Pre-chopped onions. In a bag. Am I alone in this?

I am prepared to be told that this is my own dirty little secret but still. Pre-chopped onions. Who would not buy?

Still pretty good value. I hate skinning the buggers and chopping them makes me cry. Pre-chopped onions are the way forward!

Frozen mushrooms are fine for stuff like shepherd's pie.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 17/11/2013 19:18

I also buy frozen:

Italian herb mix
Ginger
Asian spice mix
Shallots
Chopped chillies.

AlwaysInBed · 17/11/2013 19:25

I buy them from Tesco Maryz

trinity0097 · 17/11/2013 19:40

I have frozen cut up onions, mushrooms and peppers in my freezer, perfect for cooking when I am knackered after a long day at work and want to cook, but not deal with the faff of chopping etc... I also have frozen ready chopped cubes of garlic and chilli that you can get in the freezer aisle. From all than and a tin of tomatoes and a dash of this and a dash of that I can knock up a quick pasta sauce, or make a Spag Bol, or make chilli etc...

I also use the 2min packet micro rices. Means I can have nice flavours and hubby can't feed me too much as it's already the correct size portion!

"My fella is the chef in our house (thank God.) He reckons the skin keeps the onion fresh and therefore he wouldn't buy chopped onion."

I agree with this. I would never buy them chopped because I think a lot of the natural goodness would be lost. Don't know if I'm right about that, but just my instinct.

tinmug · 17/11/2013 19:45

I fucking love chopping onions.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 17/11/2013 19:46

Frozen onions make cooking so much less of a faff. I'm disabled and all the pre-prepared stuff means I can cook for myself.

Hi this is a marvellous thread. I just want to share how annoyed I was when my DH bought a huge bag of unwashed potatoes from Morrisons when I wasn't looking. I always use pre mashed and frozen chips and wedges. I am so busy with a FT job,3 teenagers, an elderly dog and a DH who works away during the week.Life is too short for peeling potatoes!

Naoko · 17/11/2013 19:48

I buy mine from Asda Maryz, they're not just Waitrose-y!

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 17/11/2013 19:48

I buy chopped onions, I hate chopping onions, doesn't matter what I do my eyes get so so sore. Fabulous idea!

claig · 17/11/2013 19:49

"Onions are typically stored whole in a cool pantry. Once cut, however, they require refrigeration so they don't rot. While pre-cutting onions speeds food preparation, they can lose some of their flavor unless packaged and stored correctly -- and the storage method depends on the eventual use. Refrigerated onions have a short shelf life but are usable in nearly any recipe. Frozen onions store longer but suffer some texture loss and are best used in cooked dishes."

I fucking love peeling potatoes too. I think I'm going to ask for a new potato peeler for Christmas.

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 17/11/2013 19:50

I am not sure about the skin etc or losing the goodness but they only have a very short use by date on them.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 17/11/2013 19:50

I do draw a line with boiled eggs. Looking at you Morrisons!

claig · 17/11/2013 19:51

Chopped onions are also stored in plastic and the less of that the better in my opinion.

usualsuspect · 17/11/2013 19:52

I often buy them from Asda.
I like an easy life.

Bubbles1066 · 17/11/2013 19:58

I buy frozen chopped onions but I have to say that fresh ones do taste better but for everyday cooking frozen is fine. If I'm making something special though I use fresh.

EatingAllTheCrumpets · 17/11/2013 19:58

I'm tight when it comes to prepared fruit and veg, however I always buy frozen onions, and I buy the chopped red onion and freeze it. Same with garlic it takes longer to clean the fucking garlic crusher than it does to make the dinner! So I buy frozen cubes of it.

Like you say, who wouldn't buy chopped onions, they are evil to chop yourself!

AmandinePoulain · 17/11/2013 20:02

I'm a recent frozen onions and peppers convert - they are much less wasteful and so much quicker. I've also been known to resort to frozen mash, it looks really odd frozen into little nuggets but it's actually really nice as long as you add a bit of milk.

Our Tesco have stopped stocking the little cubes of garlic, ginger and chilli too Porpoise. Instead they're stocking their own brand range - which are rubbish. They don't come in cubes, and all the garlic is just stuck together in one huge cube, I end up hacking at it to try and get any out and make a big mess in the process Angry. Unless there's a trick to it that I'm missing?

BergholtStuttleyJohnson · 17/11/2013 20:07

I bought frozen chopped ones once and thought they were flavourless and limp. Me and DH love onions and have them in every meal, they have to flavoursome and slightly crunchy for us! I do buy frozen chopped peppers and frozen sweetcorn though.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 17/11/2013 20:07

I buy, and use, the following:

Frozen, diced onion
Frozen, chopped mushrooms
Frozen, chopped peppers
Pre-mashed potato
Microwave rice

I'm sure there's other things that I buy for quick shortcuts.

Some people hate cooking - for me, it's just another chore, it's not 'fun' or 'enjoyable', I bloody hate it. So I use as many shortcuts as I possibly can. I'm not going to feel bad about it. It makes my life easier, which makes me easier to live with Grin

FrostedButts · 17/11/2013 20:08

I find pre chopped onions a bit slimy and they go off far too quickly. I've had a bag of whole red onions on the go since Sept and they are still fine. As a fan of tuna and raw onion sandwiches (only in the safety of my own home where no one can smell my breath!) I wouldn't buy pre chopped unless I was physically unable to chop them myself.

FrostedButts · 17/11/2013 20:10

I do love those tubes of crushed garlic in oil though - perfect for cooking on the hob. I never use whole garlic cloves any more unless I'm roasting loads of veg together.
