to think that people don't judge others on their choice of curry?

Was having a conversation with a friend today.

She reckons that people look down on people who choose mild curry as though that is the wimp's choice. (NB my words not hers)

And that liking progressively hotter curries is a rite of passage that you have to go through, almost like a qualification.

I mean, what if you just don't like spicy food?!?

NB I ask this as a curry wimp - I go for the korma every time.

I judge people who have chips with curry sauce (but then I judge people who put gravy on their chips) but never on the heat of their curry choice, even I'm not that judgemental.

LeGavrOrf · 16/10/2013 20:02

Christ I judge my daughter for liking kormas, what kind of bitch does that make me? Grin

She can't handle any kind of spice so I always end up making two bloody curries.

slightlysoupstained · 16/10/2013 20:04

overmydeadbody Thanks for the chilli weaning tip Smile

Had been wondering when to "spice it up" for DS, he happily ate my Thai curry (with moderate amounts of chilli but the coconut milk tones it down) but will spit out the lovely samosas from the corner shop.

All the "you must introduce them to a range of stuff while they're small or they'll only eat beige food forever" had me worried I was behind the curve...

LeGavrOrf · 16/10/2013 20:05

I absolutely love Goan curries, vindaloo types, but most of the Indians around here are Bangladeshi and so their curries are very generic. It pisses me off that I live in a multicultural city and there is not one decent curry house. So I go to the Asian grocers buy the ingredients for a few quid and make my own.

SeaSickSal · 16/10/2013 20:06

The only thing I judge is people who won't try anything spicy at all, and always have the korma.

I think people who don't eat spicy foods are often boring, close minded people, provincial and a bit backward, not open to new experiences, old-fashioned, stuck in their ways, fuddy duddy.

It just smacks of a whole attitude of preferring plain boring unexciting things and having the plain boring unexciting personality to match.

juneybean · 16/10/2013 20:06

I always feel bad for ordering tikka masala but it is my favourite.

GoldenGytha · 16/10/2013 20:09

When I used to go to Indian restaurants with XH, I always ordered steak and chips, I do not like curry at all, but he did so I always had that.

I like the poppadoms, with chutney and spicy onions, so I could happily scoff them.

TENDTOprocrastinate · 16/10/2013 20:10

Love this post :) Yabu! I had a fussy eating ex who (along with a long list of other dislikes) couldn't handle the slightest bit of spice- drove me insane with food bordem ! What's the point of curry without spice!?

I look down on the spice wusses :) even my 6yr

LeGavrOrf · 16/10/2013 20:10

Or - as my daughter says in an accusing tone - she dislikes spice because I scarred her with an overly spiced chilli when she was a kid.

I think some people detect spice more.

TENDTOprocrastinate · 16/10/2013 20:11

My 6 year old can handle some spice- more than a korma!

LadyBeagleEyes · 16/10/2013 20:11

That'll be me then SeaSickSal.
All those conclusions just because I prefer mild curries, but to be honest I just don't care much about food at all really, it's just a fuel to me.

slightlysoupstained · 16/10/2013 20:12

SeaSickSal that's a bit unfair, not enjoying very spicy food can be a very individual thing - e.g. my siblings and I ate the same food growing up, but one finds cinnamon and ginger "hot" whereas I'll quite happily eat some pretty spicy stuff. But we're equally likely to be interested in new foods & experiences.

RedToothBrush · 16/10/2013 20:13

There was me thinking that you eat for food for flavour not heat or because its some kind of competitive eating.

If you are a muppet who thinks that a curry is only good if its hot, then you are an unadventurous muppet as much as the 'only eats korma' gang.

Iamsparklyknickers · 16/10/2013 20:14

Eat what you enjoy is my motto.

Curry is something, that in this house, is a restaurant or takeaway meal, therefore you order what you want. Who cares what it says about you to a curry connoisseur - as dull as a wine buff berating your choice and launching into a full lecture on the grapes godparents imparting a certain flavour (I just like saying Rioja and happen to enjoy it 99% of the time - piss off)

Fwiw I will have anything from a Korma, Tikka to Madras and have been known to order chilli pickle and chips just because it's what I fancy.

Salmotrutta · 16/10/2013 20:15

SeaSickSal - I must be very boring, backward and closed-minded then.

Thanks for that Hmm - I don't react well to overly spicy foods but, hey, it suppose that's due to me being all backward and that.

How bloody offensive are you!

WorraLiberty · 16/10/2013 20:15

I'll stick to my chicken tikka massala

If anyone wishes to judge me for that, I'll frisbee my poppadum at their throat.

pigletmania · 16/10/2013 20:16

I like Korma and order it every time, I would rather enjoy my food than hav my insides burned and chucking up all night. Do what ever akes your fancy, but it's rude to criticise other people's food choice!

MarianForrester · 16/10/2013 20:16

YABU: people definitely judge you on your choice of curry. Right or wrong, doesn't matter, it's what people do...

Whether you care about that or not is different matter.

LeGavrOrf · 16/10/2013 20:17

Oh my god.

Lime pickle and chips.

You utter fucking genius.

I am eating that tomorrow. I want it now!

Salmotrutta · 16/10/2013 20:17

I suppose. Not "it". Hmm

WorraLiberty · 16/10/2013 20:17

I think people who don't eat spicy foods are often boring, close minded people, provincial and a bit backward, not open to new experiences, old-fashioned, stuck in their ways, fuddy duddy.

Jeez I know as a nation we've become utterly food obsessed but armchair psychology by curry?

That's too crazy even for MN Grin

MarmaladeBatkins · 16/10/2013 20:17

LeGavrOrf, come to me. I will tek how up that Balti Troiangle for a curray yow cor firget in a hurray!

nkf · 16/10/2013 20:17

Is korma that vile creamy one with a tomato sauce?
Isn't it a bit yobbish? Daring each other to have a vindaloo. Washed down with lager.

nkf · 16/10/2013 20:18

Anyway, the only thing I find weird is eating curry with a knife and fork.

Hulababy · 16/10/2013 20:19

My DD has always liked a bit of heat and spice too. Far more than me!
She loves a curry - Balti is her favourite though, so not overly spicy.
But she eats a lot of spicy meals in general. I cook them, but leave the chilli out of my veggie or fish versions! DD is 11y now but has always eaten spicier food, from being little.
