To think if it's ok to use "Wendy" to describe bullying women

sparklysilversequins · 15/11/2013 18:17

Then we should come up with names for other characteristics including physical in people too?

Eg. Fat Women - Lisa's
Fat Men - Stephens
Men who hit women - Toms
Women who hit men - Emma's
Nasty male bosses - Gordon's
Nasty Female bosses - Gemma's
Shirty impatient teachers - Mary's
People who shoplift - Leslie/Lesley's

Do you see what I am saying? Because quite frankly I am sick to the back teeth of seeing posters whining about being "Wendied". It's hurtful and insulting to people with that name. I love someone dearly with the name Wendy and whenever I see her name used like that on here it makes me so Angry.

Why is it ok to take someone's name, the most fundamental thing about a person and use it as a Noun to describe really awful, spiteful, manipulative people. Truthfully would you be fine seeing it if it was YOUR name or your child's name?

It's a nick name that only causes a few posters a a small mount of grief on here, surely?

It is unlikely to cause trouble for a rl Wendy, wouldn't you say, mn is as anonymous as one chooses to be?

I share a name of a woman who does Dallas, it hasn't caused me any trouble in real life.

SPsDoesntLikeChaffingFishnets · 15/11/2013 20:22

I've seen it and didn't understand it.

Replace it with my name. It rhymes with belly, telly and smelly. Imagine the fun.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 15/11/2013 20:23

ErrorError

Don't forget
Brian of yoni massage fame
Tricky Vicky
Chatty Cathy

I'm sure there are tons more.

I used Wendy as a descriptor on a thread the other day. I admit I didn't really stop to think how a RL Wendy would react. I've just decided I'm going to stop using it, even though it's kind of convenient.

Mia4 · 15/11/2013 20:23

YANBU but it happens offline too. My friend is Tracey and she's lovely but in our office they once had a woman called Tracey who fucked any and everyone, made a play for anyone in a relationship and had anal (and screeched about it at a works meal after) in a restaurant car park. Since then any kind of lewd behaviour of sleeziness has been called 'pulling a tracey' by the old staff.

gamerchick · 15/11/2013 20:28

I had to go check if it was a full moon.. nearly.. 'kin hell the things people choose to be offended about.

ADishBestEatenCold · 15/11/2013 20:31

I did, but I'll read them again. I'll read this one, "anchoress only I can possibly know what I was thinking when I wrote my OP".

That's true! Only you can possibly know what you were thinking when you listed fat men and women in a group with violent abusers, shop lifters and people who are "deemed unacceptable".

Again I will add that, for me, this has totally overshadowed any reasonable opinion you may or may not have and has really Shock me. I have found nothing in your other posts that negates my Shock.

sparklysilversequins · 15/11/2013 20:33

Yes I get you're shocked adish. I am sorry that YOU don't understand the point I was making but others seems to and quite frankly I can't be arsed to explain it again so that you can.

OP posts:
NorbertDentressangle · 15/11/2013 20:33

I know a Wendy in real life and TBH I never even thought of her when I've read Wendy threads on here and , equally, I've never thought of the MN term when I've seen her IYSWIM.

Ditto, friends or acquaintances with names with other connotations eg. Dick, Minnie, Tom, Sharon, Tracy.

Caff2 · 15/11/2013 20:38

Bit OTT to get too upset about. My name is absolutely horrible and middle aged and boring, according to many on here. My long name OK but posters worried about giving it in case the awful happens, and their child could be called my short name. Entirely unbothered. There are very many worse things at sea.

Lonelygran · 15/11/2013 20:41

Won't anyone think of the Jezebels?

mitchsta · 15/11/2013 20:43

It upsets me when people use an apostrophe to form a plural.

kickassangel · 15/11/2013 20:44

I think that the op has a point. If something upsets someone then it upsets them., and any attempt at creating labels an stereotypes is likely to cause offense.

But I am totally in agreement with how the list reads, even if that weren't the intention.

I think the op and people using Wendy should remember that they are posting to a public forum and try to avoid any offense.

sparklysilversequins · 15/11/2013 20:51

Please feel free to report my OP if you find it offensive but in relation to my other posts I think it is quite obvious why I used that example. Anyway I have been hovering over this thread all night and I want to go and drink some Wineand watch Life of Pi Smile. I am glad I posted this thread though. It's been interesting.

ADishBestEatenCold · 15/11/2013 20:51

On the contrary sparklysilversequins, I do understand the point you were making, but perhaps you don't understand (or at least in any way acknowlege) the point I am making. However do let me be "arsed to explain it again". Despite understanding the point you were making, I found (as you may have noted in my other posts) "any reasonable opinion you may or may not have had" to be "totally overshadowed" by the FACT that you had grouped fat men and women in a list with violent abusers, shop lifters etc.

In fact (I don't know if you will be interested in this) in RL I have a name of which the diminutive is quite often used as an insult, indeed I have seen it used in that way on mumsnet. It certainly has been used that way (as a not very funny joke) lots throughout my life, yet I find it much more insulting that you would group (for example) my OH with violent abusers, shop lifters etc, when trying to make your point.

waltermittymissus · 15/11/2013 20:54

Unless you have a problem with:

Billy No Mates
Peeping Tom
Doubting Thomas

etc etc YABVU.

It's not based on a name, it's based on a character with that name. FFS what a non issue!

"How would you feel if it was your name?" I wouldn't give a fuck. I'm an adult. And rational, for the most part.

SPsDoesntLikeChaffingFishnets · 15/11/2013 21:00

Isn't Kevin used as well since that We Need To Talk About Kevin?

usualsuspect · 15/11/2013 21:00

My DD has a name that people use to describe a certain type of person

It does piss me off.

Mintyy · 15/11/2013 21:01

I just think that if the Wendys on Mumsnet have spoken and have said that they don't want their name to be used as shorthand for "bitchy woman who turns all your friends against you" then it really isn't difficult to take that on board and say ok, we won't use the name Wendy again in that way.

It is really not a bit ask.

Is it? Confused

Why does it have to be an argument and involve the handing over of grips?

HollaAtMeBaby · 15/11/2013 21:01

You need to get out more, OP, or maybe just stop spending so much time on here if the word Wendy has become so negatively loaded for you.

Tikkamasala · 15/11/2013 21:01

I didn't know the blubber jury Blume connection til this thread! I thought Wendy was just made up by that OP as ops sometimes do name the people they're talking about!

usualsuspect · 15/11/2013 21:04

I agree with Mintyy.

Handing out grips is a bit lame tbh.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 15/11/2013 21:04

There are some sensitive souls on here tonight, aren't there?

"I'm more than happy to compare fat people with violent people but just don't fucking call them Wendy!" Grin

usualsuspect · 15/11/2013 21:04

And the 'you spend to much time on here' posts are even lamer.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 15/11/2013 21:05

The handing out grips thing gives me a mental image of someone reaching through the laptop screen, passing me a Kirby grip.

waltermittymissus · 15/11/2013 21:05

^My DD has a name that people use to describe a certain type of person

It does piss me off.^

But why? Genuinely, why? You can't think it's because everyone in the world thinks your dd has whatever negative traits are associated with the name.

It does confuse me, the big problem with it.

I'm not sure everyone should just say "yeah, ok if it upsets you, we'll stop". Loads of people on here have said swearing upsets them. They're generally told to fuck the fuck off! Grin
