Was at the gym on Friday having a great workout. Suddenly the smell of chips is over whelming. Hate the smell of fried food but in the Gym. Instructor was having his lunch, just really pissed me off really wanted to say something. AIBU?

Not at all, everyone should consider your personal food phobias when eating. Let me know where you are, and I'll ensure that all fried food establishments are closed as you pass.

ReturnofSaturn · 04/11/2013 14:39

Ha! This just happened to
me earlier today, the instructor was eating chips when I walked in. He also was one day last week too.

Judyandherdreamofhorses · 04/11/2013 14:40

And you're still bothered about it three days later? Wow. You seriously hate chips!

Blossomflowers · 04/11/2013 14:54

Don't be stupid flat I have no problem with fried food, just not in Gym, yuk, does not seem to go together somehow promoting health and fitness and all. Any judy re 3 days I want to know if people think it is ok so say anything if it happens again.

Isildur · 04/11/2013 14:58

Is there a no-food rule in the gym? If not, say nothing.

I wouldn't say anything anyway, as I'd only be spending time in the gym to burn off all the chips I'd eaten already.

WorraLiberty · 04/11/2013 14:58

It's only ok to say something if you want to come across as quite neurotic about chips.

They're not the devil's spawn. We can stay fit and healthy and have a plate of chips now and then.

ilovepowerhoop · 04/11/2013 15:00

you can buy chips in our local sports centre!

mummymeister · 04/11/2013 15:01

I have a problem with employers who don't provide their employees somewhere other than their desks to eat lunch at. surely he/she should not be eating in the office but in the canteen or rest room. isn't this the issue. I would feel the same whatever they were eating. just don't think people should eat at their desks at work when they deal with/are open to the public.

OTheHugeManatee · 04/11/2013 15:02

YABU. So you think the gym should be a sacred environment where everybody only consumes wheatgrass and salad? What if the guy is marathon training? He might have just burned 3,000 calories in an epic workout.

I think you sound precious and a bit mad Grin

OTheHugeManatee · 04/11/2013 15:03

On the other hand, if the person eating chips in the gym turned up in their tracksuit, flailed about on a cross-trainer for 15 minutes and then chowed down on a monster portion I would Judge. Massively Grin

MaidOfStars · 04/11/2013 15:03

Yes, YABVU.

TheCraicDealer · 04/11/2013 15:09

I really want some chips now.

Blossomflowers · 04/11/2013 15:09

I am not judging him for eating chips, I eat chips FFS. But it is a small private gym and the smell of chips in a enclosed space is not that pleasant. Some of you missing the point I think.

complexnumber · 04/11/2013 15:10

I don't think you ABU.

I think it is quite inconsiderate to eat smelly food in an environment where everyone else is doing something other than eating. Of course I am assuming the trainer had somewhere else to go.

I also hate people eating smelly stuff on public transport.

The point being that you're being massively precious about someone eating something that you don't like the smell of in a place that both of you have a perfect right to be?

Come on. Show a little tolerance for other people.

OTheHugeManatee · 04/11/2013 15:15

Hmm, small enclosed space, smelly food. I can see your point a little bit there. I'm often on the 22:10 vomit comet out of Kings Cross on a Thursday and I could frankly MURDER the pie-eaters that storm that train in their tens hundreds. Grim. Plan your fucking day better, don't sit behind me eating your vile lips-and-arseholes pie and emanating that beefy smell at me.

Still, it was only chips, OP. Imagine if it'd been a Cornish pasty Grin

Blossomflowers · 04/11/2013 15:15

Thank you comlex Exactly it id the smelly food thing not just chips. Again I love chips for the record. He ordered the food from the restaurant across the hall so not sure why he could not have gone there to eat tbh, surely he is entitled to a lunch break.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 04/11/2013 15:24

Can't you smell it from the restaurant anyway?

Blossomflowers · 04/11/2013 15:29

Ok then flat so just to put this into perspective if you for example paid money to go to a spa, beauty salon and the therapist started chomping on Curry whilst waiting for your treatment to complete you would be perfectly happy with that would you? I am paying to go to a place of health and fitness with lovely views only it suddenly smelt of rank fried food.
othe Vomit comet LOL

The two aren't comparable. A gym is not a nice-smelling place, even if you're paying through the nose for it. I imagine the smell of fried food can only improve a place that smells of socks and sweaty lycra.

I am paying to go to a place of health and fitness with lovely views only it suddenly smelt of rank fried food.

Let's hope the smell of chips and common folk didn't spoil the smell of armpit and the amazing views.

WorraLiberty · 04/11/2013 15:34

I still think you'd BU to say anything

I'm sure the poor guy would rather eat in the canteen if he could.

And someone eating curry wouldn't affect the outcome of a beauty treatment.

People have to eat during their working day and if they're short staffed for example, they can't always eat in staff rooms.

Writerwannabe83 · 04/11/2013 15:35

YABU - to the point where I was laughing inside Grin

NorbertDentressangle · 04/11/2013 15:40

YABVU - everyone knows that someone elses chips always smell nicer than any you ever buy and eat yourself.

Therefore you should have just enjoyed the smell knowing that it was pointless buying any for the reason I've already mentioned. In a roundabout way he's helped you !

FreakinRexManningDay · 04/11/2013 15:40

Beats the smell of a sweaty scrotum.
