To think if it's ok to use "Wendy" to describe bullying women

Then we should come up with names for other characteristics including physical in people too?

Eg. Fat Women - Lisa's
Fat Men - Stephens
Men who hit women - Toms
Women who hit men - Emma's
Nasty male bosses - Gordon's
Nasty Female bosses - Gemma's
Shirty impatient teachers - Mary's
People who shoplift - Leslie/Lesley's

Do you see what I am saying? Because quite frankly I am sick to the back teeth of seeing posters whining about being "Wendied". It's hurtful and insulting to people with that name. I love someone dearly with the name Wendy and whenever I see her name used like that on here it makes me so Angry.

Why is it ok to take someone's name, the most fundamental thing about a person and use it as a Noun to describe really awful, spiteful, manipulative people. Truthfully would you be fine seeing it if it was YOUR name or your child's name?

sparkly

It was not chosen by the poster because of any negative connotation. It was just a name.

My intellect, my relationships, my genetic makeup, my free will. These are more fundamental than my name

sparklysilversequins · 15/11/2013 18:35

anchoress

I'm glad you said that because I knew someone would. My point is if its ok to label people's behaviour using a name then surely it's ok to do so for ALL characteristics isn't it? Lets label people who are overweight, lets give them their own special name, lets do it to people with big noses too. Why not? It doesn't mean anything does it? Where's the harm?

I know a Wendy..her nickname is witch..she's vile so not all Wendy's are bloody wonderful!!

PartyFops · 15/11/2013 18:37

What Anchoress said! ^^

sparklysilversequins · 15/11/2013 18:37

newt you are known to everyone except maybe your children by that name. This makes it the most fundamental thing about you to others.

It's only used on here, not like it's a general term in RL. Can't say it would bother me if I was called Wendy.

Just reminded me if that episode of Friends when Chandler is working in Tulsa with a woman called Wendy. Monica declares Wendy is a fat girls name Shock

sapphirestar · 15/11/2013 18:37

It's from a book though, not just something a poster randomly made up.
Think you're going a bit OTT, sorry

NewtRipley · 15/11/2013 18:38

Your list of characteristics is interesting as well. You chose ones you deemed negative. Sticky.

Mumpiring · 15/11/2013 18:38

I know a Wendy who is a very nice woman. So I'm going to vote no, it's not ok.

Also I hate the use of the word Jeff to denote ... what not sure, have seen it used disparagingly and I'm not happy about that. Know somebody with a Jeff in her life and, well, I can't push water uphill, but I'd hate if Jeff became a word for asshole or cold sore or something.

AngelsLieToKeepControl · 15/11/2013 18:39

I have a close relative called Wendy, it actually never even crossed my mind before to put the two together because I can seperate reality from a shorthand term used on a website.

I bet all the Rogers in the world are furious their name being used as shorthand for shagging, or Bob being everyones uncle, or Billy with no mates.

NewtRipley · 15/11/2013 18:39

sparkly.

X post. I disagree. They know my name but I'd dismiss any judgment they made about me if it was purely on the basis of my name.

OvO · 15/11/2013 18:40

I'm a Wendy and I don't like it.

Makes me go all "fuck off" when I see it.

I'm not over sensitive. I'm just grumpy.

sparklysilversequins · 15/11/2013 18:40

Thank you OvO.

But don't you realise it doesn't mean anything? It's just a name?

Well clearly it does mean something doesn't it?

OP posts:
NewtRipley · 15/11/2013 18:41

Angels

I agree.

sparklysilversequins · 15/11/2013 18:41

Read my other post about that newt.

Anchoress · 15/11/2013 18:41

You're misunderstanding me, OP. I pointed out that you have listed in your OP characteristics and 'types' you apparently consider negative, and fat people are listed there along with unpleasant bosses, violent men and shoplifters.

ADishBestEatenCold · 15/11/2013 18:42

You may or may not have a point sparklysilversequins, however I am so utterly horrified to find that you group fat men and women in with such people as bullies, violent abusers and shoplifters that it totally overshadows any reasonable opinion you may or may not have. I am very Shock!

Do you real feel like that?

SecretNutellaFix · 15/11/2013 18:42

Do you similarly object to a Pollyanna?

usualsuspect · 15/11/2013 18:43

It's a bit stupid.

I've only seen it on here it annoys me slightly less than the pom bear.

NoComet · 15/11/2013 18:43

YANBU - in theory
In practice it makes me Grin, I know several lovely Wendy's, but there was one utter cow.

sparklysilversequins · 15/11/2013 18:43

No I have not. I have said we should be able to label all characteristics shouldn't we? Negative or not if its all so harmless.

I have struggled with my weight my entire life.

OP posts:
trashcanjunkie · 15/11/2013 18:43

naughty little boys - keiren Wink

NewtRipley · 15/11/2013 18:44

That's what I meant too Anchoress

Also, AFAIK, the name Wendy was not chosen because of Peter Pan or anything. It was just a random woman's name, chosen instead of saying X or Y

NewtRipley · 15/11/2013 18:46

I do see what you are getting at OP,

sparklysilversequins · 15/11/2013 18:46

I don't view fat people negatively. It's just on a list. But you lot obviously do because if you read my OP I distinctly said ALL characteristics including physical. I knew when I typed it that's what posters would fasten on. My point is why is it not ok to give THAT it's own name too?
