to snap spaghetti in half before it goes in the saucepan

It doesn't fit if I don't!

My sister says I should stick it in, wait for the half that is in the water to soften enough, then bend it over so the rest goes in the hot water too.

However I don't like this because
a. the top bit sticking out the pan gets singed by the hot metal of the pan, which tastes bad
b. half the spaghetti is a bit more cooked than the other half

Stand it all up centre of the pan. Twist the clump and it will fall to the edges like an opening flower and sink under the water within a minute.

Bogeyface · 10/11/2013 17:10

following from Santiago

Bring pan back up to a rapid boil, place a lid on the pan and turn the pan off. Cooks the pasta without it sticking to the bottom of the pan so no need for stirring, which prevents the starch getting sticky.

somewheresomehow · 10/11/2013 17:12

I always snap ours as well , how the heck can it be bad luck its food fgs

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/11/2013 17:20

No snapping here and I lived in Italy [smug]. Actually I snap for DD but she is 2 so it doesn't count. If you need to snap, you aren't using a big enough pan or enough 'rolling boil' water.

You will end up with short, starchy spaghetti.

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 10/11/2013 17:20

You snapping barbarians!

You are not worthy of spaghetti

Buy penne instead

I never cook spaghetti, always use penne, spaghetti is far too difficult to eat!

Meow75 · 10/11/2013 17:25

We don't buy spaghetti either. It's twists, penne or far fallen all the way here.

CBA with spag.

MisguidedAngel · 10/11/2013 17:31

I always used to wind it all in. Then I saw Sophia Loren in a film circa 1965, and she snapped. What's good enough for her is good enough for me.

LustyBusty · 10/11/2013 17:32

I am LustyBusty and I snap spaghetti. Into threes. I hate hate hate having food on my face so slurping spaghetti is a horror for me. I do usually by penne, but when I do have spaghetti in, I three snap.

Allalonenow · 10/11/2013 17:38

Oh no, I never snap. You need a large pan and water on a rolling boil, twist as you push the spaghetti into the pan, the pasta will fan out and soften quickly into the water.
It's easier to eat longer spaghetti neatly than short broken bits.

digerd · 10/11/2013 17:40

I have always snapped it in 3 pieces. I cut it again when eating it as easier to bung in the mouth with a spoonGrin

YY to this!

I dont get why anyone would rather eat short spaghetti that wont twist properly around the fork, it is far messier than 2 or 3 strands of neatly twisted spaghetti!

liquidstate · 10/11/2013 17:58

Whatever I do my DH will cut it up a million times with a knife and fork before eating Hmm. I prefer a twirl so leave it whole and use a big pan.

ToysRLuv · 10/11/2013 18:06

I snap it, but really didn't think that anyone was that bothered about it.. It's only pasta! Confused

I cut it further into little pieces (with scissors) on DS's plate, so he can eat it with a spoon.

ToysRLuv · 10/11/2013 18:09

Also, maybe I am extraordinarily skilled at eating spaghetti, but never noticed any difference re . snapped vs. unsnapped..

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 10/11/2013 18:11

I just hold it and push down on it and it fans out nicely, no need to snap and no need to leave it overhanging to singe either.

HerRoyalNotness · 10/11/2013 18:15

bitoutofpractice Shock here I was thinking I was alone in the world! I eat every other type happily

mousmous · 10/11/2013 18:19

yabu
spaghetti need to be as long as possible.
bath afterwards esp for dh who is the messiest eater of us

mousmous · 10/11/2013 18:23

anyone else mix pasta shapes?
dsis nearly had a heart attack when she had to eat a penne/elbow/farfalle mix at mine once.

rosy71 · 10/11/2013 18:55

I've never heard of anyone snapping spaghetti before Shock. How do you manage to eat it????? Why not just have a different type of pasta of you don't want long spaghetti?

ToysRLuv · 10/11/2013 19:16

I mix pasta shapes if I have only a little bit of different ones left (not enough for everyone). Really couldn't care less.

Spaghetti is pretty long enough snapped in half. Saves all the dicking about by the stove waiting for all of it to bend/slide in. Bung in and leave the room for 10 mins - done!

ToysRLuv · 10/11/2013 19:17

To be honest I prefer fettucine..

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 10/11/2013 19:17

For those of you who've had a spaghetti snapping epiphany, what I'm about to say next should blow your minds: have you ever snapped a French stick in half to get it to fit into your shopping bag?

For what it's worth YANBU, I'm a snapper too.
