So many non-English voices, especially East Europeans, but so many different nationalities en masse it seems have moved here in the last 10-20 years - completely unprecedented historically. And in an already very over-crowded island.

Today I read Labour MP Frank Field say that the population increase due to immigration by 2031, i.e. less than 20 years, will be approximately 10 million and will require building something like seven new Birminghams! Or another London! Based on latest predictions in the papers today anyway.

Did Blair and Mandelson envisage this when they signed up for European Community rules on immigration and refugees? Or did they cynically not care because it meant cheap labour, cheap votes, increased profits (via membership of the European Community).

Did the architects of this policy not consider how it would affect housing, jobs and education and the resulting massive investment needed there, and the over-crowded population we have already.

I believe we have never been consulted or told anything honestly about what the consequences of EC membership was immigration-wise, if indeed there was ever any plan (doesn't seem to be, just a kind of opportunistic carpetbaggers philosophy approach of selling England by the pound).

I feel deceived and hoodwinked really. But are there any more positive thoughts on this? I find it v. depressing.

Thanks PatriciaHolm, thought I'd stepped into the twilight zone for a minute there...

PatriciaHolm · 07/11/2013 00:56

Er; so when LC comments that she didn't see a non-white face she's a racist, but you saying "Didn't know where the fuck I was. Thought i had been transported somewhere else" is just fine?!!

Quite frankly it's far too late for me to be trying to discourse with someone who seems to have left their only braincell somewhere else. Don't suppose this thread will still be here in the morning, so bye all!

It will be odd, I think, when in twenty five years time the population of Holland is 80% white and the population of Britain is 70% non-white.

Why will it be odd? I don't actually see why this is an issue. It will be different, that's all.

lovely, I know ingatestone pretty well. I'll hazard a guess that you know fuck all about the impact of immigration in RL. Except for the fact that you don't like it.

feelingood · 07/11/2013 01:02

weegie absolutely - what you have just described is exactly what the research describes. National identity in other countries is related to specific factor pertaining to that country.

The reason why we hold stereotypes (which often gives rise to prejudices) or commonly held sterotypes is because it is more efficient to process (this is an in built congitive function realted to many aspects of processing all sorts of info) It is through greater experiences and taking the time to find out that we challenge and refine out stereotyping. Sadly some people are not aware they do this at all - eg nasty little cliques of mums standing judging others at school gates.

Misspixietrix · 07/11/2013 01:02

Yes I have actually. Next question.

Misspixietrix · 07/11/2013 01:06

taffleee re your Earlier comment about if they had some braincells at the front they would stand a chance at the next GE. You do realise they are not a political party don't you? The Ex Leader Tommy Robinson said so himself.

Misspixietrix · 07/11/2013 01:09

MiniMonty.I wonder what the figure is for those that emigrated that year...

feelingood · 07/11/2013 01:20

In economic terms emigration figure does not matter that much if they are qualified in a field we have a shortage of e.g. midwives.

Whereas immigrant workers from less well developed economies are less likey (please note I say less likely) to be qualified to the same standard. The levels of workers in given occupations matters in economic terms. Just the same as it does to the recipient country of the emigratee from UK.

VeryStressedMum · 07/11/2013 01:23

Tafleee even the founder of the EDL left as he realised just what a bunch of twats they actually are.

Mylovelyboy wouldn't have any of these views if she had a council house. Then she wouldn't give a flying fuck if the country sank into the sea.

BaronessBomburst · 07/11/2013 01:34

MiniMonty It will be odd, I think, when in twenty five years time the population of Holland is 80% white and the population of Britain is 70% non-white.

You ever been to Holland? Less than 50% of the population of Rotterdam are 'indigenous' - for want of a better word. It's considered to be so much of a problem that when you start to type 'Rotterdam' into Google it brings up 'percentage of foreigners' as the first automatic option. (in Dutch that is)

And I live here and I'm not Dutch, so I'll kick myself out now, shall I?

Has anyone referenced this yet?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24813467

I heard the same stats around ten years ago so it is pleasing to know that the same pattern is continuing.

Basically immigrants more than pay their way and are net contributors, so without immigrants the UK would be in a very sorry state indeed.

The magic of London and Birmingham and Manchester etc IS that there are so many different languages and cultures and nationalities (because one does not mean the other) all generally bumping along just fine. I love it here in NZ but am concerned that my child thinks that the world is made up of only two kinds of people - pink ones and slightly brown ones, all of whom wear gumboots and most of whom speak one or at best, two languages.

So why did I leave - because it rains a lot in the UK.

Toadinthehole · 07/11/2013 02:57

OP, Mumsnet en masse has given you the benefit of its collective wisdom. Immigrants are good, beneficial and necessary because Britain will always need people to clean its toilets.

Dolcelatte · 07/11/2013 05:33

I was interested in the thread near the beginning that says that, in fact, only about 2-3% of the UK is built on. When you fly in, you can see that this is still a green island, although on the ground there does seem to be pressure on resources and some areas are very busy, particularly in London and the south east.

Part of the problem is that there are so many cars, which is a result of economic progress, but results in motorways such as the M25 being clogged for hours at a time.

Immigration was and is inevitable as the world gets smaller and economies develop. It is natural to fear change, however, and it is understandable that people are afraid of mass immigration. It is not being racist or bigoted to have those fears - despite what Gordon Brown may have thought! I agree that some politicians turn this fear to their advantage, such as UKIP, but this is an age old tactic of 'divide and rule'.

Given that we have a growing population for multiple reasons - and people living longer is certainly one - there is no point in moaning about it. We need more houses, better roads and railways (which really ought to be renationalised), hospitals, schools etc

I find it depressing that threads like this always promote such insults and abuse towards anyone being brave enough to post a thread like OP's. She said she was looking for positives, so why not give her some, and there are plenty, as some already have eg the link to the article with the 7 or 8 misconceptions about immigration. Instead it's the same old predictable bashing of people such as OP for being racist or, even worse, shock horror, she might even read the Daily Mail!

currentbuns · 07/11/2013 05:52

Totally agree, Dolcelatte
Haven't read the whole thread, but squiffyagain's post at the bottom of the first page is a perfect example of the sort of nastiness - masquerading as a moral superiority that some Mumsnetters seem to strive for.
Why is it impossible for some people to have a calm, measured discussion of this topic?

katese11 · 07/11/2013 07:05

Wow, this thread has taken a turn for the worse since I went to bed. mylovely I live in inner London, as you can probably tell from my username. We don't have people crapping in the parks. What point exactly were you trying to make?

(Oh and I live on a huge council estate, recently faired on a channel 4 documentary about immigrants struggling to learn English. .. clearly I am in the eye of the immigration storm Grin )

Why on earth would that be "odd"?

What is wrong or different about non-white people?
