If I didnt wear contact lenses I would think this was a great idea but chopping onions doesnt make me cry as I wear contacts. Im guessing these are the bog standard onions too, I only ever use red.

I guess if you work long hours or have a busy life then why not but personally I like chopping stuff up and I would assume that freshly prepared fruit and veg would taste better.

Now if you had said Jif lemon was a great idea then I would Hmm you really can't beat a freshly squeezed lemon.

BlueSkySunnyDay · 17/11/2013 20:29

vvviola - I buy fresh basil and sage, chop a whole bag with scissors then freeze with a tiny bit of water in ice cube trays. They last months. Glad you said about the milk as im intolerant and that wouldnt have even crossed my mind.

Twoandtwomakeschaos · 17/11/2013 20:37

Bike, Iceland stock two ranges of frozen jacket potato, and I think the "Something Farm" ones (begins with a "B" think) are better than McCain's.

FryOneFatManic · 17/11/2013 20:39

Prepping veg is something I often have no time to do, as I need to have dinner ready and eaten within an hour on some weeknights.

And you are still cooking from scratch; the veg may be frozen but is still uncooked.

Mumpiring · 17/11/2013 20:41

I want them! i can't get them anymore. YES i know an onion is a quarter of the price but my eyes really react so badly. i have a spoon hanging out of my mouth, the extractor fan on, candles lit and i'm still blinded by the fumes. So if the shops are listening, please bring back onions in a bag!

Weegiemum · 17/11/2013 20:49

I always buy pre-chopped onions.

I've no feeling in my hands due to a neurological illness.

So I find it hard to chop them, and if I cut myself, I don't feel it.

Frozen pre-chopped onions from Farmfoods are a essential for me (along with peppers, mushrooms and leeks!

CocacolaMum · 17/11/2013 20:52

economically frozen spinach is brilliant. About £1 a kg compared to £4 or £5 per kilo. If you are cooking it down anyway its a no brainer!

Ishy13 · 17/11/2013 20:54

I discovered ready peeled potato's the other day, they will change your life!!!

Heartbrokenmum73 · 17/11/2013 20:55

Holy shit Ishy - where did you get those?

I want some now!

Wuldric · 17/11/2013 20:56

Hold a teaspoon upside down in your mouth while you chop them and you don't cry

Which way around is upside down? I suppose that you mean the scoopy bit is on your tongue? And this makes your eyes not react to onions how?

To me, pre-cut onions tend to have a slightly BO smell.

WhereIsMyHat · 17/11/2013 20:57

We've got shit hot knives so chopping onions is fine and not something I find a chore. Before my milk allergic son came along I used to love frozen mash and I find making mash such a chore, now I do it with almond milk and olive oil so no shop bought stuff anymore. Waitrose frozen herbs are brilliant too, I couldn't do without them.

ArgyMargy · 17/11/2013 21:01

Potatoes

StetsonsAreCool · 17/11/2013 21:08

I had a massive debate with the guys in my office about these not long ago. They couldn't get their heads around it. I felt like a right pariah, but like I said to them, it makes my life easier and that makes me happy, so

I wonder if them living a 10 minute drive from work, and me living an hour's drive has anything to do with it? Hmm I don't think they get how much of that early evening is taken up with driving. Especially when you combine it with having a 3yo to get in bed by 7pm. I don't have time in the week to peel onions!

LulaPalooza · 17/11/2013 21:10

I quite like chopping and prepping veg, I find it therapeutic after a hard day at work and the commute home. I wear lenses so chopping onion poses no challenge. I have a carrier bag on the worktop and peel straight into that (we're in a third floor flat so no option to have a compost bin. Which annoys me greatly as we recycle everything else. LB Southwark - pls provide compost bins. Kthx.)

However, I hate peeling and chopping or crushing garlic. Bastard papery bits of skin everywhere ggggrrrrrrr. Even my beautiful mezzaluna has not taken away the garlic paper rage... so when I discovered pre-chopped frozen garlic in Tesco I nearly cried with joy. It comes in little cardboard pots. They do coriander and chilli too. I ruddy well love it.

TapirbackFucker · 17/11/2013 21:15

I can't prep veg as I have carpal tunnel badly enough to be unable to hold/chop/peel veg. Frozen pre prepped veg is the only way I am able to actually cook these days!
