to snap spaghetti in half before it goes in the saucepan

It doesn't fit if I don't!

My sister says I should stick it in, wait for the half that is in the water to soften enough, then bend it over so the rest goes in the hot water too.

However I don't like this because
a. the top bit sticking out the pan gets singed by the hot metal of the pan, which tastes bad
b. half the spaghetti is a bit more cooked than the other half

I like twirling long spaghetti.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 10/11/2013 13:00

I thought it wasn't possible to snap spaghetti in half. Something about it always breaking into at least three pieces

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 10/11/2013 13:01

I was right bang goes the theory link

sapfu · 10/11/2013 13:01

YANBU

Why can't we buy spaghetti in swirly little nests, like tagliatelle?

Snap away, OP!

Sunflower49 · 10/11/2013 13:03

I am a snapper, too. I'm a messy eater and it makes it easier for me to fit it in the pan, and to eat it!
DP hates me for it, says he can't twizzle it around his fork if It's not long enough.

valiumredhead · 10/11/2013 13:03

The porpoise-I do that! No need for snapping and every strand of the pasta cooks properly. You hold the pasta upright in middle of the pan and sort of twist it and let it fall. Cooks perfectly every time.

gaggiagirl · 10/11/2013 13:04

Snapper here too.

coffeeinbed · 10/11/2013 13:43

Ok I might have got the bad luck thing wrong, but I've never needed to snap.
Just put them in, swirl, wait a bit, and that's that.

Anydrinkwilldo · 10/11/2013 13:44

Have to snap-it has to be even too......

starfishmummy · 10/11/2013 15:17

Eat penne or fusilli or something short. Problem solved

ThePinkOcelot · 10/11/2013 15:21

I always snap it as well. It's easier.

Of all the pasta there is I hate spaghetti, I have no clue why. I snap it and it becomes more bearable for me to eat and easier for the kids

letsgomaths · 10/11/2013 16:22

Just remember that when you snap spaghetti, the middle part of each strand often flies out. For some reason, many of the strands each break into three pieces!

BitOutOfPractice · 10/11/2013 16:27

Don't eat spaghetti is my answer to this conundrum.

I don't like it because it's a pita to eat.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/11/2013 16:28

herroyalnotness Oh oh oh! I've never met another spaghetti averse person

Cindy34 · 10/11/2013 16:31

YANBU as I snap frequently. Still long enough for kids to twirl on fork.

Bogeyface · 10/11/2013 16:33

If you are going to snap it then whats the point?! Just use penne!

I buy the Buitoni mega long stuff and I manage ok without snapping!

HSMMaCM · 10/11/2013 16:36

DH snaps it and it drives me mad. I like long spaghetti.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 10/11/2013 16:36

When dh and I first got together, I decided to make spag bol one day. I took time at lunchtime to walk to the shop, bought fancy, loooong spag and various other stuff. I defended my fancy, looooong spag against other shoppers, and carefully stashed it in my office till hometime.

I held it safely throughout the bus ride home, at rush hour. I carried it lovingly up the stairs to our wee flat.

And the bastard snapped it. Angry I damn near did LTB! Grin

MrsBeeZed · 10/11/2013 16:37

YANBU. I do this all the time; the snapping sound is incredibly satisfying and totally worth it.

Ilovexmastime · 10/11/2013 16:39

My name is Ilovexmastime and I am a spaghetti snapper.

Phew, that feels better :)

AnnoyingOrange · 10/11/2013 16:41

I snap it in half for the kids.

When I was a child we always had mega long pasta in a Blue wrapper

PatTheHammer · 10/11/2013 16:43

I snap now because of the kids, far easier than cutting it up with a bloody knife and fork when cooked. As soon as DS is old enough to perfect twirling, I will not bother anymore because it does make a mess.

You know what I hate, when sometimes, despite swirling around and adding blob of olive oil etc you get a random bunch of spag that sticks together in cooking. The slimy little cylinders stuck together just freak me out a bit. Doesn't happen every time, probably to do with the spaghetti make, amount of stirring, speed of cooking etc.

Mim78 · 10/11/2013 16:44

I turn it over after a few seconds. It doesn't take very long so it doesn't burn. I think it's nicer to have it long but it's up to you.
