I thought it would be discussed on here, as it is all everyone was talking about at work. I guess not many MumsNetters are into football, but I was interested in the opinons of fellow MumsNetters about this.

This comes down to whether you think he should not use certain words because others have misused those same words You think yes and I disagree. I think I would feel patronised.

Dawndonnaagain · 18/10/2013 15:50

Of course it makes sense. You deal with it all the time.
I find it sad that you don't think he did anything wrong, but you don't have to live with being called names, do you? You see, if Hodgson didn't use the language, others wouldn't. If filters both ways.

Lweji · 18/10/2013 15:52

Aren't both players black?

If the one throwing the ball was white and the one scoring black (or vice versa Grin, I could see racism, if they are both black or white, then it's just an analogy to a silly joke.

NotYoMomma · 18/10/2013 15:54

dawn what do you actually want from him though? he has apologised and him and player have said no offence wad meant or taken.

it was a joke about a monkey in space. in any other environment it woukd be fine, in football it would be a bit of a gaffe which is why he apologised immediately and since but you are going ott

Dawndonnaagain · 18/10/2013 15:56

I'm fine with Hodgson apologising. It's the attitudes on here with which I am not quite so fine.
Oh, and unless you have been the victim of a racist attack, verbal and physical, don't tell me I'm ott. Hmm

ColderThanAWitchsTitty · 18/10/2013 15:57

Is it so hard for some of you to not refer to people as monkeys? Really?

Like it actually bothers you, you can't do that?

ColderThanAWitchsTitty · 18/10/2013 15:57

I've never once felt the need to call someone a monkey in my daily life.

NotYoMomma · 18/10/2013 16:01

I dont think people do want to go out of their way to call people monkeys? one poster has said they call their daughter a monkey Confused

ColderThanAWitchsTitty · 18/10/2013 16:04

several posters have said they don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to refer to someone as a monkey if they aren't being racist.

Just don't call humans monkeys. We know calling humans pigs and cows is rude so we avoid that.. lets just add monkey to the list and be done with it.

We'll all survive

TheBigJessie · 18/10/2013 16:08

Dawndonna

I don't despise Hodgson for all this. I think he's handled it well, and he genuinely didn't think of the other implications as he tried to come up with a good way to explain the plan for the next half!

But there's no need for a lot of the reactions that are supposedly in support of him!

EldritchCleavage · 18/10/2013 16:11

Well said, BigJessie.

BeCool · 18/10/2013 16:12

where is this list?

TheBigJessie · 18/10/2013 16:12

I would support a ban on monkey, just to get rid of those t-shirts for small boys with monkey on, that infest children's clothing sections!

It's never cute golden marmoset; just cheeky monkey. Variety is evidently not the spice of life according to high street clothes designers!

TheBigJessie · 18/10/2013 16:21

Cow, pig, bitch, sheep all have adverse meanings!

limitedperiodonly · 18/10/2013 16:34

I've no idea whether Roy Hodgson is racist. I imagine not. I've no proof but I just like to think the best of people.

But you don't use the word monkey when referring to a black person. It's inept and open to misinterpretation, whether innocent or malicious.

How fucking difficult is that to understand? And how difficult is it to understand that someone who wants to keep in with the England manager might say he wasn't bothered?

Next thing someone will say that Barack Obama has a nice suntan. Because he does.

Oh, hang on a minute, Silvio Berlusconi did say that.

BackOnlyBriefly · 18/10/2013 16:37

I think some of these posts are ott too.

Sorry if you have been the victim of racism. There is never a justification for that.

However I reserve the right to think that someone's attitude is biased and an indication of their inability to think clearly. They are still entitled to their opinion, but I'm entitled to think it's nonsense.

As for calling someone a monkey in daily life I'm fairly sure I've called my grandchildren that. They used to run to me all excited and climb up me like little monkeys and throw their arms round my neck.

Worse! it's just occured to me that one of my grandchildren would nowadays be referred to as mixed race. I never made the connection before because I don't think of my grandchildren as 'white1, white2, white3 and mixedrace1. I never saw the need to keep in mind someone's skin color until I came to MN and had it explained to me how important it was and how you must be careful to treat them accordingly.

EldritchCleavage · 18/10/2013 16:43

I never saw the need to keep in mind someone's skin color until I came to MN and had it explained to me how important it was and how you must be careful to treat them accordingly

Do please bear in mind, that some of us are of the same fundamental view, only other people keep referring to our colour in deeply insulting terms so we never quite have the luxury of forgetting about it.

As as for Sorry if you have been the victim of racism...However, cringe.

BackOnlyBriefly · 18/10/2013 16:49

Cringe all you like. You'll get treated equally by me whether you like it or not.

TheBigJessie · 18/10/2013 17:06

limited makes an excellent point. I'm ashamed I didn't realise it myself. The man is not in a good position to object.

TheBigJessie · 18/10/2013 17:08

Dawn, put a helmet on first. We need you uninjured!
