AIBU?

to keep the expensive stuff for me and let the kids use the normal stuff?

There are few things in life that are reserved for me alone.

However, I buy the DDs the normal bog standard chocolate spread for their weekend breakfast pancake treat and keep the lovely Cadbury stuff for me alone, on a high shelf.

as long as the children like the chocolate spread they're getting just fine, i don't think you're being unreasonable. Other mothers do the same with things like naice bubble bath because why risk having your DC sink eight quids worth of posh stuff in one go like i did as a child when my mother made the error of letting me add my own when they'd be equally happy with matey? my mum also still hides the expensive granola from my DP when we go to stay because his idea of a 'portion' is about 5 times hers haha :D

Can I be your DC ? I hate cadburys , love the cheaper stuff.

I don't think YABU if your DC don't mind.

I recently bought Asda smart price chocolate spread for all of us as it was much cheaper. It's disgusting AFAIAC, but DS likes it. So I bought some any tells, which I eat and DS eats the smart price one. He is quite happy with that, although if he asked for Nutella I wouldn't say no.

I don't buy the DC cheaper versions of most things though, we usually all eat the same.

Hmmm. My mum used to do the opposite of this- ie offer dad and me our choice of whatever was available first, before taking what was left herself. So we might get the naice new ham while she got a left over end of ham from the previous packet. I noticed and it made me uncomfortable- but if your kids are young maybe they wouldn't notice anyway?

On balance though I think what my mum did was more 'normal' and so I think YABU to have nice stuff yourself that the kids don't have. Sorry.

I have the wine and the kids have to lump it with squash....

The children do not share my manuka honey, nor my Ben and Jerry's phish food. They have to make do with normal honey and Cornish ice cream or some such.

YANBU! Can't believe the preciousness on this thread TBH.

It surely depends if they are old enough to notice / care. My parents always allowed me what they were having (within reason obvs, not booze & fags) when growing up at an age appropriate time.

I'll never forget going to a retirement dinner with my parents aged around 12 where I ordered off the adult menu (I was pretty much my adult size) and my friends were made to order off the kids menu so got mini plates of nuggets and chips. They were 11 and 13 respectively, both male and while I don't recall how tall, well over 5' 4" for sure (tall family). I found this distinctly odd but they and their (oddball) mother all berated me for ordering 'adult food' that my own parents were perfectly happy for me to order

You are being perfectly reasonable, OP! What they don't know about doesn't harm them, does it? The children don't know a different kind of spread exists and are perfectly happy with what they''ve got!

Also, we are all so self-sacrificing these days towards our children, that it's quite right to redress the balance slightly with some special adult treats! Good for you.

YANBU - I have nice chocolate, ice cream, biscuits and bath stuff. DS is more than happy with freddos, Walls, malted milks and Matey.

Well I would say that nutella is not a cheapo spread, and compared to that cadbury is shite Grin

Therefore you are depriving yourself not the kids Wink Grin

Can't believe that some posters think YABU.
Hardly depriving them . Not exactly Oliver Twist, is it?

My girls caught me out hogging the quilted toilet paper while they got the normal kind. In my defence they use twice as much as I do anyway. At least twice as much.

If it's good enough for me, then it's good enough for my kids.

Grin Tired.

My DDs are 9 and 12. The 12 year old orders from the adult menu if we go out, and so will the 9 year old at one particular restaurant where there's nothing on the children's menu that she likes.

No, YANBU. My stepson can't tell the difference between bog standard cheddar and really good cheese. Am I going to allow him to put £5 worth of artisan Lancashire on a jacket potato or hand him the basic cheddar? You know the answer.

I hide my nice food stuff.

Good tip, buy a box of cereal your DC will not like ( muesli in this house) and hide it in there.

My children get alot more things than me there are 2 things that I don't buy all often that are mine B&J ice cream and Thornton chocolate bars.

YANBU.

I do this with yoghurt.

That's probably the only thing now they are older, but I'm sure when they were younger we did it with more.

Am weirdly tempted to do a blind taste test now to see if they can tell the difference. I'm pretty certain they can't. Will do that tomorrow (they'll think it's their birthday having random offerings of chocolate spread!) and report back.

They know my stuff is my favourite and that I'd rather they use the other stuff if we have some. There's never been an 'oh, but I don't like the other one'.

They make a lot of their own things and DD1 in particular needs an eye kept on her as far as portion control as she'd apply it with a large spoon rather than spreading some on with a knife.

It's never occurred to e to have a mine and them treats!

I just share out what we have!

I don't think I'd do it with food, but definitely with toiletries! I guess that there is already a divide of food between DH/me and DS already just because of his egg allergy, so seems mean to restrict him more.

YANBU.

I only really like blackberry jam.

DH and the DC like any jam.

So I was most annoyed when I bought some blackberry and DH polished it off - without letting me know it was empty so I only found out when I went to put some on my toast, grr!

Took me right back to flat sharing days, coming in from work looking forward to something and finding some bugger had scoffed it.

I now hide it.

If we had run out of jam except my secret stash, I'd share it as I am sure you would if you ran out of nutella.

So carry on as you are, I say Grin
