Anyway OP. YANBU. Why can't he adopt the sensible, conventional tea drinking rhythm of slurp-gulp? (quietly of course)
Have a word.

BeanoNoir · 19/10/2013 07:26

I don't think I could drink tea like that if I tried

InsultingBadger · 19/10/2013 07:44

I am so happy it's not just me and the is an actual name for all of this!

Crisps and apples seem to be a theme. I used to commute to London and would get the rage daily.

Eating noises are bad, and I used to get so angry at my mum breathing through her nose when she ate

Ha ha Jitney - the joys of MN!

Ok. I just tried (and failed) to do the three stage swallow insultingbadger I manged two.
It's not comfortable and it requires too much concentration. For a relaxing tea experience imho.

Either your DP is demonstrating controlling behaviour (the "holding" of the tea in his mouth and "rationing" a third of the tea "load" to each swallow) Halloween Wink and doing it to annoy you, or he has poor impulse control (the inability to avoid excessive initial tea "intake") Halloween Wink

Either way, both of these are "red flags" and you should LTB Halloween Grin.
Or just refuse to take tea with him.

Iaintdunnuffink · 19/10/2013 08:12

I sit next to someone at work who drinks it cold. I make him one and he's still sipping it 2 hours later.

InsultingBadger · 19/10/2013 08:15

Ghost, I know! I've tried it too and it's impossible! But dd can do it and drinks both ways.

I asked him once to see if he could just sip and swallow it which he just about could but found it unpleasant. He can gulp cold drinks though in one mouthful.. I don't get it!

Tried with my mochaccino. Three is my limit. Grin but it's not enjoyable.

TheGhostofAmandaClarke · 19/10/2013 08:44

I have an ex who used to go: bite toast- half chew toast - slurp tea - chew tea/ toast combo - slurp more tea - swallow. BOAK.

ICameOnTheJitney · 19/10/2013 08:44

The talkers who pause to drink remind me of my friend who smokes when she's on the phone to me...and when she takes a drag mid sentence, she goes "Mmm" to signal she's not done talking yet.... Angry "So Jitney...I got a lovely top MMM it was green with stripes and fittes great...MMM and then the dog threw up on it MMM"

Angry
FancyPuffin · 19/10/2013 08:45

Dh is the worlds worst tea drinker.

He starts out with a normal cup of tea.

Pours half of it away.

Adds cold water.

Glugs it down like juice while making a weird regurgitation noise Hmm

I believe this could be grounds for divorce.

TheGhostofAmandaClarke · 19/10/2013 08:49

Jitney Halloween Grin Halloween Angry
Imagine if someone did that in a pub. With the smoking ban. Just wait there while I pop out for a fag, I'm not done with my sentence yet.

I can do that mouthful into several swallows thing, just tried it. Its really not hard. Not sure if i do it usually without noticing and am annoying people everywhere i go! Am surprised its such a bit deal to some people!

I can't stand repeat noises, so tapping or one of my dc making the same noise or saying the same thing over and over again. Or shrill noises (again the dc).I have no patience for it and i get rather cross. Or mumbling. Or shouting. Confused

JustThisOnceOrTwiceOrThrice · 19/10/2013 09:06

Or sudden unnecessary excessively loud laughing.

I have issues.

Or knives scraping plates. Or nail biting noise. Or anyone messing with my environment eg. my dad who will sit next to me and put his arm behind me, pushing the sofa cushion i am leaning on forward slightly at the top meaning i am pushed into a very very slightly weird position. He did this constantly when i was a child and did it again when i saw him last week and it all came flooding back!

(goes to book therapist)

Doll. A pint glass in tired gulps?! Ha ha

JustThisOnceOrTwiceOrThrice · 19/10/2013 09:11

THREE gulps!

SirChenjin · 19/10/2013 09:15

DH rinses his mouth with any drink he takes before swallowing it. I swear to God, I will kill him one of these days.

NationMcKinley · 19/10/2013 09:19

My name is Nation and I have misophonia Smile

See, this is what I love about MN: I have always thought that I'm either massively intolerant or mad, now I realise it's a genuine neurological condition. My issues are mainly with eating noises, they make me hugely stabby. Unfortunately my DM and DF are two of the worst loud - eating offenders. I can't stand the way DH eats cereal either. He takes a giant mouthful (which in itself is annoying) then sorts of pokes the rest about with the tip of his spoon while he masticates that mouthful Angry. My best friend utters little involuntary 'mmmms' when she eats something she likes - now that really triggers The Rage. Another friend of mine does the fork flick thing and always always bashes her teeth with cutlery. I went travelling with her and nearly stabbed her on a daily basis Blush. Sudden loud noises like chairs being dragged over hard flooring also make me stabby. This is a bit niche, but secretions in tracheostomy tubes also give me The Rage. There are more but I think I've gone on enough.

I feel so much better for that!! According to Dr Google, many misphonics (?) also have a degree of synesthesia. I see the days of the week as colours and some tastes are also smells iyswim. Anyone else have that? Smile

ohmymimi · 19/10/2013 09:29

My XDP eats with mouth open, as did his DM, and he exhales with extreme gusto after every sip of a drink. Love really is blind ( and deaf, apparently). Beyond annoyingly irritatingly annoying once the rosy glow faded. Eating and drinking noises on TV etc - ugh. I am relieved I'm not quite the eracible, intolerant that I had assumed and it's a syndrome with a name!

TheGhostofAmandaClarke · 19/10/2013 09:35

Oh good grief SirChenjin my DH does that with wine. Really very intensely irritating.
Also yy to finding tapping and repetitive noises annoying.
And don't get me started on whistling. It's so piercing and intrusive.
Also, snoring (obviously) and that heavy breathing thing when people are eating. Like chewing makes them out of breath. Just stop eating for a bit you greedy bastard!
