Was at the gym on Friday having a great workout. Suddenly the smell of chips is over whelming. Hate the smell of fried food but in the Gym. Instructor was having his lunch, just really pissed me off really wanted to say something. AIBU?

You should definitely complain.

Then come back and tell us how it went! Grin

farrowandbawl · 04/11/2013 17:35

Our gym is a few doors away from a cafe - the smell of bacon sandwiches tests even the strongest person.

ICameOnTheJitney · 04/11/2013 17:44

YABU! Where will it end!? No bread...full of carbs....no coffee...full of fattening milk! Get a life OP!

APartridgeAmongThePigeons · 04/11/2013 17:54

I do not want to see my trainer chowing on chips

hazelnutlatte · 04/11/2013 18:01

My gym has a bar - I can run on the treadmill whilst watching people have a pint of lager and steak and chips. I can't smell it from the gym floor though, which I think makes all the difference! I would think it was a bit weird if one of the gym staff was eating chips on the gym floor - did the member of staff not have anywhere else he could go and eat? If its a small gym maybe he was the only person on duty so can't leave for lunch.

comedycentral · 04/11/2013 18:02

I'm so hungry reading this thread on train home from work

Salmotrutta · 04/11/2013 18:32

I never knew there was a Food Etiquette at gyms!

because I wouldn't be seen dead in a gym

I do however know the not-so-delightful pong of school gyms - chips would be a marked improvement.

I'd imagine other gyms are just as fragrant as school premises.

WooWooOwl · 04/11/2013 19:10

YANBU. I'm surprised they allow food in the gym, as in the same room where all the equipment is.

But if they're going to allow it, people should be considerate enough not to eat food that smells.

Layl77 · 04/11/2013 19:16

Would it have been the same if he was eating a hot bowl of broccoli soup?

Feminine · 04/11/2013 19:20

Are you quite sure you were not tempted?

nancydrew · 04/11/2013 20:37

YANBU! It is a workplace not a lunch room! I work in an office environment (not open to public) but we are not allowed to eat smelly food at our desks. It is inappropriate.

ICameOnTheJitney · 04/11/2013 20:51

Well people are now separating the issues....OP is it the chips which bothered you or the eating? Would it have been better if he'd been eating a healthy soup for instance?

PenguinDancer · 04/11/2013 20:54

Fuck that, I like a good bag o' chips after a work out. I deserve it! I'm hungry! Go chips!

ALittleStranger · 04/11/2013 20:57

If the gym is that small and poorly ventilated than surely the smell of sweaty people is offputting enough. Maybe you need to find a nice airy gym?

And what's a private gym, is that a cut above Virgin Active etc?

nancydrew · 04/11/2013 21:02

I have never seen anyone eat in the gym. I have seen someone eat a banana/chocolate in the changing rooms after a class. TBF I can't imagine anyone having a bowl of soup in the gym so is that a non sequitur?

VonHerrBurton · 04/11/2013 22:54

I agree with you OP :)

Im not remotely precious but the smell of strong food - be it chips, curries, fish - whatever, is very unprofessional in a business setting. I hate beauty salons that smell of anything other than, well, lovely beauty products. I hate it when clothes shops smell like KFC...

Gyms are bound to be prone to the smell of sweat, trainers and peoples' socks, but its a gym!

Eat something non-smelly on your break, or eat out!

bubalou · 04/11/2013 23:37

If I could eat a donut on the treadmill and get away with it I would Grin

manicinsomniac · 04/11/2013 23:40

YANBU. Food shouldn't be allowed on a gym floor at all and certainly not hot food that smells. Yuck.

Absolutely the wrong thread will report myself and say three hail marys....apologies Blush

VonHerrBurton · 05/11/2013 07:45

...
That's hilarious in this context, Caruthers!

Sounds like you're sticking up for the Chip - Eater husband a little bit too strenuously!

Gileswithachainsaw · 05/11/2013 07:54

Yabu. Do you have any idea whatnots like to work somewhere where there's no where to eat your lunch.

Trainers have to eAt too, and his chips smell better than all the sweat and BO and fart that he has to smell all day dealing with you lot.

We aren't meant to eat at the counter at work. However if we didn't no one would eat because theirs either no time or no one else there or it's too busy. Fuck that are the staff doing 11/12/13/14 hour shifts not gonna eat all day.

Oh and customers can eat what the hell they want when they want.

I'd feel sorry for the guy tbh. Sure he'd rather have a nice break in a warm staff room where there's a kettle or a tv.

GrandstandingBlueTit · 05/11/2013 07:59

Well, just say something next time. I'm sure you'll feel loads better for getting it off your chest.

This is Really Important, after all.

fanjofarrow · 05/11/2013 08:22

Eh?

This is not only unreasonable, it's insane!

songlark · 05/11/2013 08:40

I could think of much worse things to get het up about. The only thing that the smell of chips does to me is make me want some. It's no big deal, leave the poor man alone, yabu.
