to be concerned re. what is going on re. immigration and population growth?

So many non-English voices, especially East Europeans, but so many different nationalities en masse it seems have moved here in the last 10-20 years - completely unprecedented historically. And in an already very over-crowded island.

Today I read Labour MP Frank Field say that the population increase due to immigration by 2031, i.e. less than 20 years, will be approximately 10 million and will require building something like seven new Birminghams! Or another London! Based on latest predictions in the papers today anyway.

Did Blair and Mandelson envisage this when they signed up for European Community rules on immigration and refugees? Or did they cynically not care because it meant cheap labour, cheap votes, increased profits (via membership of the European Community).

Did the architects of this policy not consider how it would affect housing, jobs and education and the resulting massive investment needed there, and the over-crowded population we have already.

I believe we have never been consulted or told anything honestly about what the consequences of EC membership was immigration-wise, if indeed there was ever any plan (doesn't seem to be, just a kind of opportunistic carpetbaggers philosophy approach of selling England by the pound).

I feel deceived and hoodwinked really. But are there any more positive thoughts on this? I find it v. depressing.

Doris, that is bollocks.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/11/2013 18:56

And I'm also pissed off for being deleted for pointing out racism.

And I think the HQ explanations on this thread are pretty poor, especially when a) the OP's posts are still standing (as are some of the racist ones) and b) the thread is still standing. I don't believe that because we've given some great examples of integration that it outweighs the horrible shit that's been spouted on here, not by a long shot.

This thread being left to stand and the wrong people being deleted is simply giving the message (to people like the OP) that 'hey, we'll let racism go on, but we'll delete PAs'. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

prettybird · 07/11/2013 19:01

It's 23 years since Thatcher was in power - how long do we blame her? Hmm

I speak as someone who had to walk out the room when she came on TV, was delighted when Labour won but ended up having the same visceral reaction to Blair especially with his brown-nosing to Bush Sad

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/11/2013 19:03

Oh God, I definitely blame Thatcher for everything. There's possible damp in my kitchen? Yep, Thatcher's fault! She pissed up my kitchen walls before she died, the Tory bitch.

YouTheCat · 07/11/2013 19:05

Yep - damp in my loo - Thatcher. Grin

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/11/2013 19:07

I think she's actually haunting my house Cat!

YouTheCat · 07/11/2013 19:08

She'll be haunting somewhere.

Probably Scargill. Grin Though tbh he is a twat.

Misspixietrix · 07/11/2013 19:12

It is 3 years since Labour was in Power yet we still blame them Hmm Do they have to wait another 20year then?

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/11/2013 19:12

Scargill was my hero when I was 11. I'm not even joking. My Dad was heavily involved in supporting the miners and I met Scargill at a gig. I was totally awestruck.

I was weird...

marzipanned · 07/11/2013 19:12

prettybird worry not, the majority of profits at investment banks come from activities like treasury services which are integral to the running of any developed economy i.e. money coming out of ATMs, people getting paid at the end of the month. It's exasperating when people spout racist nonsense and it's also exasperating when people start banker bashing without understanding the industry. The so-called casino element is relatively small though, if unchecked, disproportionately dangerous (e.g. 'London Whale' losses)

For which reason I entirely agree with you re government regulation. And Brown's boom and bust nonsense. In terms of toxic assets and deregulation, most seeds for the crisis were sewn during New Labour years.

But, yes, that's a different thread altogether..

Going back to the thing about English voices - sorry to be pedantic, but English is really an imported language, if we were truly upstanding patriot folk we'd all be talking Welsh.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 07/11/2013 19:26

My working class, son a miner DH agrees with you Mrs DV!

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 07/11/2013 19:28

that should be son of - I must remember to use all the words.

LurcioLovesFrankie · 07/11/2013 19:29

Well said Mrs DeVere!

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 07/11/2013 19:31

I have just come back to this thread and find it unbelievable that MN deleted my second post - which was 2 direct quotes from the OP - asking her to think about them.

The statements that the OP made, however, still stand.

Hmm Hmm Hmm

Chippednailvarnish · 07/11/2013 19:33

Welcome to MN Doris.

Hmm
trish5000 · 07/11/2013 19:34

It puzzles me that people dont learn quicker what is a personal attack and what isnt. It shouldnt take too many years to learn I dont think.

I would like to know which part of Britain can take extra people. From Laurie, it sounds like Hertfordshire can take more people. Anywhere else? If more people are coming and/or our population is going to increase, lets help out the planners.

I do think that parts at least of Southern Ireland feel very empty and could take a million or two people?

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/11/2013 19:34

Erm, I was a working-class, inner-city girl. I never thought immigrants were to blame for social housing, education or employment in my family or where I lived.

As I've said (many, many, many times now) upthread, the problem families where I grew up were the white thug families. The immigrants were pillars of the community!

eofa1 · 07/11/2013 19:35

Wiliamina, you defend a poster who thinks funny foreign languages are being spoken too much on the streets of Britain and claim there are too many immigrants despite admitting you can't be bothered to find any factual basis for this claim. That is at the dry least defending bigotry. And as far as illiteracy goes, my comment was a slightly snide aside because I was irritated by the stupidity of many posts on this thread. However, since you asked:

"also there has been influxes of communities at different times - the Norse, the Romans etc etc - but not a mix at this level however such is globalisation."

"Also there HAVE been influxes" or "also there has been AN influx" not "also there has been influxes.

Some punctuation after "level" would also be appropriate.

"The OP has a legitimate concern about resources not meeting needs of growing population and there are a million anecdotes of issues."

I mean, come on. Year 7s can construct a sentence better than that.

Chippednailvarnish · 07/11/2013 19:36

I'm also still waiting for AmyMumsnet to tell me what the definition of a racist is.

Maybe MN are short of staff? A few immigrants could probably solve the problem.

YouTheCat · 07/11/2013 19:36

Um Southern Ireland isn't part of the UK. Hmm

eofa1 · 07/11/2013 19:36

At the VERY least, to correct my own hideous typo.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 07/11/2013 19:38

"There was a good point made on the radio the other day about immigration. (Moral Maze last week)."

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Biscuit

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/11/2013 19:39

Oh good God. The last time England tried to put people into Ireland where they didn't belong, it didn't end well!

Can we not do that again? Ever. Please.
