to snap spaghetti in half before it goes in the saucepan

It doesn't fit if I don't!

My sister says I should stick it in, wait for the half that is in the water to soften enough, then bend it over so the rest goes in the hot water too.

However I don't like this because
a. the top bit sticking out the pan gets singed by the hot metal of the pan, which tastes bad
b. half the spaghetti is a bit more cooked than the other half

Heathens!
You do not snap spaghetti!

Fan it out, wait a moment, then a quick scope round with the pan lid and in it all goes.

However, you lot are better than a group of teens,
DF took camping. They wanted a knife to cut the spaghetti in half Confused

Scoop

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 10/11/2013 21:05

I cook it properly. ;)

Long

Mixing spaghetti shapes

Really? People do that? So farfalle, penne and conchigle in one pan? That is fucked up man, seriously.

PatTheHammer · 10/11/2013 21:10

Desperate times call for desperate measures bogey.

I've even been known to cook wholegrain and white pasta together (putting the wholegrain stuff in for a bit longer) to finish off bags in the cupboard. Shocking I know.

Racers · 10/11/2013 21:26
Here is Jamie Oliver showing the 'fan out' method. I can't find Keith Floyd doing it but I'm sure that is where I learnt it from. You don't need to chuck it in quite how JO does, you can rest it on the bottom of the pan and let go. You then go round tapping the pasta into the water as the ends start to soften.

But if you snap it in half you can't do a big satisfying twiddle around your fork!

CocacolaMum · 10/11/2013 21:35

Sometimes I snap, sometimes I don't. To stop it getting singed tho just run it under the tap before it goes into the pan

ToysRLuv · 10/11/2013 21:38

The only pasta shapes I don't like to mix are spaghetti/linguini/tagliatelle and other stuff. The mix of long and short bits is a bit trickier to eat. But I've done this a few times. After all, needs must.

Donkeyok · 10/11/2013 21:38

I'm a snapper, its easier for the kids

haha I thought I invented that deviant little manourve

PatTheHammer · 10/11/2013 21:41

Yep, you can't mix Tag with anything else I find. Or macaroni, it cooks differently due to its small size. The rest are fair game though.

ananikifo · 10/11/2013 21:49

YABU. If you snap it, it will be too short to eat properly. YABU if you slurp, too. Just do the fan or twist thing, and learn to twist spaghetti around a fork, using a spoon or the side of your bowl to help.

ToysRLuv · 10/11/2013 21:50

You can still twist it if it's in half [twisting ninja face]

Caoilainn · 10/11/2013 21:53

I'm a snapper! Started when DS was little, now he is older (17) Blush I still snap out of habit!
I prefer bow ties, DS prefers shells or twists. I cook twice so we have the shapes we prefer, def a PFB/1st word problem Grin

AchyFox · 10/11/2013 22:44

Look, you snap once.

No twisting, no spoons, no knives, no mixing shapes, no hole measurer things, no sticking together, just cook the fecking stuff and eat it.

mousmous · 10/11/2013 22:48

how do you snap without a million little pieces raining ono the kitchen floor?

starlight1234 · 10/11/2013 22:51

I started snapping when son chocked slurping it up.

Bogeyface · 10/11/2013 23:01

NO NO NO!!!

You can NOT mix pasta!

Just buy one shape (ok 2, penne and spag in this house) then it is not an issue!

Apart from...........Blush

when I ran out of lasagne on the top layer so I put on a layer of spaghetti. The kids loved it and I now occasionally make "spaggy lasaggny" with spag replacing lasagne sheets!

SouthernComforts · 10/11/2013 23:09

I'm amazed a comment can get deleted on a thread about spaghetti! Grin

I never even thought to snap it!

ToysRLuv · 10/11/2013 23:19

Shock at bogeyface!

I wouldn't do that! I would just do one layer less.. Or snap all the sheets into lots of little pieces and make it into a pasta bake.

I love lasagne. DF and DM had the most epic fight about whether there was supposed to be cheese on top of lasagne or not when I was around 12. It resulted in lasagne never being made at our house again Sad Angry Petty bastards!!!

mousmous · 10/11/2013 23:25

I love pasta.

but had one traumatic pasta experience when staying with grandparents. they were of the opinion that all starchs have to be cooked for 20 min. I like my pasta with a texture, any texture but mush.
imagine gloop and mince. I told them I like potatoes better after that and pastagate was never repeated

juneybean · 10/11/2013 23:28

I snap my spaghetti!
