Animals vs humans

AIBU to think if faced with choosing a pet over a human (even if a stranger), you should choose the human?

The idea was brought up in another thread and put in life or death situation. Building on fire contains your pet and a stranger. You could only save one, who would it be?

I had a dog, Ralph, I cried my heart out when he died 3 years ago. The only dog I wasn't scared of! But I can't imagine leaving a person to die instead, no matter how my heart would break.

I would try and save all. Yes. No question.

Spider7 · 02/11/2013 19:31

More than one said something like that Princess? Wow, what a nice bunch of strangers! Some clearly are nice, some are..... No I shall be better than that. Wow, just wow! Jesus Ivyfairy, you really are trying to be obtuse aren't you? We have already said we would tell the fireman to save our pet over us. Therefore we totally understand someone wanting to rescue their pet over us. I may not be happy about being left behind but I would not hunt you down to kill you should I survive, nor would I want my loved ones doing so! I would understand. You save your pet over me, save your child over me too..... it's all the same to me.how can you not get that this is how it is for some of us. Princess.... I blame you for pulling me back in lol! ;-)

Ivyfairy · 02/11/2013 19:31

You'll no doubt disagree, but I wonder if you might change your mind with the flames approaching Wink

I think I found it most shocking (was it here or the other thread) where somebody said they would still choose a dog over a baby, or young child. So leaving somebody utterly vulnerable with no chance of getting out, when compared with the dog.

I'm afraid some people refuse to accept that others can and do feel differently to them. I'm pleased, however, to find some thoughtful posters on both sides of the debate. I may have a different viewpoint but I appreciate those who have been civil about it.

If all you can do is throw out threats and poor taste mental health slurs, your opinion of me matters to me about as much as my animals do to you.

Spider7 · 02/11/2013 19:32

Wasp?! Wtf?! Going back a page!

fifi669 · 02/11/2013 19:33

"I don't have children so yes, I would save a dog (or any animal) over a child"

Hamster? Fruit fly? Wasp? Goldfish? Mouse?

Response:
Curlew yes actually - any of them.

OP posts:
curlew · 02/11/2013 19:33

Yep. servelan did. Or a fruit fly. I hope she is taking the piss, but I suspect not.

UrgentNews · 02/11/2013 19:34

trish5000 if you would save someone in the house who was trying to hurt your DCs over an animal that was loyal and devoted to you, then I think you need take a step back and have some Wine. That's like saving Jimmy Saville over Lassie FFS.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 19:34

Spider7

Sorry! Grin yes, a poster also agreed with curlew. I'm too lazy to go back and find it though

UrgentNews · 02/11/2013 19:35

Ivyfairy at one point my dog was a puppy in a crate, equally as helpless.

Ivyfairy · 02/11/2013 19:35

Obtuse, I don't think so.

"We have already said we would tell the fireman to save our pet over us"

Very noble, if empty, gesture. I'd like to see the fire fighter who would comply with your wishes.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 19:36

Ok, I do not agree with a fruit fly/wasp over a child. I don't have an emotional bond with either of those creatures... I don't think I ever would. Confused

Spider7 · 02/11/2013 19:36

Oh god Living! So very sorry to read that! I missed that somehow! I don't know how to do the smilies & flowers on here but lots of flowers, sympathy & wine or whatever spirit of your choice. How awful! I feel so angry for you right now!

livingzuid · 02/11/2013 19:36

Ah but Ivy in my hypothetical universe all is possible! My dog first then me accompanied by a hunky fireman to carry me around. And in same universe my dog would save both me and the child and be hero dog of the year. So all is well :)

Ivyfairy · 02/11/2013 19:37

"Ivyfairy at one point my dog was a puppy in a crate, equally as helpless"

As helpless as a baby! For goodness sake Hmm

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 02/11/2013 19:37

I think the debate is when does life become important.

Sorry for that outlash there, but my dog has helped me and the DCs through a lot. Sorry.

livingzuid · 02/11/2013 19:38

And we've also acknowledged in the real world the likelyhood of said hunky fireman rescuing us after our dog would not happen. Although I would ask!

"Ok, I do not agree with a fruit fly/wasp over a child. I don't have an emotional bond with either of those creatures... I don't think I ever would. confused"

Because they're not luffly and fluffy, presumably.

pianodoodle · 02/11/2013 19:40

"And saying you wold kill someone's innocent pet makes you look like a dick."

Just wondering what saying you would save the life of a dog before you saved ther life of a child makes you look like?

Crazy? Monstrous? - but curlew you missed the post that tells us we aren't allowed to judge them on that particular viewpoint. It makes us smug, apparently Grin

Spikeytree · 02/11/2013 19:40

Seriously, STOP the mental health slurs. Say you think it is wrong, don't question people's sanity.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 19:41

No, Ivy I was pretty clear in my justification I said...

"I don't have an emotional bond with either of those creatures"
